There's been a small glitch in the system. My computer charger has gone belly-up. On Sunday, while Maaike and I were in Kumasi, Katy stayed home and typed up a 6-page entry for her blog. The wind and rain picked up and lightening hit somewhere near the house...as Katy was typing, she saw sparks coming out of the outlet. Long story short, my charger is dead. The computer still works, though, so everything is ok. Meanwhile, I have spoken with HP in the U.S. and they referred me to Western Nigeria. I'm hoping that I can mosey around Kumasi today and find something that will work. So, pardon my blog. It will not be so thought-out today, as I'm typing it on the spot. The five of us are in Kumasi today to get our visas ... read more

Saturday, October 20 The trip to Koforidua was so much fun! I’ve done more in the past three days than I have in the past three weeks! We left early Wednesday morning and headed first to Kumasi. From there we jumped on a mini-bus for another 4 ½ hour ride to Koforidua. We arrived just in time for a torrential downpour. Luckily, some shop owners let us take shelter until the rain stopped. At first we were standing on the sidewalk, under the eaves of a building. It was a “shop” selling used pants. So, literally about 40 pairs of pants were hanging from the eaves and touching our heads. The wind picked up and eventually all the pants started falling from the eaves and onto our heads. We were laughing so hard while the men ... read more

Here's a quick update on the past week for you. I am currently in Koforidua...went to the bead market and Boti Falls (waterfall) today. Both were amazing. Will head back to Ejura tomorrow to greet our new volunteer, David. I will try to get another update on soon about this latest trip. And pictures! Saturday, October 13 Yesterday was my birthday. Birthdays have always been a big deal in my family. For as long as I can remember, the feeling of waking up on my birthday morning was the equivalent of waking up on Christmas morning. Naturally, I was a little worried that I would be sad, seeing as I’m so far from home. But…I wasn’t sad. I did miss the annual joint birthday party I have with my sister-in-law, Ronda (her birthday is today) but ... read more

Sunday, October 7, 2007 The trip to Cape Coast was fun! We ended up coming back a day early, though - it seemed we were all missing the comforts of “home,” and we also ran out of things to do. Overall, it was a very enjoyable trip and nice to appreciate coming back to Ejura. We stayed in Kumasi on Thurday night…at the Presbyterian Guest House. It was a nice and clean establishment….the only stressor was the albino lizard that visited me in the shower. I tried really hard not to scream. Luckily, he was just there to snatch a bug off the wall and then quickly skittered away. Through much trial and error, we figured out that the bus left for Cape Coast at 7 a.m. on Friday. We were told to be at the ... read more

Ah...I love Bill Gates! Microsoft Word is truly worldwide!!! I can now type daily on my laptop in Ejura and upload it here in Kumasi!!! So, it's Thursday night...a little early for my weekly update, but Katy, Maaike, and I are on our way to Cape Coast this weekend. We took an early exit from school and are spending the night in Kumasi before heading out on a bus at 6 am tomorrow. Here's the lowdown from this week: Sunday, September 30 Ok, after spending some time on the phone with a Microsoft person, I have finally activated the Word program on my computer. Yahoo! I think now I can type here and successfully upload to my blog. So…get ready for longer blogs! Don’t feel bad if you can’t read them all…I tend to be a ... read more

Ok - here is the "lost' blog from last week. Some of it has been repeated, but I am just going to include it all. Enjoy. Thursday, September 27 I sit here typing in the dark with my headlamp pointed at my keyboard. I'm not so good at typing on a laptop keyboard yet...I am trying to type some information before our weekend trip to Kumasi...so that I can upload it from a memory stick and not have to sit and type the whole time at the internet cafe. It is Thurday night. 6:00 p.m. The electricity goes out about every fourth or fifth night at 6 p.m. and comes back on in the middle of the night. Ghana has electricity shortages and there are planned outages. It makes everything more time consuming, but in general, ... read more

Ok - I am trying a new thing today. I typed up my blog on my laptop in Ejura and I'm going to try to upload it here. OK...I tried. It failed. I typed out this whole long description of my week and when I uploaded it, there were spaces between all the letters and was impossible to read. Anyway, I will try to type quickly and update you. Sorry it won't be as great as the original, but I am not patient enough to delete all the spaces...I will try to fix it and post the original next week. In Ghana, a week seems like a month. I cannot believe that I have only been here for two and a half weeks. I have adjusted pretty well, I think, to the time, the food, the heat, the excessive sweating, and the general daily life here. But, I am still not used to the pace. Slowly, slowly. Everything happens slowly. Over the past week, many things have happened. Last Friday we did not have school, as "cleaning week" was still in effect. It made for a nice long weekend. On Saturday the four of us decided to hit the road. Katy has a friend in Texas who works with a man from Ghana. His wife is here in Ghana and recently had a baby. Katy had money and clothes to deliver to his wife, Beatrice. Originially, ... read more

It's been a good week...although the "fairy tale effect" has worn off a bit since I first arrived. I think the reality of being in a foreign country is sinking in. Katy arrived on Monday. She is from Texas and just graduated from high school. (I can't imagine doing this when I was 18). So, now there are four of us "obrunis." The other volunteers are great. We've become good friends quickly. Maaike is 24 and is a social worker from Holland. She and I are sharing a room here. (We got the biggest room)! Nathan is 22, I think, and from Kansas City. He will be starting Law School this winter back in the U.S. He's traveled a lot - he was in Thailand before he came to Ghana and will be going to Paris ... read more

I made it! Whew...it was a long journey, but it is great to be here. I almost didn't make it...I misread my itinerary and thought my departure time was 1:50 pm on Tuesday. As we neared the airport at 12:20, I looked and it said 12: 50 departure time! Oops! Needless to say, there was much rushing...my brother sweet-talked the lady at the security gate to let me through faster, and I was the LAST person to get on the plane. They shut the doors, told me to sit down, turn off my cell phone, and fasten my seat belt. Away we went! The flight to Amsterdam was good - long...but there were many movies to keep me entertained. After a layover in Amsterdam, I flew on to Ghana. I arrived in Accra at about 7 ... read more
