You’ve done well to get to here, and I promise I’ll keep it brief. We arrived in Croatia via train from Slovenia, and worked our way down the coast with the following highlights to report - Plitvice Lakes National Park, Dubrovnik, Split and Trogir. We had a relaxing stay in Dubrovnik, in a beautiful apartment with views of the ocean and the old town. But I’ll let the pictures do the talking!!! Next instalment… our very own house in Brinsmead, Cairns: and it still has room for guests. ... read more

We’ve gabbled to many about assault on Mt Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia. Here are pictures to prove it. What a trip. The summit is 2864m, and we’ll be honest - we only made it to 2500m to the Triglavski Dom (Dom means hut). It was a hard slog, and being Oz, we were not accustomed to the icy conditions, and thought better of being the first Aussies to perish at the summit. The views were sensational, and the Triglavski Dom wins the ‘best coffee’ category (there is some element of ‘relief’ here), and as I’ve mentioned, comes runner-up in the best sausage (Kransky sub-group). How do they do it? The walk down Mt Triglav (we came down a different way through the seven-lake valley) was equally spectacular although very long. 7am start and 7pm ... read more

We interrupted our tour of the mother country with a brief but very enjoyable interlude in Sweden, where we were graciously hosted by Chantal and Oskar in Lund. As Chantal-followers will have predicted we had an outdoorsy sort of weekend, but all-in-all a safe one (please note helmets). Chantal showed us some of the delights of southern Sweden and we were certainly impressed. Chantal and Oskar’s friends Charlotte and Jonas also treated us to a Crayfish party, which is the traditional vehicle for drinking games in Sweden in August (although come to think of it - it was September - maybe they do it every month?). The highlight of the trip was, of course, seeing Princess Mary’s unborn child (or at least a black car which we think may have been carrying some member of royalty, ... read more

Dear all, thanks for coming to the site which contains the promised 'illustrated holiday report'! A picture speaks a thousand words, so I'll keep it brief and let you admire what is mostly Ian's photography. Our trip began in Rowan's Grandad's home village of Linton, near Cambridge. If it is in your atlas please let Rowan’s Grandad know. What a great place to start, strolling between Grandad’s house down streets lined with crooked old half-timbered houses to our humble abode (joke) at Mrs Rossiter’s B & B (see pic) with its luscious green manicured lawn, babbling English brook, and bumper English breakfast. We thought we might be on a movie set. During our short stay, we managed to catch up on 10 years of news since Rowan last saw Norman and Leslie, visit the nearby village ... read more
