Tuesday Adieu O Tuesday the 13th, how little I knew you. Or did we yet meet, while I slumbered alseep. How many hours, where you in my grasp? Or did you simply, slither beyond my reach? O Tuesday the 13th, Adieu adieu. Welcome to Queensland Blip number two, was realizing that I only had 1.5 hours to go through immigration, customs, and then take a train to the domestic airport, check back in, and fly to Townsville. Amazingly I made it on board the aircraft and have arrived safely in Townsville. No pictures of Australia yet, but I'll post LA pictures soon. Scouts honor. ... read more

I’ll Need You to Set That Bag on the Scale Barely into the airport, I encountered the first blip of hopefully few on my year long adventure. The Australians, which have obviously wised up to the ways of profitable air travel, not only limit the size of your carry-on but the weight as well. Apparently my ability to condense a year’s worth of clothes, dive equipment, and a couple of bottles of California wine into two compact bags did not miss their attention. I had to check both bags. This isn’t so much a financial problem, as both bags were still free, but a logistic one. Thinking fast, I grabbed as many pairs of underwear that I could possible extract and stuffed them into my “personal item” (briefcase). If I am going to be without ... read more

Welcome to China The United States is blessed with many cultures. Over this weekend, I had the pleasure of enjoying some Chinese cuisine - and not that fattening, sauce-laden, deep-fried stuff that you get at "chinese restaraunts". I actually got to try places where the menu was in Cantonese or Mandarin. Chinese Dumplings Last night, I had my first sample of Chinese dumplings. Although I've had Japanese dumplings (Gyoza) many times, but I had never tried Chinese dumplings. My friend Jackson's parents ordered several dishes to share among us (boy I love that style of eating) and I sampled several different Chinese dishes. All were different and delicious and just convinces me all the more that I would enjoy living in California. These dishes were the Shanghai variety. A Brunch Dim-sum (hope I spelled that right) ... read more

Likely to return Much like I felt when I first stepped foot onto the campus of UNC Wilmington, there is something overwhelmingly inviting about California. I am currently staying in Pasadena, a short jot north of LA and a couple of hours southeast of Santa Barbara. The weather here is beautiful, and refreshingly cool compared to the east coast (low 70s with no traceable humidity). I've decided to sport pants and boots for today's Journey. Asides from generally enjoying the climate and atmosphere, I have also enjoyed the people quite a lot. Much of the manners and hospitality I enjoy in the South are present here - with people holding doors open for one another and being generally courteous on sidewalks. Drivers try to be courteous to pedestrians but this is a fast paced town and ... read more

Across the Country I started my day at 3:30 this morning (N.C. time, 12:30 am CA time) and enjoyed a greasy breakfast in Asheville N.C. From Asheville I flew to Charolotte, enjoyed an hour and a half layover and a pastry, and then flew to Las Vegas. I am currently regretting my decision to pack my camera in my checked luggage. My final destination today is Los Angelos, California (since all flights to Australia go through LA) and the flight across the country had some beautiful sights. Mainly, the Grand Canyon. It seemed to rise above the rest of the land, since a fog settled just below the chasm. Even at 11 thousand feet, the canyon was awe inspiring. Perhaps I can steal a picture on the way back to the North Carolina next year. Luckily ... read more
