I eventually left Quito and got myself on a bus to Banos. It is situated 3 and a half hours south of Quito and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ecuador. One of the interesting facts about Banos is that is has an active volcano right on its door step called ‘Tungurahua’ which means ‘Throat of fire’, the last major eruption was in October 1999 but has had activity ever since so makes it a pretty interesting place to be. Seeing as Banos is a popular tourist place as you would expect there are a lot of tour agencies around as well as numerous souvenir shops but there are still a lot of locals around too! There are also tons of hotel’s and hostel’s so was tough to know where to go, in ... read more

So its 2 weeks of Spanish classes done and 2 to go, still enjoying it but thats not to say there are more than a few stumbling blocks. On the Tuesday the girls suggested going to Mindo which is apparently around 1 and a half hours away from Quito. I arranged to not have lessons on the Tuesday and girls did the same or so I thought. After getting up really early on the Tuesday I caught the bus and met Mayra, we then got a further bus to meet Paola and Janinna before getting a taxi to the station where the bus for Mindo leaves. We got on the bus and it only cost around $2 which was great and got our seats at the back...it was then that I found out that Mayra and ... read more

It’s now Monday and my first day at Spanish School. I signed up to a School called ‘Galapagos Spanish School’ it’s a well organised and friendly place with a little adorable dog called Bobby...who is now my best mate! I moved hostel the previous day to a place called Casa Bamu which has great views of the city from the terrace and also has nice comfy beds...but the walk up the hill to get to the place is a bit of a struggle ha. I met my teacher Rosita who is a very nice local lady and we got started on the classes, they are 4hrs a day and the majority of that is talking which is good as that is the hardest part for me when it comes to Spanish. My classes seemed to time ... read more

The Ecuador adventure starts! After getting our stamps into the country we caught a 6hr bus to the capital Quito. When we arrived in the station it was a bit creepy, none of the lights were on and there weren’t many people around...we did wonder whether it actually was the station. We found out that the area we wanted to go was still quite a way away and we would need to get another bus or a taxi. I must admit I didn’t mind getting a taxi as we all had our bags with us but Lorina and Maria seemed more keen on the cheaper bus route. We saw a guy jumping into a taxi and asked where he was heading to, he was a Norwegian guy that was heading to the same area as us ... read more

I had a nice surprise on my bus to Cali as the company I went with had wifi on the bus and also a TV at the back of each seat, there were a lot of movies to choose from as well as music....the only problem was that everything was in Spanish and with no subtitles so was a bit of a struggle to watch a film. I made it to Cali around 8am and got a taxi to my hostel. I thought this would be straight forward but it definitely wasn’t, I gave the driver a copy of the address and he seemed to know where it was. After around 20mins driving we were in a really dodgy looking area and I started wondering what type of place I would be staying in. He couldn’t ... read more

Bogota was a bit of a shock to the system on arrival...it took us over an hour, nearly two once we were in the city to get to the area where our hostel was. The city is huge and the amount of traffic was incredible, after catching a bus around midday from Armenia we got to Bogota in the evening and in the darkness which always makes cities seem more intimidating. We got ourselves taxis to the hostel and when we arrived the taxi driver told us to be careful as it was dangerous around there...not what you want to hear when you arrive in a capital in the dark after a 9hr mini bus journey! The area we were in was La Candelaria which is the Historic Centre and also a popular tourist place. In ... read more

Salento was next up after Medellin and with it being Easter a lot of Colombians were making their way to the same place as us which made for some traffic troubles. The weather had also took a turn for the worse and there was a massive storm going on with torrential rain, we arrived in Salento 9hrs after leaving Medellin due to a change in Armenia and also the traffic coming into Salento. After grabbing our bags myself and Jack asked the driver where the taxis are and his response was there are none and laughed so we had to navigate ourselves around although it’s not a big town. We did find the hostel but the owner said they were full and they had moved us to another called Plantation House so we made our way ... read more

The bus ride from Santa Marta to Medellin was an experience in itself. With it being my first night bus in Colombia I was open minded as to what procedures they might have...the first thing that was new to me was once we were on the bus a security guy comes on with a video camera and goes round each person getting a mug shot (good idea I guess), must be to pick out any known criminals but a weird experience none the less. Also throughout the night the police would come in and have a look around the bus, one of the times we all had to get off and they searched us as well as looking in our bags. 17hrs later we did arrive and when getting off the bus the heat hit us...it ... read more

After returning from the impressive Tayrona National Park we checked back into the hostel we were previously at in Taganga. Since the previous visit to Taganga I had been considering doing my PADI Open Water diving course, I knew that it would be my last opportunity for a while to be able to do it and especially at a low price so I decided to go for it. I did a bit of research and asked around a bit and found out that Aquantis Dive Centre seemed to be the best bet. I went in and booked for the next day...the course takes 3 days to complete and that varies from place to place as I know some people who have done it over more days. I had to watch a 3hr to video to begin ... read more

A 5hr shuttle ride took us through Santa Marta and into the horse shoe bay of Taganga. The Lonely Planet describes the place as ‘a small fishing village that doesn’t know what’s hit it’ and I tend to agree on this occasion. The town is tiny and there are only a few streets with the main one being along the front next to the beach and the sea. Taganga is a backpacker place mainly and is in a great location to go to the Tayrona National Park and is also a popular place to do your PADI diving course because of the low cost which is similar to the Bay Islands in Honduras, Bocas del Toro in Panama and Koh Tao in Thailand which are among the cheapest in the world. When you’re in Taganga you ... read more
