buddhist caves - From: Grapes of Turpan
confused about buddhist caves in a muslim land? lets just say, the buddha did his thing about 2500 years ago, the christ spread love about 2000 yrs ago, and mohammed did his bit to reform the semitic monotheistic tradition about 1500 yrs ago.

You go with me? - From: Bangkok: Wats, Sticky Rice, Massages.
Glad you enjoyed BKK...one of my homes. In many cultures, especially the Thai culture, beauty is one avenue to money. This power takes many forms...unfortunately, in BKK, it is the power to make a lot of money (by selling sex) for otherwise poorly educated, unskilled poor women (often from the TH countryside). Women who are not 'suai mak' end up in massage shops, factories, or home working on the farm, etc., for very poor wages (100 to 200 baht/day maybe). The fact that many women in BKK are considered to be 'working' if they are with a male farang is just speculation. There are some areas though where, yes, it is a bit out of hand such as lower Sukumvit. But those folks don't bother anybody directly, right? Realistically, it is a very big city and many people just go about their lives, personal or public, without paying that much attention to what the other folks are doing. I am a midlde-aged American farang in BKK and I have a Thai girlfriend. Our lives are fairly normal. What other people think does not matter but it makes me uncomfortable when tourist sometimes stare at us when we go out . The main thing that's been hard to get used is how nice my GF is to me, much nicer than any American woman has ever been. Once again, thank you for a thoughtful blog entry. Where's the pictures...?

Maybe if they don't eat a lot of food they don't "mature". I dunno. I read about some people from North Korea that are ridiculously malnourished, maybe their hormones get messed up, and there are like 20 and 30 year olds who haven't gone thru puberty yet. I guess that's a pretty extreme case tho...some advertiser needs to have a "get manly" campaign.

Bite Help - From: Eaten alive?
Ok use an antihistamine to control the itching (like benadryl) - it shuts down the part of your brain that makes you itch. Take it orally of course. They sound infected - put hydrogen peroxide or use alcohol of some kind - either rubbing alcohol or the kind you drink - yes it will sting bad - do this several times a day. If the infection continues see a doctor - for an antibiotic. Try not to wear perfume or fragrances - even hairspray or such will attract them. I seem to remember there is some spice you can eat that comes out in your skin that repels them too. I think you could do a google search. Good luck!

I love taro! My parents don't differentiate between the "sh" and "s" sounds. I think that's how they speak Mandarin in Taiwan. But since I took some Chinese classes from people from the mainland, I usually say the "sh" and then my mom will try to correct my pronunciation and say the word with just the "s" sound. Too funny. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

When I was in Birmingham last week I decided to go to a random church near our dorm, it was all white people, but they were having a baby dedication that day. The baby was a Chinese adoptee, I thought it was strange it was a boy, because usually adopted kids from China are girls. But when I looked closer, I think his lip was slightly deformed. It's so sad that someone would give up their child just because their lip is shaped a little funny.

Well, the difference is at worst, my mom will ask "how much." And the response might be of "you should save money." I don't know what ayi is thinking... that's why I say she's judging me. :) I more or less trust her.... she cleans for 5 houses in my building. I don't have any cash anyway.

haggling - From: Judged or Humbled?
yeah, i hate haggling too. you actually have to be really thick-skinned to haggle (hence, i suck at it too). you are probably getting ripped off left and right, but that is how it goes. true american "peasants" don't go "hang out" in a foreign country!

Exchange rate - From: Judged or Humbled?
Unfortunately for me, the exchange rate is more like 7.5 or 7.6 for me. I get charged a 2.5% fee on every ATM transaction. But yeah, ayi supposedly is doing 3-4 hours of work - sweeping, mopping, hand wiping the stairs, doing my laundry, etc. I say supposedly b/c I don't feel like monitoring her, and rather just take her word. Funny - all my clothes were hanging on the balcony clothes line when I got back yesterday. Good thing my balacony isn't facing the street!

about sunscreen since I was just asking you about it!! You'd think they would want to remain as pale as possible by using sunscreen. The exchange rate is 8, right? So this woman cleans your apartment and does all of your laundry for $6USD? How much time does she spend there?
