Ururguay is just a great country. Apparently it is known as the Switzerland of South America. Having never been to Switzerland, I find it difficult to draw comparison, but based on this trip I now think that Switzerland must be a very nice place. Colonia and Carmelo We started our trip to Uruguay by catching the ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento. This town is located north of BA and known as a popular day-trip destination. We decided to take our time exploring and so stayed for a total of 3 nights, all of them at the lovely Casa Teresa. It is a little bit outside the centre (maybe a 20 minute walk), but well worth the effort. Teresa lives in the main house with her family and has built a small complex in ... read more

¡Adiós Buenos Aires!

After nearly 2 weeks in our first city, we have decided to move on. We will be leaving Buenos Aires behind and going north to Uruguay. Buenos Aires has been quite an experience. It is a large city that takes a good few days to get your head around. Strangely, there does not tend to be massive crowding of people on the streets (unlike e.g. London´s Oxford Street on a saturday afternoon). The sights are mostly well spread out and so you find yourself doing a lot of walking each day. This of course suits us both well though, so no complaints here! The other significant difference to note is that this is very much a "new world" city. The streets almost all follow a grid pattern and it can be difficult to work out the ... read more

Well, what can I say. I have been dreaming of it since I was 4 years old, talking about it with Barry since we started going out together over 5 years ago and planning it seriously for the last year or so. That´s right, it is my year in South and Central America and it started on 5th September! We left Heathrow and after 2 flights, with a short stop at Sao Paulo, we made it to Buenos Aires. We had been on the same plane for over 15 hours and all in all, this was probably not the best state to face a city that puts London in the shade (in terms of size at least). Still, we changed some money at the airport and caught a bus into the centre. We started walking through ... read more

I had never been to the Lake District before this trip but was very pleasantly surprised by what I saw. The trip was 6 days, but the first and last were basically driving up from London and driving back, so we only really had 4 full days there. After arriving in the early evening at the campsite in Glenridding (near Ullswater) we put up our tent which then decided to go a bit wrong as the porch pole broke. But we managed and went off to the pub for dinner. The next morning (day 1 proper) we set off from the campsite uphill and followed an amazing hike up into the hills, along striding edge and up onto Helvellyn (3rd highest mountain in England - 951m). The views from the top were spectacular, although it ... read more

At the end of December I went to a very special wedding. This was the day my very lovely friend Claire (who I have known since we were both 4 years old) got married to her man James. I was a bridesmaid and managed not to fall over all day - success! I won't bore anyone with the details. Needless to say, it was great fun, as some of the piccies here show...... read more

.... following on from my previous blog on Poland.... Day 4 And so after a one hour journey from Zakopane in Poland we arrived in Tatranska Lomnica in Slovakia. This is another Tatra town - smaller than Zakopane but a good base for hikes, etc. We went straight to our hotel (the Penzion Encian) where we had a very nice en-suite and warm room and emptied our bags (to make the place feel more like home!). Soon after we were out to explore the place. Tatranska Lomnica itself is very small, with some nice restaurants and bars but not really anything else of substance. We decided to take the local cable-car up to Skalnate Pleso (1751 m). After a bit of confusion as to where the cable car goes from (hint - the Lonely Planet guide ... read more

August 29th 2006

At the end of August/start of September, we took a 10 day trip to Poland and Slovakia. The first 3 and a bit days were spent in Southern Poland (covered by this blog) and the rest were in Northern and Eastern Slovakia before a dash over to the West and Bratislava (next blog). I had never been to Poland before but still had an idea of what to expect - beer, dumplings, lots of history, friendly people. And that is pretty much what I found! Of course we only had a short time there and I hope to come back one day to discover other parts... Day 1 So, our visit started off with a very early flight into Krakow. We arrived mid-morning and decided to get to our hostel (the 'Goodbye Lenin') straight away so ... read more

For my birthday, Barry took me on a secret trip. I didn't have a clue where we were going until we were at the airport check-in counter - very exciting! Despite temperatures exceeding 40 degrees celsius, we had a great long weekend in Madrid and Toledo. The high temperatures obviously meant that we had to take it easy sometimes - taking siestas for an hour or two in the middle of the day. I must admit though that I have always been a fan of the siesta and found this a very enjoyable part of the trip! There are plenty of things to see and do in Madrid. I will start with the more cultural aspects of any visit. We enjoyed a number of the museums on offer, including two of the 'big ones'. We went ... read more

Had an excellent day out at Wimbledon today. Wimbledon is both a pleasant village/suburb in outer London, but also the site of a tennis grand slam tournament held for 2 weeks every year at the end of June/start of July. It is possible to get tickets for the tennis through a public ballot held every year, but if you miss out on this you can also queue for tickets on the day. Wimbledon is one of the few British sporting events where you can still get tickets on the day, even if you are not affiliated to a particular club. However, to get these tickets you have to be willing to get up extremely early in the morning (or even camp out the night before). We opted for the former, and so at 4:15 on a ... read more
