I have just returned from a very enjoyable few days enjoying the sights of Copenhagen with Barry. Despite being the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen is not necessarily at the top of everyone's holiday hit lists. I must admit that it does not have the same charm as other cities, and certainly not as many sights as Rome or Paris. But having said that, it still provided us with a very enjoyable 3 days away from hectic life in London and provided plenty of entertainment. However, one word of warning... prices! Copenhagen is expensive - more than London - which certainly limited what we were able to do. However, there are ways around these things, and we still managed to eat and drink plenty. Read on to find out how..! We left for Denmark very early on ... read more

Back in April we spent a very nice few days enjoying the sights (and foods!) of Granada in lovely Southern Spain. Granada is a very old city, with plenty of history as well as a great Southern Spain nightlife. We went to Granada at a very busy time of year (just after Easter) and were lucky to find hotels as we did. We stayed in 2 different hotels, both very central (something vital in a hotel is its location!). We spent time wandering the lovely central area, with its big squares, cafes and shops. We went into the Cathedral. This is well worth a visit - with very nice architecture, though a little bare with white washed walls. We also went to see the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella, which are also in the centre of ... read more

Having been to Morocco the previous year, we knew we were fans of the North African holiday experience and decided that a trip to Tunisia would be right up our street. We had reckoned on good weather (we were right) and interesting sights (turned out to be even better than expected). And so in March 2006 we went for what was probably the best trip I have ever been on. Day 1 We started off by flying into Tunis, the capital city. I had had tonsillitis before leaving and was still feeling a bit ughy, but going away definitely helped to make that better! Upon arriving in Tunis we had to haggle straight away as the taxi drivers were trying to rip us off. We eventually managed to get in to town for 10 dinar (about ... read more

A cold weekend in Prague!

Prague is probably the perfect destination for a long weekend away. It has the sights, the food, the drink, the culture, the people and the low prices! We went to Prague relatively late in the whole "cheap weekends away to Prague" phenomenon. We were slighly apprehensive that the previous years of cheap drink-fuelled holidayers (particularly UK stag parties) would have ruined the city. This was a silly worry, as Prague remains one of the most attractive and entertaining European cities. My memories of the specifics of the trip are a little dim, and I don't have enough time to write it all up in detail! But I will try to give a brief summary and put up some nice pictures anyway. We went to Prague during November, which allowed us to freeze for most of the ... read more

In March 2005 I took an amazing trip to Morocco with my boyfriend Barry. We had never been to a Muslim country nor to Africa and found that we enjoyed the new experiences and had one of our best ever holidays. We started off by flying into Gibraltar. This is a small area of land that actually belongs to the UK but is on the south coast of Spain. A very quirky place, with cheap alcohol, British shops but definitely a Spanish feel (particularly in the accents and mix of languages). We spent some time exploring Gibraltar, taking in 'the Rock' and some traditional fish and chips, before heading across the border into Spain to take a bus to Tarifa. This lovely coastal town is home to some very good wind surfing, some incredibly cool surf ... read more

In the summer of 2003 I spent 2 weeks doing voluntary work at Sachsenhausen concentration camp. I had been struggling to decide what to do that summer, but I knew I wanted to do something different, and something positive. When I saw this chance to volunteer at a former concentration camp, it felt like the best idea so far. And so at the end of July I got a cheap Ryanair flight over to Berlin and spent the night there in the excellent Circus hostel. I went out for some cheap food and got an early night ready for my big adventure starting the next day. The following morning I got up early, found an S-Bahn station and headed northwards, for Oranienburg. This is a small town just above Berlin. It is nice enough, with some ... read more

In the summer of 2002, I spent 2 months in California. As part of my degree in Britain I decided I wanted to write a dissertation on Mexican farmworkers in California, focussing in particular on the formation of Hometown Associations (where Mexicans from particular towns in Mexico would group their money together to pay for particular projects in those towns, such as rebuilding schools, churches, or laying new sewerage systems). I was lucky enough to get some funding from my University and so at the end of June I set off on a flight to San Francisco. After an uneventful flight I went by bus to the lovely town of Napa, about an hour north of San Fran. There I was met by Hugh and Aletha, 2 of the nicest people in the world! They knew ... read more

I am writing this blog 6 years after my trip to China and so my memories are a bit dodgy. Also the photos are quite blurry as they have been scanned in from old prints (which were already quite fuzzy). More than anything I am just trying to make sure I make my travelblog map of places I have visited as red as possible! Anyway... During 2000-01 my brother spent a year teaching English in China and as we couldn't handle the thought of not seeing him for a whole year, me, my Mum and Dad decided to go over to Beijing for a week long trip just before Christmas. I really enjoyed the visit, seeing so much in such a short space of time. We were on an organised tour - great if you want ... read more

I spent 3 great years studying for my degree in Oxford. It is a lovely city and well worth visiting if you are in England. It is just an hour or so from London but far enough away to feel like you have entered some strange time warp where you may well find people walking around in tweed, wearing "sub fusc" (gown, mortar board, etc) and speaking in very posh accents! Any trip to Oxford would not be complete without a visit to the colleges. The university is made up of over 30 colleges, which range from housing 50 students to a few hundred. I went to Pembroke, which is very pretty but not very open to visitors. It is opposite the famous Christ Church college, where parts of various movies and TV shows have been ... read more
