Thursday September 15, 2011 It rained late in the night and into the morning. I finally had a break in the weather and broke camp without making breakfast. The next ferry was only 25 km’s away. I did not see much of the coast after leaving my camping spot. It has been quite foggy which has also impaired my vision of the area. There are lots of large trees along the road and the traffic has not been too bad. But there is a fair amount of development along the road. There was also a good climb before my next ferry. While waiting for the ferry I made a late breakfast and called about a hostel that was in Sechelt. The girl said Sechelt was 63 km’s from the ferry. I said I would do my ... read more

Saturday September 10, 2011 Ferries All Night And All Day Long The ferry went well last night. The waters were fairly calm so I did not get nauseous like last time. I watched movies till late and then slept a bit but not long. The ferry got into Prince Rupert at 5 am. The ferry to Port Hardy loaded at about 6:30 am. Things were quite foggy first thing in the morning. But the fog lifted quickly and we had sunny weather for the better part of the whole day. No rain at all today. The view is nice enough; lots of mountains and trees. There were a few Killer Whales spotted but not a lot of action just the odd fin raised out of the water. I have been a little sleepy with almost no ... read more

Thursday September 8, 2011 Rennell Sound I went to bed super late; in fact I wouldn’t even look at my watch because I knew it was that late. That’s what happens when you put me in front of a TV after a few months of no TV. I had thought about staying another day (at the hostel) but the weather looked like it was improving and I got a fair bit accomplished last night (laundry & most of the blogs). I got a bit of a later start this morning but it was only 40 km’s to Rennell Sound; how bad could things get? The gravel road was in much worse shape than I had hoped for. I don’t want to say it was the worst I had ridden on; but maybe it was. The road ... read more

Monday September 5, 2011 Tow Hill I went to bed quite late and naturally slept in quite late. The skies were very overcast and much cooler then yesterday morning. There was a light mist in the air. I had set my tarp up and it was a good thing to do; my tent was nice and dry. I took a walk down the beach to the campground at the end of the road (that lead onto the beach) to look for an outhouse. I had planned to bike and hike to the very tip of the island (Rose Spit). But because of the overcast skies I lost any motivation and became more interested in moving on. Taking down camp seemed to drag out forever having a companion at camp. Too much talking. After I was packed ... read more

Saturday September 3, 2011 Queen Charlotte Islands It rained last night, surprise, surprise. I am sure thankful for the covered shelter. Very overcast this morning. I was told that there is a family from South Africa that moved to Prince Rupert because they have a rare skin condition. This skin condition is somehow agitated by the sun. They moved to Prince Rupert because all of their research indicated that Prince Rupert was the one city in the world that received the least amount of sun in the entire world per year. I don’t know if this is true or not but they do have a store in town called “Slickers” that sells exclusively raingear. I bought a tarp there this morning. Either I will get all sun from now on and it will be a waste ... read more

Wednesday August 31, 2011 Terrace And The Sunniest Day Since The NWT I woke up to warmer morning this morning; it was not a cold as the other day. My tent was also dry; no morning dew. This was a pleasant surprise not mention good fortune as I was camped under trees with no nearby sunlight to dry anything out. As mentioned I have camped on the outskirts of Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park and this is most unfortunate. I would have like to have spent some time checking this area out. It really seems like an interesting area. Because I had come in through the “back way” and late in the evening I was unable to figure out any information on the area. And with the weather the way it is and has been ... read more

Sorry it has taken so long to update the blog. Sometimes the opportunity does not present it's self. Sunday August 28, 2011 Rain! When I left the bar last night it was raining. When I woke up this morning it was raining. I can only assume that it was raining all night. It rained until 3 pm. I had spent the whole day in my tent except for a few pee breaks. I had to move on. I broke camp and crossed the border into Stewart and had my first meal of the day at around 5 pm. I was absolutely starved. The grocery store was still open. I was surprised that a grocery store in such a small town would still be open on a Sunday. By the time I had my food packed into ... read more

Saturday August 27, 2011 Salmon Glacier Road It rained last night; surprise, surprise. Everything was wet and overcast in the morning. I decided to ride up to Salmon Glacier today. As mentioned this is the 5th largest glacier and the largest accessible by vehicle. I got a good early start. The general store was closed for some reason which meant virtually no food for the day. I stopped by the bear viewing platforms. There were no bears and they charge $5 for a 1 day permit. I said I would keep moving on and stop by on my way back. The road is in pretty rough shape and all gravel. The gravel was quite compact so things were not muddy and my bike did not get very dirty at all. The first 10 km’s is flat; ... read more

Friday August 26, 2011 A Day In Hyder I woke up to rain; surprise, surprise. I slept and watch a movie until lunch. I had plans to go up the road today. There is a bear viewing area where you can watch bears catch salmon in a river. Apparently the only bear viewing site in Alaska that is accessible by road. Further up the road is Salmon Glacier the 5th largest glacier in the world. But I wanted the full day and no rain. I am also hoping for things to dry up a bit. Everything is pretty wet and muddy; not something I care to ride my bike through all day. I had fish & chips at some restaurant that runs out of a bus for lunch. I took a bit of a walk around ... read more

Thursday August 25, 2011 Hyder, Alaska Yeah that’s right; Alaska. Bet no one figured I would be in Alaska but I am. I woke up late and then fell back asleep and didn’t wake up until 12 noon; oops. That is what happens when you don’t sleep the night before. I actually got up at 10 am for my morning pee. I heard a noise in the trees. I knew it was a bear. I watched silently waiting for him to appear and maybe come into camp. All I saw was 2 very quick brown flashes and the brown was a lot higher (or taller) than I expected. I can’t say for fact but if I had to bet money I would say a Grizzly Bear walked about 100 ft. from my camp. Nothing touched my ... read more
