Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan July 22nd 2010

After just 1 night and 16 hours in Hong Kong we managed to squeeze in some tasty Dim Sim, a trip to the night market and another walk down Avenue of Stars! Then it was time to board our penultimate plane and fly into Bangkok! Yay! Its even better then we remembered! As it was my birthday the night we arrived we went for a couple of drinks down Khao San (regretted the next day!!!) the following 3 days were spent visiting Wat Arun (temple of the dawn) Wat Pho (reclining Buddha) and walked up to the Grand Palace but will save looking around till we return to Bangkok before coming home, also managed to squeeze a trip in to my favorite market in the world Chatuchak, spent a good few hours perusing the stalls looking ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Cebu July 12th 2010

After taking a flight from Hong Kong to Manilla we were very pleasantly surprised with the friendly characters of the people we met and the extent of English and Spanish spoken (numbers from 1 -100 are said in Spanish or English) and there are 700 Spanish words in the local language along with 700 English words so we could pick up bits from conversations we were hearing, that along with the worlds 3rd largest shopping center and I thought I was dreaming when I saw a Topshop next to a Lush handmade cosmetics! The prices were the same as home so just did plenty of window shopping there was an Olympic sized ice ring and some of the kids were amazing! In the evening I was treated to a fashion show courtesy of Sunsilk shampoo makers ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali June 19th 2010

We had a quick 3 night stopover in Sydney, in that time we went to Bondi beach and I tried Lobster and chips very very delicious! We spent a morning wandering around Bondi beach and looking at the shops, in the afternoon we took the ferry from Circular Quay over to Manly beach which was beautiful and watched the sunset, had a lovely walk there and it was nice to feel a warm evening breeze! Day 2 we had a look around some parts of the town before heading off to Palm beach - where Home and Away is filmed, unfortunatly we didnt realise it was quite so far away from Sydney town 3hr bus ride each way! And when we got there there was no filming going on so I didnt get to see any ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Queenstown April 17th 2010

New Zealand - a huge version of Devon and Cornwall with a few mountains and glaciers thrown in for good measure...... Started in Auckland where our hire van wasn't waiting for us at the airport as expected, all was resolved in a matter of a few hours though and we were on our way! First we had a little look in Auckland although most confusing, driving, talking English to strangers and suffering a bad case of jet-lag, we decided to head north a bit so went up to this place called Walkworth and stayed at a cute campsite with pink sheep! Met some very very friendly NZ'ers who gave me fish and shared their beer with us till we went to sleep! They were working on a new carpark at “Goat Island” and recommended us to ... read more

South America » Argentina March 22nd 2010

The first town we visited in Argentina was Salta, a beautiful city with great climate and a lovely plaza de armas which sat the cathedral and lots of nice eateries to get your Argentinian steak, the first one we had was very very nice weighing in at 300grams, and about an inch and a half thick! After spending a couple of days we had to take the plunge and do the near on 30 hr bus trip to Iguazu Falls, I think they are the biggest in south America and just a little shorter drop than Niagra but a lot wider at nearly 3kms. They were a beautiful sight, Argentina owns half the falls and the other half are in Brazil. On the first day we took the boat into the falls, similar to Maid of ... read more

South America March 2nd 2010

After Arequipe we took the bus down to Puno along the way seeing some stomach churning sights, dead sheep recently slaughtered on the pavement and tons of sheep and llama skin on the road, but me right off my empanada!! Puno is the town on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca - the largest high altitude lake in the world! We took a 1 day trip of the lake on the Peruvian side as it borders Bolivia and visited Uros Floating islands they are made from reed roots for the “foundations” normally 30cms deep then layers of reeds are placed on the top every few days and then they build houses on top out of reeds! Its incredible people atcually live like this and they eat the reeds aswell!! when the rain falls in the wet ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa February 7th 2010

After the most amazing views my eyes have ever been blessed with from Bogota to Leticia had a job fighting back the tears, was absolutely beautiful and we are so lucky to see an ariel view of the Amazon Basin. Leticia is the largest city in Colombia without roads into it, the only way to arrive is by plane or boat. Leticia has borders with Brazil by land and Peru the other side of the Amazon river. Our first afternoon was spent getting over the incredible heat and humidity, was very intense here being at 93mtrs elevation and 4 degrees off the equator. The next morning we decided to head to the small amazonian village of Puerto Narino 40miles upstream, the boat took 2 hours with 2 150hp Yamaha engines! This idyllic village has no cars ... read more

South America » Colombia January 25th 2010

After a few more days relaxing and taking in Medellins nightlife and eating lots of Arepas (for those who no not of arepas they are a cross between bread and a crumpet and very hard - served with everything in Colombia and usually come with a fried egg or grated smelly cheese) it was time for a move so we took the bull by the horns and vamoosed on a night bus to Cartagena ….the first stop on the Caribbean coast!! My word this was heat!!! 50 + C and hard to do anything!!! There was a nearby mud volcano so we took the obligatory tour to go to that, you get in with another 20 tourists have a massage by a Caribbean man get very muddy then climb up the ladder and wander down to ... read more

Christmas was very quiet for us in Mindo in the day we went Canopying where you are attached by a harnes to a steel rope high above the jungle canopy! It was really good fun Darren did a couple upside down! There were hardly any tourists and hardly any restaurants, we had to have pizza for Christmas dinner there was tons of bugs and lots of Humming birds! On Boxing day we took the bus to Quito and were trying to decide what to do next....Colombia or no Colombia, on a bit of a whim the day after boxing day we took the bus to the border town of Tulcan they were still very much celebrating with a big street parade lots of squirty snow. We spent 1 night before getting up early and crossing the ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Cotopaxi December 22nd 2009

We spent another few days in Banos taking in the countryside and friendly people, there was a independence festival in Quito (capital of Ecuador) starting on December 1st so we took the bus there, Quito was pretty expensive by South American standards, and not the nicest city we've ever been to it was meant to be dangerous after 10 in the evening and was a busy thriving town and rather disappointingly the festivities weren't properly kicking off for a few days! After 2 days (and visiting the important museums and churches) we decided we'd had enough and headed back to Banos whee we started Spanish school 4 hrs of lessons a day (and about the same in homework!) and living with our teacher Elizabeth. We were very lucky in that Banos was also celebrating 50 years ... read more
