This is a bit back logged and things are being posted out of order...but we wanted to share photos of our so far favorite spot in New Zealand. We stayed the night in the Crow hut nestled in the Crow river valley. It was an exciting trip to the hut with some stunning scenery. sean

Kate's Visit

Kate was in New Zealand last week. She flew into Christchurch and we headed for the West Coast. We made a stop at Fox Glacier before continuing to the Copland River valley for a night at the Welcome Flat Hut. That night Kate and I rested in the hot pools around the hut under a clear night sky. The next day we went to Mt Aspiring National park for the night. The following morning Kate proposed goi

Northwest Rakiura Circuit

Max and I decided to go for the 125 km Northwest Circuit track on Stewart in Rakiura National Park in an effort to come across the Brown kiwi. We were told there was a good chance we would see one. Others told us only 10 of those who do this tramp actually get to see a kiwi. On the third day we heard some rustling and a big heafty kiwi took off but only Max really got a good look at it. I was be

The Hut Pass

Max said it best We tramp for accommodation. New Zealanders know how to camp. Rather than topping off a long days hike in a tent they are rewarded with a cozy hut with a potbelly stove. There are hundreds of huts around Department of Conservation land and Max and I have been going to many of these huts for a good nights rest.

Heaphy Track

The Heaphy Track has thus far been our favorite Great Walk in New Zealand. This was our first tramp in alpine scenery and it was also our first experience with the swingbridge and with the wekas. Max lost a sandwhich to one of these birds and I had my toe bitten by another. Since then we have spent a lot of time in the mountains crossed many more swingbridges and had wekas jump into our car a

The Kepler Track was our second track in Fiordland National Park. It was a two day tramp across a wet and windy alpine crossing over Mt Luxmore. It was a trip of memorable nature experiences Our first night was interrupted by the sandflies at the Iris Burn camp and during the second night we were chasing away a cheeky possum who kept trying to get into our packs. At the start of the track we

The Cruizz

Max and I thought we should share photos of our car that we purchased in Nelson NZ. We nicknamed our Ford Fairmount 39The Cruizz39 because it was formally a New Zealand cop car or cruiser. She has been treating us right getting us to places that we probably wouldn39t have been able to get to by hitch hiking. Also it gives us more time to tramp because we have a place to store our gear

After staying int e Mueller hut at Mt Cook National park Max and I headed to Mt Aspiring hut and trekked 10.5 km to the Makaroa hut. The track was very tough and hiking down from Mueller didn39t help us. After the death march to the hut we decided to stay for two nights to relax for a day.
