Phuket Back over to Asia again for our first holiday of the year, we got our good old cheapie flights again from the Goldy to Kuala Lumpur, hung around the airport for about 5 hours then jumped on another flight bound for Phuket. It was a big day of travels to get there but the hotel we stayed in was fairly new and pretty schmiko and a fair way away (but still walking distance) from the craziness of the beach and the nightlife of Patong. The first day we hit the streets and got our bearings and were instantly bombarded by expats all over the place trying to trick us into timeshares and upon arrival in Patong Beach you are greeted by a huge billboard warning you of this! I made the fatal mistake of talking ... read more

Kuala Lumpur Good to be on hols again if only for two weeks, we set off early from the Gold coast airport bound for KL. Arriving about eight and a half hours later it was straight into the hustle of the busy city. Only having two nights in Kuala Lumpur we straight away hit the streets after checking into our hotel which was only a couple of stops on the LRT to Bukut Bintang (and hidden amongst an Indian Marketplace) which is where most of the action is. After working out the train systems and where you were it was pretty easy to get around, we scoured all the restaurants and bars and after having a beer in an Irish bar (only to get some air con action - the humidity was nuts!I know, not very ... read more

Finally - on holiday again, if only for a short time! Sam and I haven't been overseas in so long so we really looked forward to our trip to NZ (and our only holiday for the year). We set off for Christchurch all excited about finally getting away, and were also going on hols with good friends of ours, Jae and Jen. When we landed in Christchurch late in the afternoon we had to pick up our little Rav 4 hire car and head south for the transient little town of Wanaka. We were told by about 4 different people that the trip could take us anywhere from 4-7 hours! random. All up the trip only took us about 4 and a half hours (not including the half hour stop we took in Lake Tekapo for ... read more

Well, we have sent you all our blogs from all of our travels and I thought we may as well do one to update all the friends and fam now that we are pretty well settled into life back in Oz. After seeing so many beautiful places on earth you kind of forget or never get around to taking pictures of your own home. We wanted to share some with you. It hasn't been the easiest of roads coming home but we have done well to tackle all the obstacles come our way so far and I think we've done the hard yards already anyway - travelling and living in each others pockets for so long with no escape from each other!! Sam was lucky to have found work pretty much straight away at a well ... read more

After four years and eight months of travelling around the globe I was more than ready to touchdown on Aussie soil, and bringing Sam home as my live souvenier was just the icing on the cake! We decided to fly into the west side and catch up with a good pal from London, Craigo. Craigo being the stellar host that he is, put us up for a few days in his pad in Victoria Park just outside the city and showed us around the traps. Perth being the sunniest capital in Oz boasting an average of eight hours of sunshine per day, we got to spend one of these lovely days sunbaking on Cottesloe Beach amongst the hundreds of flies and then later went for a stroll down Scarborough. We were so impressed with the western ... read more

We decided to go to Mauritius to visit a mate of ours from London, but due to a bit of a cock up with telephone numbers and dates, unfortunately he wasn't even on the island when we arrived! Determined to make the best of a bad job, and not knowing much about Mauritius, we scoured the web in search of information about places to stay and things to do here. We finally settled on a little place towards the North of the island called Pereybere, and landed a pretty nice unit complete with all mod-cons, sea-views and a pet kitten?! At some point of the the bus journey from the airport to Pereybere, we wondered if we were even in Mauritius. It was almost like being in India with the huge Hindi population prominent in all ... read more

Maputo Shithole. Went there because we had to. Got out as quickly as possible. Tofo Our main reason for making this long and painful journey here (and it was painful - 4 hours in a cramped transit van from Swaziland to Maputo, then another 9 hours in an even worse van with dodgy but very loud reggae music playing, while sitting next to people that can't have washed for a month) was to catch up with one of my best mates from London, Willsy, and to see the little stretch of paradise he calls home. From the minute we unfolded out of the van, it was blatently obvious as to why his original planned stay of 2 months evolved into 2 years. The beaches are huge with numerous breaks dotted along the way, the water is ... read more

Richards Bay/Hluhluwe & Umfolozi Game Park After a horrifc bus journey (that took 5 hours more than it should have) we arrived at Durban at 1.30am and were greeted with hugs and smiles by our London flatmate Stevo and his better half Debs. Lucky for us, they took us under their wing for a week which we spent at their home in Richards Bay about 150kms North of Durban on the coast, right in the heart of Zululand. With no sleep had and lots of catching up to do, Debs packed a picnic and beers and Stevo, armed with the biggest fishing rod we've ever seen, got us loaded up in his Bakkie (Ute) and we headed straight down to Nine Mile Beach for a spot of fishing. Unfortunately, the fishies weren't playing the game and ... read more

Oudtshoorn Not exactly on the sunny coast, but 97km inland from Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn used to be home to rich feather barons until the turn of the century. Nestled in the dry region of the Little Karoo, it is the home of wildlife ranches, winerys and the Cango Caves. As exciting as the caves would have been to visit, we had already visited some pretty extraordinary caves in the Greek Islands so we headed straight to the Cango Ostrich Farm to learn more about the world's largest bird native only to Africa. The ostrich is a pretty big deal over here, they are farmed like cattle and are extremely important in the African market. 10% of the income derives from the feathers, 30% from the meat and 60% from the skin. Ostrich leather is much stronger ... read more

Cape Town Welcome to Africa people! We flew into Cape Town from Buenos Aires and suddenly realised how much more expensive it is over here. We took a taxi into the centre of the city to our backpackers on Long St and the Cabbie did warn us on the way not to walk the side streets at night and to stay in areas that are well lit. Apparently the crime rate is a little higher over here!!! Staying in Long St. meant that we were right in the middle of everything which was great because we didn't need to go far to get anything but bad because the night-club next to us pumped out music until about 4am every morning. Are we getting old or what?! We managed to get down to the V & A ... read more
