I had never been to the Lake District before this trip but was very pleasantly surprised by what I saw. The trip was 6 days, but the first and last were basically driving up from London and driving back, so we only really had 4 full days there. After arriving in the early evening at the campsite in Glenridding (near Ullswater) we put up our tent which then decided to go a bit wrong as the porch pole broke. But we managed and went off to the pub for dinner. The next morning (day 1 proper) we set off from [View Full Entry]

At the end of December I went to a very special wedding. This was the day my very lovely friend Claire (who I have known since we were both 4 years old) got married to her man James. I was a bridesmaid and managed not to fall over all day - success! I won't bore anyone with the details. Needless to say, it was great fun, as some of the piccies here show... [View Full Entry]

.... following on from my previous blog on Poland.... Day 4 And so after a one hour journey from Zakopane in Poland we arrived in Tatranska Lomnica in Slovakia. This is another Tatra town - smaller than Zakopane but a good base for hikes, etc. We went straight to our hotel (the Penzion Encian) where we had a very nice en-suite and warm room and emptied our bags (to make the place feel more like home!). Soon after we were out to explore the place. Tatranska Lomnica itself is very small, with some nice restaurants and bars but not really anything [View Full Entry]

At the end of August/start of September, we took a 10 day trip to Poland and Slovakia. The first 3 and a bit days were spent in Southern Poland (covered by this blog) and the rest were in Northern and Eastern Slovakia before a dash over to the West and Bratislava (next blog). I had never been to Poland before but still had an idea of what to expect - beer, dumplings, lots of history, friendly people. And that is pretty much what I found! Of course we only had a short time there and I hope to come back one [View Full Entry]

For my birthday, Barry took me on a secret trip. I didn't have a clue where we were going until we were at the airport check-in counter - very exciting! Despite temperatures exceeding 40 degrees celsius, we had a great long weekend in Madrid and Toledo. The high temperatures obviously meant that we had to take it easy sometimes - taking siestas for an hour or two in the middle of the day. I must admit though that I have always been a fan of the siesta and found this a very enjoyable part of the trip! There are plenty of [View Full Entry]

Had an excellent day out at Wimbledon today. Wimbledon is both a pleasant village/suburb in outer London, but also the site of a tennis grand slam tournament held for 2 weeks every year at the end of June/start of July. It is possible to get tickets for the tennis through a public ballot held every year, but if you miss out on this you can also queue for tickets on the day. Wimbledon is one of the few British sporting events where you can still get tickets on the day, even if you are not affiliated to a particular club. However, [View Full Entry]

I have just returned from a very enjoyable few days enjoying the sights of Copenhagen with Barry. Despite being the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen is not necessarily at the top of everyone's holiday hit lists. I must admit that it does not have the same charm as other cities, and certainly not as many sights as Rome or Paris. But having said that, it still provided us with a very enjoyable 3 days away from hectic life in London and provided plenty of entertainment. However, one word of warning... prices! Copenhagen is expensive - more than London - which certainly limited [View Full Entry]

Back in April we spent a very nice few days enjoying the sights (and foods!) of Granada in lovely Southern Spain. Granada is a very old city, with plenty of history as well as a great Southern Spain nightlife. We went to Granada at a very busy time of year (just after Easter) and were lucky to find hotels as we did. We stayed in 2 different hotels, both very central (something vital in a hotel is its location!). We spent time wandering the lovely central area, with its big squares, cafes and shops. We went into the Cathedral. This is [View Full Entry]

Having been to Morocco the previous year, we knew we were fans of the North African holiday experience and decided that a trip to Tunisia would be right up our street. We had reckoned on good weather (we were right) and interesting sights (turned out to be even better than expected). And so in March 2006 we went for what was probably the best trip I have ever been on. Day 1 We started off by flying into Tunis, the capital city. I had had tonsillitis before leaving and was still feeling a bit ughy, but going away definitely helped to [View Full Entry]
