Monthly meeting Africa » Tanzania » Centre » Njombe
Ok well, I was sick all last week. Didn't end up taking any of the antibiotics prescribed to me because it turned out the doctror had prescribed me medicine to treat TB. I got better, or so I thought but now I have a head cold and some lingering stomach issues which are just getting annoying now (can anyone say Giardia?!?). I went back to village on sunday after a week of lying in bed and stayed for 4 days and then came back into town for our monthly meeting with SPW. Schools and a lot of the villagers are all [View Full Entry]

Well, a bunch of us SPW vols came into town on Friday for a big Peace Corps crafts fair and party on saturday and we had a lot of fun but then Eliza and I woke up on sunday feeling pretty lousy. We thought we both had the flu but we went to the hospital today to get some tests done just in case and the doctor (who was a total jerk) told me that I have "3 infections" and Eliza has "one severe kidney infection"...no more information than that. For Eliza's "one severe kidney infection" she was precribed cough medicine, [View Full Entry]

Peke yangu! Africa » Tanzania
I arrived back into Lugarawa yesterday afternoon after 5 days out of village (I went to Iringa and changed my flights and searched for my camera..have I already told you this?) and the house was a mess! Spider webs had grown across the room, the floor was covered in the rubble from our crumbling walls and there were bugs EVERYWHERE!!! I moved everything out, swept the floor, walls, windows and doors, sprayed all the corners with toxic bug spray, mopped the floor (involves an old rag and dirty water), then rearranged my room. By this morning the bugs, rubble, crumbs and [View Full Entry]

A mini-holiday Africa » Tanzania
Okkk...so I have 18mins to tell you all about my placement!! We've been in placement for a month now and things are definitely moving slower than I would like, but TIT! To teach an entire weak of school is a feat in itself because there are always interruptions to the school and our timetables. We have reduced our lessons to 3/day and next week are going to rearrange our timetables so that we are spending less time at the school and have more time to organise other activities. The teaching is interesting, the students LOVE to ask questions, especially the secondary [View Full Entry]

CAN YOU HELP?? Africa » Tanzania
Hello everyone, First of all I want to thank everyone again for supporting me and helping me make it over to Tanzania, I wouldn’t be here without your help. I have another favour to ask of you all. Since arriving in Lugarawa (the village I am living in) I have been amazed at their obsession with football (or soccer for us Aussie’s) and their devotion to the game at all levels. Lugarawa Secondary School (where Neema and I teach) has a devoted and competitive soccer team as do the surrounding schools and villages. I have also noticed a huge lack of [View Full Entry]

2 weeks Africa » Tanzania
Just a quick update coz my bus back to village leaves in 20mins! Am in Njombe town at the moment, had to escape from village to go to bank and then Eliza was in town so decided to stay overnight. The last 2 weeks has been such a huge shock and have found it really hard. Things with teaching been moving slowly, lots of interruption, too much work, exhausted. Also gets pretty lonely, didnt realise how much I loved to socialise haha! Felt pretty bad for a while, especially while Neema was in hospital (4 days!) but had a wonderful weekend [View Full Entry]

Hey guys, So we arrived in Lugarawa on the Wednesday the 11th of april after a 5hr extremely bumpy bus ride. Lugarawa really is beautiful, its in a lush, green valley surrounded on all sides by huge, rolling hills. In the mornings its all misty and makes me want to sing “the hills are alive with the sound of music...bongo flava!” Anyway we were slow to get started because our house wasn’t ready yet so for the first two nights we stayed with the head master of Lugarawa Secondary School (where we will be teaching) and this was heaven because his [View Full Entry]

The end is coming Africa » Tanzania » Centre » Iringa
So a lot has gone down in the last week. We taught a lesson with our real partners, found out where we are placed, had some placement issues, made an SPW calender, wrote a song, said goodbye to Clare and soon (on Monday) we will be saying goodbye to eachother. The lesson with my partner Neema went ok, it wasn't great because SPW had some trouble finding students for us and we didnt teach until about 2.30pm and we hadnt eaten so we were all grumpy and the kids were tired and bored (they had to sit through 3 of our [View Full Entry]

So you've already heard about some of the big changes that have occurred in the SPW Tanzania program due to funding issues, well heres another! We were getting all prepared to leave for our village placements this Wednesday, the wazungu were stressed but ready and then yesterday in walks Clare (our program manager) looking kind of scared and nervous and says "So I have some news...some of you will like it and some of you wont." - from this point on our imaginations went wild, thoughts like "omg only some of us are going to placement, they are sending us home, [View Full Entry]
