Varka-what? Asia » India » Kerala
Varkala. Varkala. Varkala Say it. Var-ka-la. Say it again. Varkala. It is pronounced as it is spelled. Again. Varkala. This time, say it with a Keralan accent, as though you have a million of the tiniest pebbles in your mouth and in order to keep them from spilling as you speak, you must hold them all under your tongue. Varkala. Say this word, and you have said a word worthy of speech. Varkala. Feel it. Varkala. Feel it in your mouth. Varkala. Feel it biting at your lower lip. Varkala. Feel it cut across the back of your tongue. Varkala. Feel [View Full Entry]

OK OK OK! Jeez! It's been over a week since our last entry and we are hearing about it from everyone! So alright already, here it you go. We finished off last time having partied the night away in Goa. Had we already gone back to Arambol for the weekend? Ok, well we did do that, having worn out the things to do in Panjim and bought a train ticket for the following Monday. Back in Aramol we got up to our usual, you know, laying on the beach, reading books, eating......yeah that about it. We also found a lovely little [View Full Entry]

Southern Tip

Yesterday Sarah and I left very early in the morning to catch the bus to Anjuna to attend the Wednesday market. It took us about two hours on a very packed and very nauseating old bus making one connection on Mapusa (pronounced Mapsa). We met up with some friends we had made in Arambol and had a great day searching for treasures. The entire market was abuzz with excitement about a particular party that was happening that evening in a place called Baga, not far from Anjuna. Sarah and I were intruiged, but smelly and weary when we were told the [View Full Entry]

and even more stuff
plus, some really odd people.....

Hi everyone, It's been a while and I've missed you. A persistent tummy bug has kept me from being anywhere near the frame of mind needed for writing, or sitting or walking for that matter. I am back now and ready for some literary action! I'll spare you the details of my past week but if you like, you can imagine an unending expanse of perfect sand flanked by coconut groves and the warm Arabian Sea. Then, one hundred paces away, beind the coconut grove, imagine a beautiful airy guesthouse painted white, trimmed with blue. Take a look at the second [View Full Entry]

eii eii Carnival! Asia » India » Goa » Panaji
Ahoy everyone! Well, here we are back in Panaji (Panjim) for Carnival, to take a break from the exhausting and fast paced beach life, and to stay with the family of some new friends. Martha and Janet befriended us last time we were here, and invited us to stay in their extra room with their family the next time we were in town. So, we arrived on their doorstep yesterday, with Carlie feeling a bit unwell and were welcomed with open arms. Carlie’s been fighting a tummy bug now for about a week or more, and the taxi ride from Arambol [View Full Entry]

Ouch. Owowowowowowowowowow! While yoga on the beach in India has a lovely ring to it, the actual activity has left me sore and wishing I never came up with such a bright idea. Well, to be truthful, I am actually very much enjoying the course, aside from the not being able to walk part. The teacher, one venerable Sharat Arora, who studied under B.K.S. Iyengar himself, is both to the point and uncompromising. As he put it on the first day, "I can look at your body and know what it can achieve. If you are not striving for that 100%, [View Full Entry]

Let's put Uri on the back burner for awhile. His ideas need to simmer in my mind for a few more days before they are going to be ready to be served. In the meantime, I will tell you all about some day-to-day adventures that we have been having. A few days ago, one of our fellow Canadians called Jonathan, took us to a lagoon that is about one hundred paces from the shoreline. Jonathan is a Montreal web designer who spent this past December in New York City selling Christmas trees to very wealthy people on a street corner of [View Full Entry]

I will pick up from where I left off a few days ago. Last you heard from me I was explaining the "clear and purposeful" feeling at one end of my emotional spectrum. At the other end awaits something much darker. It is not like the freeing darkness that I feel when walking on the beach at night before the moon has caught the light of the sun. This darkness makes me "feel" useless. It makes me feel despair. This side is frustrated by the unending questions without any answers and wants to snub its nose at India and return to [View Full Entry]

of books and music Asia » India » Goa » Arambol
So, it has been a while since I posted but to be honest, we haven't done much! We spent the last few days lazing on the beach, reading books and stopping only to cool off in the sea or have a cool drink. Carlie had a bit of a stomach bug for a couple of days, but luckily she is mostly over that and it only kept her one day from the sand. We have been trying out different cafes along the beach, for breakfast and dinner, and we found one that was playing Bob Marley. I felt like we were [View Full Entry]

MIA Asia » India » Goa » Arambol
Hello all, A significant amount of time has passed since my last entry and although Sarah and I have been busily lazing on the beaches of Goa, distraction has not been the reason for my absence. We have been in Arambol about a week. I say "about" because I don't actually know how long it has been, nor do I particularly care to. Time has suddenly become a very novel concept. The sun rises and sets and that's about all one need know. In this week I have been searching my brain for an appropriate way to describe where I am. [View Full Entry]
