| 5th February 2009 Wendy Street | Rain ? - From: Rain, Rain Go Away...Fall on England instead I don't think too many people in Britain will have ANY sympathy for you whatsoever re the rain. The news has just covered the SNOW - anything could be happening , wars , gun fights - whilst news item after news item shows kids on sleds, cars in ditches and disgruntled mothers having to look after their kids because there isn't a school open in the country. The funniest interviews are with visitors from Germany or Scandinavia who look as tho they think we are completely bonkers. Anyway, hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday. |
| 2nd February 2009 Wendy Street | Winter in Spain ! - From: Cordoba ' Sit on the patio !' - 'a bit nippy !' - We've just had to shovel our way through the snow to get into the house. Squeaky just put his paw in the stuff then ran indoors shaking his paw frantically - I don't expect he's seen snow before. Anyway , don't let our discomfort spoil your holiday - will you ? |
| 1st February 2009 Wendy Street | Europe for a change ! - From: Seville day 1 I'm glad you like Seville. Tho I don't suppose it comes close to Sikkim. Sorry about all the rain - but the snow storms have just started in the UK. London and the SE expect to be hardest hit. Don't suppose you're going to a bull fight are you ? Not really your thing. Have a sherry and plenty of tapas instead. Have fun. |
| 17th September 2008 wendy street | Could be a real man ! - From: Mae Sariang & Chiang Mai, Thailand Surprised you have never heard of Jack Baines - I haven't either, but thought you might have. Actually, Neville Shute wrote about some English guy who ended up in Burma after the war - he ended up starting up a lucrative business and married a local girl. Shute often wrote about real people he met or knew. |
| 15th September 2008 Ann Marie Sears | - From: to Tha Tom Hi Sarah, I was in Thailand, but missed the Chinese Martyr Museum...I wasn't as adventurous as you (on this particular trip!) and mostly stayed in Bangkok. It's a crazy city. I enjoy your blog and hope to follow you thru your journey! Ann Marie |
| 10th September 2008 wendy street | Levels of enlightenment ! - From: to Tha Tom I suppose being questioned about David Beckam and Manchester United at level three was par for the course. Wonder what the questions would have been at level 9. The God particle ? The Large Hadron Collider ? The Higgs boson ? Stephen Hawking ? |
| 7th September 2008 wendy street | All mod cons ! - From: Chiang Rai to Mae Salong Washing out of a washing machine ? What's wrong with slapping it on a stone by the side of the river ? You know - a little 'picturesque rustic poverty '. You could have been mistaken for a hill tribe woman or are you still wearing your old travelling mate the pink shell suit ? Have fun - take care ! |
| 6th September 2008 wendy street | Off again ! - From: Just arrived... I see I'm the only one so far to comment on your blog. But I guess that's what Mum's are for. Have told your American fan that you are on the move again. She is such a kind lady - I am sure she will have a look. Take care ! |
| 3rd February 2008 Jill | Are you still away or now back? - From: moulay idriss + meknes I still haven't yet figured out how to use this thing properly (just in case you hadn't guessed!) What does a "prod" do? Anyway, are you still away or now back in the land of the living and the hard working again? Sounds like you have had a great time - when's the next one?!?! |
| 31st January 2008 Mum | Fawlty Towers ! - From: moulay idriss + meknes What a hoot ! Trust you to choose a restaurant where the Moroccan equivalent of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES was carried out in full view of the clientele. Perhaps you should have asked yourself why you were the only diner. However, at least you were appreciated by a 'dickhead' so the day couldn't have been all bad. Looking forward to your comments on Fez. Take care ! |
| 29th January 2008 Mum | Photography ! - From: meknes + azrou Sounds as tho you're having a great time. DO pluck up the courage to ask 'nicely' if you can photograph people - better momentoes even than buildings. |
| 28th January 2008 Mum | Bert Flint's House - From: meknes Looked up Bert Flint. What an interesting story. I see he lives there - don't suppose you bumped into him? The Ryad Bahia looks great on the web site - what gorgeous colours ! Are you getting fed up with tagines yet ? Have you tried any of the French food ? |
| 27th January 2008 Mum | Mooching in Marrakech - From: Happy Birthday to Me Well it didn't take you long to find a way to make us all jealous, did it ? Thanks for the texts - much appreciated. What I want to know is where the accompanying photos are - taken by your professional entry camera? How about a pic of a local snake charmer or a cup of mint tea, if you can't manage that. Take care ! Have fun ! |
| 4th September 2007 Ann Marie Sears | "I'll try them!" - From: Naintal to Almora Where are the fudgeballs!!?? Save them for me! |
| 4th September 2007 Ann Marie Sears | Hi Wendy - From: London to Haridwar Wendy... you are way too tough on the vacationing child. Give her a break!! |
| 30th August 2007 Mum | Just my cup of tea! - From: time for tea I thought you had signed up to learn Hindi at work! Shouldn't you be fluent by now? I think you fell down a grain chute ( or were saved just in time - not sure, long time ago) when you went on a junior school trip - so this fear is probably not unfounded. Glad you are packing so much in to your fortnight - sorry it hasn't quite come up to Sikkim standards. So you won't be wanting me to buy you a house in Kausani then? Thanks for all the text messages too ! |
