I was now back on mainland Ecuador after a great trip to the Galapagos and after nearly 3 months it was time to leave the country and make my way to Peru. With my plane landing in Guayaguil I decided to spend a day with some friends (Amber-Jay, Johanna and Emma) before getting the bus into Peru. I spent most of the day with Emma trying to send some things I had bought home which proved to be an expensive mission and also getting some amazing ice cream recommended by Emma mmm, in the evening I met up with the others and a group of their friends and had good fun with some of the girls getting seriously into the karaoke. I got to the bus station early the next day and managed to get a ... read more

Arrival Day Day 1 So after a few days settling into the Galapagos way of life it was time to get on a boat and see some of the other islands. It was an early start which I was soon to find out would be a common theme and I waited outside the tour agency for 2 others I was meeting before going to Baltra Island to meet the boat. Soon after I arrived the others turned up...they were a couple, Mike and Elise from Canada. We had a good chat while in the taxi before meeting our guide Veronica at the airport then getting our bus transfer to the port where our boat the Aida Maria was waiting. My first impressions of the boat were good everything seemed very posh and expensive and completely out ... read more

A 10 hour bus took me back to the action packed Quito. Paola and her family insisted that I stayed with them when I returned so I kindly accepted their offer and they picked me up from a nearby bus station. I then spent the Monday picking up my passport from the Embassy and also seeing if my cards had arrived (which they hadn´t). I had re-arranged my flight to the Galapagos for the Wednesday so I was really hoping the cards would arrive on the Tuesday....I spent the day waiting in and around the Spanish School I was at hoping a FedEx van would pull up. Eventually at 4pm the package turned up and I couldn´t take the smile off my face...I went to the cash point and checked they worked which they did ... read more

A smooth ride from Montañita took myself and Al to the biggest city in Ecuador - Guayaguil! Originally it was just going to be a city to pass through but as Amber-Jay lives there and we had also made some other friends from Guayauguil at the weekend we decided to spend a few nights hanging out. After we arrived and sorted out a hostel Johanna one of Amber-Jay´s friends we had met a few days earlier arranged to meet us and we took a walk along the Malecon 2000 which is a name given to a boardwalk that is next to the Guayas River and is around 1.5 miles long. Its a very modern boardwalk as the name suggests and was a very safe place with a lot of security around...one thing that was noticeable was ... read more

Ok so after returning to Quito hoping for a package to arrive from home I found myself facing a slightly different issue than I was thinking. I spent the weekend meeting up with the friends I had previously met in Quito and also booked my flight to the Galapagos for the Wednesday. When it got to Tuesday night I got all my stuff together in the hostel ready for the night bus to Guayaguil then the flight afterwards. What then happened next would make a massive dent in my travels....I had my large and small bag ready, packed and locked so I could take a taxi to the bus station, I then quickly went to the toilet leaving my bags by the toilet door in the lounge area of the hostel, after coming out the toilet ... read more

I eventually left Quito and got myself on a bus to Banos. It is situated 3 and a half hours south of Quito and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ecuador. One of the interesting facts about Banos is that is has an active volcano right on its door step called ‘Tungurahua’ which means ‘Throat of fire’, the last major eruption was in October 1999 but has had activity ever since so makes it a pretty interesting place to be. Seeing as Banos is a popular tourist place as you would expect there are a lot of tour agencies around as well as numerous souvenir shops but there are still a lot of locals around too! There are also tons of hotel’s and hostel’s so was tough to know where to go, in ... read more

So its 2 weeks of Spanish classes done and 2 to go, still enjoying it but thats not to say there are more than a few stumbling blocks. On the Tuesday the girls suggested going to Mindo which is apparently around 1 and a half hours away from Quito. I arranged to not have lessons on the Tuesday and girls did the same or so I thought. After getting up really early on the Tuesday I caught the bus and met Mayra, we then got a further bus to meet Paola and Janinna before getting a taxi to the station where the bus for Mindo leaves. We got on the bus and it only cost around $2 which was great and got our seats at the back...it was then that I found out that Mayra and ... read more

It’s now Monday and my first day at Spanish School. I signed up to a School called ‘Galapagos Spanish School’ it’s a well organised and friendly place with a little adorable dog called Bobby...who is now my best mate! I moved hostel the previous day to a place called Casa Bamu which has great views of the city from the terrace and also has nice comfy beds...but the walk up the hill to get to the place is a bit of a struggle ha. I met my teacher Rosita who is a very nice local lady and we got started on the classes, they are 4hrs a day and the majority of that is talking which is good as that is the hardest part for me when it comes to Spanish. My classes seemed to time ... read more

The Ecuador adventure starts! After getting our stamps into the country we caught a 6hr bus to the capital Quito. When we arrived in the station it was a bit creepy, none of the lights were on and there weren’t many people around...we did wonder whether it actually was the station. We found out that the area we wanted to go was still quite a way away and we would need to get another bus or a taxi. I must admit I didn’t mind getting a taxi as we all had our bags with us but Lorina and Maria seemed more keen on the cheaper bus route. We saw a guy jumping into a taxi and asked where he was heading to, he was a Norwegian guy that was heading to the same area as us ... read more

I had a nice surprise on my bus to Cali as the company I went with had wifi on the bus and also a TV at the back of each seat, there were a lot of movies to choose from as well as music....the only problem was that everything was in Spanish and with no subtitles so was a bit of a struggle to watch a film. I made it to Cali around 8am and got a taxi to my hostel. I thought this would be straight forward but it definitely wasn’t, I gave the driver a copy of the address and he seemed to know where it was. After around 20mins driving we were in a really dodgy looking area and I started wondering what type of place I would be staying in. He couldn’t ... read more
