Here we go..

Rosie and Luke

We're doing a six month tour of South America, beginning in Ecuador and traveling full circle through Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Brazil, to end up in Venezuela (or Columbia, or both!). Hoping to pick up some Spanish, Portuguese, football and good times along the way!

Once we found our way out of the cloudy cloud forest, we headed straight for the beach! It was time to work on our barely-there tans. Nearly six months in South America, and relatively no bronzing to speak of, how shameful. Nadina would not be impressed. As has been common for us, we ended up choosing a location very popular with locals and not foreigners, and did so during the super-duper high season of Semana Santa - holy week, otherwise known as Easter. So, of course, hotels were booked and prices were high, but still nothing to get too concerned about, as Atacames is most popular with lower class Ecuadorians who don't have a ton of money to spare. We landed a decent room close to the beach but out of the noise for $12 ... read more

Ola, as we are again in the land of the spanish-speakers! That's right, we are back in the Andes, having done a huge circle around S.A. We just finished three weeks of volunteering in the cloud forest in Northern Ecuador near a place called Nanegal. Our project was at an birding ecolodge in the mountains called Santa Lucia. Very beautiful place The cloud forest, aptly named, is in constant cloud cover, and March happens to be the rainiest month of the year there. Ha. Lucky us. Yeah it rained alot, but it didn't dampen our spirits, as the folks that work there are some of the most amazing people I have ever met. They got crazier and crazier as the days went by - and the weekends down in Nanegal were a drunken blur of ... read more

Back to Peru Rosanne Steinke, Luke Harrison The Peruvian mountian town of Huraz brought us back up to the elevations of 3000 to 4000m where the air is crispt and cool. The town itself was alittle reminder of what its like back in BC. The town lies between two mountian ranges with a river in the middle. Alittle like Smithers( But a tad bit higher up). It was an adjustment to get back into the cold because we coming from Brazil hot hot. This is a big spot for mountian climbers and hardcore trekers because some of the peaks in the area stand over 6000m. But we weren´t really prepared to go for the big challenges quite yet. (Someday we´ll be back though). The First day out and about we hit the rocks. Talk about ... read more

Hey all, while chilling in Lima, visiting Vivanda's at least twice a day, and waiting for Cole and Amy to show up, we decided to make an overnight trip to Pisco, dubbed the poor man's Galapagos Islands for its abundant wildlife, easy access, and tolerable price tag. We had been staying at the Flying Dog where there happened to be a lot of people just kind of chilling and not really doing much but eating and drinking, so one night we found ourselves hanging out with a bunch of older guys (by older I mean like 40ish) pounding back Brahmas and taking turns guessing which Peruvian girls were prostitutes, as alot of them apparently hang out in Miraflores, looking for the rich foreigners. I, personally, didn't think any of them were prostitutes, but according to ... read more

Untitled Rosanne Steinke, Luke Harrison We celeabrated Carnaval Brazilian style in the little beach town of Arraial D'Ajuda. Lutan a brazillian honky that we met in Saquerema hooked us up with a cheap place to stay where him and his family were camping at. Lutan is a 40yr old man and is an independant musician. He plays the tamborine. Yeah don´t laugh, he can rock that tamborine harder then I thought was possible. Anyways me and this guy ending up being drinking buddies back in Saquerema and he just took off without saying bye. A week or two later he sent us an email saying to come up to Arraial to party for Carnaval and he that he also has a place for us to stay. We hoped on the bus for 12 hours that ... read more

Bom Dia! Tudo Bem? (Good morning, everything well?) Kind of the classic greeting in Brazil, or at least in Rio State where we are. We had to get out of the monotony of Saquarema for at least a few days, so we planned an overnight trip to Rio, which is only two hours away, but truly the world away as far as our connection to it. If you love the beach, which I do, Saquarema is perfect, but our apartment is cooking day and night and our skins have been peeling since our last bad sunburn, so it was time to do something else other than play cards, eat, drink, or lay in the sun. So off to Rio it was, with only a vague idea of where we wanted to go in the massive city, ... read more

Oi everybody Como vai?? We're safe and sound in Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro in a little backwater town called Saquarema. We rented an apartment here for the next little while, with some much appreciated help from our buddy Juca in Sao Paulo. Saquarema is a little surfing haven, and as we are the only foreigners here, literally, we have made some lovely friends simply from running into them on the street; us being a novelty I think. The sun and surf are amazing and frustrating at the same time. Our apartment has no AC, therefore baking us 24/7 in the stifling humid heat. And to make matters worse, a lovely gigantic bug from another planet has made itself at home in our 2nd bedroom. Neither of us has the heart or the ... read more

Rosanne says that these are much more spectacular then Niagra. All I can say is that they were damn awesome. There are 240 falls or something in total at the Iguazu national park which boarders Brzail and Argentina. We were tipped off by a friend to not go with a tour group and get to the park as early as possible which was the best advice we could get becasue we showed up at 7 in the morning and just about had the first couple of hours in the park to ourselfs before the tour buses started rolling in with the crowds of people. With nobody around it made the photos much nicer because by the noon the park was packed like disneyland. Anyways we were strolling around the park checking out different water falls and ... read more

Alright, here goes nothing.... So, we're beginning month 3 or our 6 month trip, with two successful months under our belts. We're currently killing some time in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, so that I can finish my french job application that is due in two weeks, and so that I can pick up my new bank card.. the last one was eaten by an ATM in Lima (it was trying to do me a favour I think?) We're staying at an HI hostel with like 60 other backpackers, so its kind of crazy... last night was karaoke night, and some dude hogged the mike all night, and his version of singing was shouting at the top of his lungs for 4 hours straight. thank goodness I invested in a good set of ear plugs. ... read more

So we met some cool guys from Brazil while staying at the Sohostel in Palermo, and we ran into two Canadian chicks that we had done the Inca Trail with in Cuzco, and they invited us over for a little dinner party before the real festivities got going in the big city for New Years Eve. Turns out that the party doesn't start in Buenos Aires until 2 or 3am, even on New Years! So the girls made us an awesome dinner in their apartment, and we managed to scrape together a pretty sweet white wine sangria with their 8 leftover bottles! Gabriel, our food-loving friend, was on his best behaviour, only eating as much as the next person, but he did show us a bit of his true colours, by busting out his secret blue ... read more
