Remember this happy crew? We celebrated Julie's birthday while we were doing our 'helping'. She got a shiney new bike and a pair of fur-lined slippers amongst other thoughtful gifts. Now if she can on... [more]

One street scene
One street scene
This snow -cleared street is very passale but side streets are more challenging. You can see the snow on all the rooftops, like frosting on a cake.
There's not much to report. Our only travel today was forthand back with James to KindergartenWeather moderated only slightly to a high of -8 C today and mostly bright sunshine. When we contacted southern Alberta we were told that at home they experienced extreme chinook winds yesterday, gusting in places to 120 km/h. That wind we don't miss! [View Full Entry]

The car, the house, the snow.
The car, the house, the snow.
We had about one millimeter of ice coated on the vehicles this morning from the freezing rain prior to the snowfall. The all-wheel drive Subaru Outback is a great car for these streets.
We'll be in Ft. Mcmurray about another week. Most travelblog patrons are young folk on exotic journeys, I presume. Us proud grandparents probably get more grandchildren visits in, more chaotic than exotic but every corner of the round world is interesting as we look for the unique and beautiful. I'm going to show a bit of the snow piled up. Today, my 5-year-old grandson and I spent a pleasant hour at the playground, frolicking in the soft stuff. He enjoyed leaping and sliding off that equipment, landing in the unpacked drifts capped off with the 6 inches (15 cm) of fresh [View Full Entry]

This tired mom started labour at 4:00 AM Friday, gave birth at 7 AM and was home less than 12 hours later!
One can only marvel at the wonder of the wide-open spaces of Canada. Here in Ft. McMurray, Alberta exists a modern city of about 60,000 people on what might be termed a frontier of the north. It is a gold-rush city only it is black gold that is trapped in the Great Tar Sands. Huge multi-billion daollar companies with equally huge and elaborate equipment and plants are 'extracting' that oil now for the world market. Our son-in-law is a plumbing contractor, plying his special trade for the booming construction industry hee. Wages are very high, expenses for living are very high [View Full Entry]

The Kidney Stone
The Kidney Stone
3.8 mmm across, this little beauty, shown beside a Canadian dime and my finger tip was the cause of much discomfort.
So! The only 'travel' involved in this entry is that of one miserable kidney stone! It took over a full week from first encountered to expelled but at 4:45 PM it clunked into my collection pan here at home. My misery of the Christmas weekend is well documented on my last blog entry. Since then I have suffered daily to one degree or another going from great relief to deep pain within minutes but usually just lasting about an hour or two each day. Anyway, enough said. It's asimple blog entry. One picture shows the bigger stone, abour 3.8 mm across. [View Full Entry]

This blog is mostly about selfish me! I have been 3 & 1/2 days without food and with very minute amounts of clear fluid. The diagnosis, after those three days of prodding and poking in two hospitals by numerous medical personel is that I have a 4 mm kidney stone that is yet to release itself. Complicating this is a bowel ileus (paralysis of a section of the bowel that does not allow peristalis to move the food and liquids and results in build up of gas distending the stomach) causing as much pain as the kidney stone itself. Of course [View Full Entry]

Harvest
Harvest
Our small garden does produce, sufficient for us to enjoy some winter storage but mostly just fresh veggies as they mature. The potatoes look mighty good.
It's been awhile. We have not traveled far but life has been far from dull. We took a wee harvest from our garden completed with the spuds in September. In Oct we took a trip to Calgary to celebrate the 25th anniversay of the Bennets, seen in the second picture. Much else has been going on but a most significant sad event was the passing of a brother-in-law, Tom Miller, in Victoria BC. We took a quick trip out there and joined with many family members for the services and isn support of Don's bereaved sister, Sheila. [View Full Entry]
