Anyway so I just finished HSC and I'm off to Tanzania to volunteer with Student Partnership Worldwide (http://www.spw.org.au) for 8 months then backpacking around East Africa for 2.5 months and then heading over to visit my dad in Holland for 1 month!!

I leave on January 3rd from Sydney Airport and arrive in Dar es Salaam on January 4th - having passed through Melbourne, Singapore and Amsterdam airports!

So stay tuned!!

Just a quick update! After our Lake Turkana trip we spent about 4 days with Hannah's old host-father and he took us to see a lot of the work he does with the development organisation he works with and it was so amazing. He works with small, struggling families right through to self-sufficient, environmentall friendly orphanages. After this we headed to Tanzania (with a lot of issues on the way involving passports and borders...) and onto Zanzibar where we are now. We've spent the last week relaxing on the beach, eating delicious sea food, partying at full moon parties, wandering the [View Full Entry]

Sooo just a quick update on the last couple of weeks. After debrief in Iringa we had a big closing ceremony which was really nice (we got t-shirts) and then headed to Dar to spend our last couple of days together before most of the int volunteers flew out and the nationals went to uni. It was a hectic couple of days, emotions were high and we all felt a sense of impending doom with their approaching departure. We had a lot of fun though but going to the airport to say goodbye was one of the hardest things ive ever [View Full Entry]

Well I've finished with my placement. We had our community festival on Sunday and the finals of our sports league. It was a stressful affair because the day before everything looked like it was going to fail miserably but luckily on the day things seemed to mostly work themselves out. We had a guest speaker from VCT who spoke really well about AIDS and the importance of testing and unfortunately we couldnt get the mobile testing like they'd promised because they just told us that day that its not possible (TIT!!). We also had most of the village leaders and important [View Full Entry]

The roads are pretty bad here so it was extremely bumpy and the motorbike didnt have very good suspension, i almost flew off a few times but the pain was intense. When I got off I almost fell over and had to get [View Full Entry]

So this week has been a busy week because I've been here alone, my partner has been lost in a void and has messaged me saying she is coming back tomorrow, only 2 weeks late! Primary school started yesterday and I ended up finishing the lessons quite quickly, its hard for me to answer questions (because of my swahili) so we played games for the rest of the lesson. I've heard the kids out in the playground playing the games, it was fun! Yesterday I had a CAG (community action group) meeting which was really tough because my swahili is pretty [View Full Entry]

I'm in Dar and Hannah is sitting right next to me. I'm so unbelievably happy right now!!! We arrived in Dar on wednesday, 6 hours late (14hrs on a bus) and after a small incidence with a pepsi bottle through our windscreen. We were all ok, just a few scratches but we had to wait around for hours while people got fixed up at the hospital and spoke to the police. We finally arrived at 8.30 and from the time between getting off the bus and into the taxi some talented pickpocket managed to get my phone from inside my bag [View Full Entry]
