Well, I am ON THE WAY HOME. Am stopping in Memphis to see an old SB friend, Betty Huff, who recently moved here. Then Graceland (gotta see) and Branson, MO. Why, not, I'm in the area and I would never come for any other reason. The return trip is approximately 2700 miles and you can see it on the attached map. Indy was an interesting experience. Weather was the worst I have ever experienced with 95+ heat and 97+ humidity most of the time. Terrible! Being with Family was worth it -- but not worth it enough to move back here. I can't believe I have been gone from SB fro almost three months -- I even miss the FOG. Observations, no one drinks wine -- especially no one drinks GOOD wine. Very relaxed and casual, ... read more

North America » United States » South Dakota July 18th 2010

The Black Hills of South Dakota are completely different from what I expected. They are green, full of flowers and water -- I thought dry and not so green. Mount Rushmore is really inspirational -- and Crazy Horse is so HUGE that all four heads from Mt. Rushmore would fit in just his hair. Crazy House monument is being constructed by one family -- for the past 50 years! No federal funding. Went on to Deadwood and Stergis -- Thank GOD, I'm not going to be here 2nd week of August with 500,000 motorcyclists -- yes, I said FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND -- it is the 70th anuual reunion and there are cycles already coming in to get camping space. The hotel in Rapid City (26 miles away) said EVERY HOTEL in a 50 mile radius and ... read more

Where the antelope play. . . . . Awoke this AM in Scotts Bluff, NE (pop 3,456) to fog! First clouds I'd seen since leaving VC so I asked one of the locals -- why fog -- and they said because they were close to the river -- later saw the "river", it is about 10' wide and don't understand the fog. In any case, unlike Santa Barbara fog, it dissipated in about an hour and I then headed North along state road 71 towards Custer, SD. Beautiful road, 60mph, clear - - - REALLY clear. In 75 miles, I saw zero towns, 12 vehicles (all going south) 8 of which were pick-up trucks, 12 pronghorn antelope, 1000 black angus and about a dozen ranches or farm houses. That's it. All grassland, rolling hills, no trees ... read more

July 15th - July 16th Wow, many impressions of the "GREAT EMPTYNESS" that I had heard Northern NV called -- greener than I thought it would be (rabbit brush very green and sage brush gray green), more mountains that I thought -- not flat at all actually very pretty but no trees as far as you can see. N.Utah the same type of landscape until you get to SLC -- now you have trees for about 20 miles. Wyoming -- let me tell you, more empty than N. NV ever was. I actually think I saw more train cars that real cars-especially in WY. Boy, are there alot of freight trains (and LONG) in WY. No planted crops or signs of real civilization until almost the NB border and we get alfalpha and corn. I-80 is ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Virginia City July 7th 2010

For those of you who have no idea where Virginia Cty is -- it is between Reno (13 miles) and Carson City, NV (12 miles) at an altitude of 6500 ft. It is the largest historical monument in the US. Virginia City exploded into exsistance at the discovery of silver in the mid 1800s. The Comstock Lode was named for Henry Comstock when he discovered that "blue stuff" which was a nuisance to the gold miners was in fact fabulously rich silver. The inhabitnates of VC used to cover the streets with the "blue stuff" to get it out of the mines when looking for gold. From 1859 to 1919 there was over 700 million dollars in gold and silver taken from the mines of the Comstock Lode. By 1865 VC was the second largest city ... read more

North America » United States » California » Sonora June 29th 2010

Well, got up early this AM (thinking to beat the heat) and it was already 75 degrees at 6:30. Started out over Sonora Pass (9300 feet) and it was BEAUTIFUL. Lower elevations on the western side started with the rolling golden hills dotted with live oak (probably valley oaks). At higher elevations, started seeing huge lodge pole pines, redwoods and a few patches of aspen and purple lupine at about 4000 feet still in bloom. Fast and furious water filled creeks and waterfalls rushing down the rocks along the side of the road -- and of course bright blue, BLUE skies. Temperature was a respectable 65 - 75 degrees. And NO cars! Saw only three other cars the entire 60+ miles over the crest. And Kennedy Meadow -- wow, what a wonderful place to camp or ... read more

Well, car is packed -- golf clubs and case of Santa Barbara Co. wine included -- and after dealing with a sulking cat, I am finally ready to go. A few days later than expected, but who wants to drive with vertigo!!! Today is a relatively short drive - about 6 hours - to Sonora, CA at the base of the Sierra. Had planned on going through Yosemite, but learned that the crowds are heavy this year AND I didn't want to arrive without a place to stay and have to drive around looking (nothing available on line). Have to make a stop in Carpinteria on the way out to pick up some chocolate expresso beans -- greatest attention booster I know for long drives. I will then, tomorrow go over Sonora Pass on on to ... read more

North America » United States June 21st 2010

I never realized how BIG the central portion of the US really is. Driving 8 hours a day, it will take me 6 days to drive from Virginia City, NV to Zionsville, IN. Initially, I am planning on stopping in Salt Lake City, Cheyenne, WY, spend some time in the Bad Lands of South Dakota (Mt. Rushmore, Crazyhorse Monument, Deadwood, and the Dinesaur National Park. My Friends Simon and Patti Bretherton may fly in to meet me for this leg. We'll stay in Rapid City, SD.... read more
