After we left Salt Lake, we saw horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and llamas in green, grassy meadows in a beautiful valley after Park City. Then there were fabulous cliffs of orange sandstone. Then we started to see antelope. We got into Wyoming at Evanston. It's at 6700 feet and on the high plains. Every offramp had a big sign and a gate that said "Road closed if flashing. Return to ______________". Winter blizzards must be something else. There are banks and banks of snowfences all along the highway and lots of wind generators. I think that's a major clue. Some of the [View Full Entry]

Nancy monitored Rich for signs of concussion all night. All was well, so he convinced her that he was fine to drive. He was limping, but it didn't hurt to drive. As we left the national park, we enjoyed the splashes of yellow on the mountain. Great Basin National Park is a mountain oasis in the middle of the desert. Aspen and willow were turning yellow by the clear streams. Bushes and other ground cover were turning orange and red. In the West, we savor these pockets of color in the middle of sagebrush chapparal and the evergreen forests. We [View Full Entry]

After saying our goodbyes to Rich's mom and dad, we headed out to Tonopah. It's a small mining town, and like all Nevada towns, it has gambling. here is what the billboard for the Ramada Inn says, "Roll Dice for Free Room". We got groceries and drove by the high school sign, "Home of the Muckers". Out of town we saw bands of wild horses and groups of free-ranging cattle. We passed the turn-off to the Extraterrestrial Highway and Area 51. The bare bones of the earth are exposed here. On the flanks of volcanoes that erupted 10,000 years ago, [View Full Entry]

We settled in by Walker Lake at about 10:30. We walked along the beach and admired the millions of stars we could see on the moonless night. You could understand why someone named the Milky Way, as in the Appion Way meaning road, because the stars were so thick it looked like you could actually walk up and over the sky. We went to sleep with sound of coyotes singing. In the morning, we woke to a silhouette of the mountaians against the eastern sky and the dark blue lake in front. We heard a flock of geese overhead and [View Full Entry]

Hello, everyone! This is a test. I hope all of you got this message. We plan to leave in a few days. We have had some delays. Rich's Dad came to stay with us for a week and a half to have and recuperate from cataract surgery. We had a great time while he was here! Our septic tank backed up and had to be pumped. Our dear friends Mary and Tim and Madeline are moving back to Alaska while we're on our trip so we MUST say farewell. We'll add details soon. Nancy and Rich [View Full Entry]