| 27th August 2007 Mum | Srange confectionery ! - From: Naintal to Almora I'm delighted to read that you are on the track of yet more unconventional sweets for me to try. I should like to point out to anyone who is reading this blog that the only reason that these offerings remain gathering dust is because no one else will make an attempt to eat them - including Sarah. It is not because I am ungrateful! Anyway, I'm pleased to hear that you are enjoying yourself and will wait to read your account of being conscripted as a temple musician! |
| 19th August 2007 Mum | Following (but not too closely,of course!)the travels of my daughter! - From: Hanging in Haridwar All sounds very exciting ! I expect you'll come home very blessed after this trip. I know Rupert ran the gauntlet of many Holy Men in Pushkar and look at the change in him! Mussoorie looks lovely from my explorations on the the web - a bit cooler too.Have fun! |
| 18th August 2007 Wendy | Mum's revenge! - From: London to Haridwar Internet freak - huh! Don't intend this comment to sink into a slanging match but would like to point out a few grammatical errors. You may be on holiday and thus excused lower case mistakes but spelling is a different matter . Who is this Rover Ganges upon whose banks your hotel resides? Some huge statue to a god who reveres dogs - I believe there is a monkey god - so a possibility! And 'twop days travelling' - surely a mistake which could only be attributed to your younger sibling! |
| 16th September 2006 Ann Marie Sears | Wendy's friend - From: From Kalimpong Hi Sarah--I remember when I was travelling in Tanzania and I was climbing Kilimanjaro for awhile (7 days?) always looking DOWN at clouds and then after I decended, it seems very strange to be looking UP at clouds and be on flat ground! I read your whole blog and feel like I was right along with you. Take care |
| 16th September 2006 Ann Marie Sears | Hello Sarah - From: Darjeeling - day one HI Sarah, I'm a friend of Wendy's and she told me about your blog. I am reading it all. Enjoy. |
| 10th September 2006 Sixtysomething | Hello 'fat bum!' - From: Kalimpong Souns as tho you might be the only tourist in the area. I dont like the sound of those aggressive dog packs - we have a single aggressive cat and that's bad enough. Not long now and you'll be back to the relative sanity of N London.Hope the return journey goes smoothly. |
| 4th September 2006 Sixtysomething | Sikkim - flora and fauna! - From: Gangtok, Sikkim - again I see you have given up on trekking to monasteries in favour of taxis/share jeeps. Probably a good idea after the previous day's excursions! Wonder if the leopard skin was that of a snow leopard. Have you seen the red panda yet? What about all the birds and orchids which are supposed to inhabit Sikkim? Have you noticed that the birds are of the slightly brighter hued variety than the ubiquitous pigeons of N London ? |
| 4th September 2006 Sixtysomething | Chatting up the locals! - From: Pelling, West Sikkim, Day 2: I am a wimp I am amazed that you are able to stop and chat to people in this (reasonably) remote area. Imagine a Sikkimese !! stopping to ask directions in Avoncliff and being given directions in even limited in Tibetan. Are you finding the terrain a tad more rough than North London ? |
| 3rd September 2006 Sixtysomething | Monks and monasteries ! Gurus and gompas ! - From: Pelling - day one Great to be able to read a detailed account of your trip - the hotel staff sound wonderful - making sure you see the mountain - and obviously very proud of their country. Can't quite see that happening here. Afraid you've trashed any chance of getting a second home for your SIGNIFICANT birthday - camp indeed ! |
| 31st August 2006 Grant (australia) | Another road sign - From: Here we all are, sitting in a rainbow Just reading the blogs to get me through until I return to India in December. Last year my favourite sign was Hurry Burry spoils the Curry. It was situated between Jaldapahra and Kalimpong. Enjoy your trip. |
| 31st August 2006 Sixtysomething | Downhill all the way ! - From: Gangtok Very funny story about the post office. Have you ever thought of going in for writing or comedy ??? When I said it will be 'down hill all the way' I didn't mean literally! Hope you don't have too many experiences like that. |
| 30th August 2006 Sixtysomething | Philosophical poet ! - From: Here we all are, sitting in a rainbow Pleased to hear you've reached the furthest point of your destination. Downhill all the way now! Loved the bit about the retired poet creating road signs - do post any other idiosyncratic ones you see. Hope the rain doesn't create too many problems. Looking for ward to hearing more. Take care M |
| 28th August 2006 Sixtysomething | Monsoon in Kolkata ! - From: Kolkata Glad to see you managed to find your rucksack. Did the identifying tag help? Sounds as tho the monsoon could be a bit of a problem but I expect you'll get lots of advice on what to do to lessen it's impact. We are all well here. Tim is pleased with his directing at Hollyrood - have recorded parts of the prog. Hope the rest of your trip goes smoothly. Keep in touch. Love Mum |
| 5th July 2006 Sixtysomething | You have been googled ! - From: Nine weeks & counting You see I have googled and followed the link ! Love Mum |
| 5th July 2006 Mum | GOOGLE FAN - From: Nine weeks & counting Hi Sarah - Just to let you know I'm Still GOOGLING your name . Love Mum |
