Today I learned another lesson mentioned by Burning Man veterans, the hard way. Physically, the body requires some time to recover from the festival. Some people are shocked I planned any driving this soon afterward. While a day in Reno is enough for a mental recharge, I needed more physically. If that’s not enough, I’ve had no rain for over a month straight, which means I haven’t had the top up for any drives. The wind, dry air, and residue of Burning Man finally hit me hard. Today, I spent nearly all my time in bed. I found this surprising, although I shouldn’t have (see ). I have to hope things become less overwhelming in the future, or I will need to cut down the amount I do each day simply to survive. At least I ... read more

I started today at the Steinbeck Center in Salinas. Salinas itself is the hub of the Salinas Valley. John Steinbeck wrote novels based on the lives of migrant workers in the valley, and became famous. Like most high school students, I had to read the Grapes of Wrath, which I hated. Later in life I discovered his non-fiction work like Travels With Charlie. I enjoyed this book a great deal, and it partly inspired my own road trip. John Steinbeck The center exhibits describe each of Steinbeck’s most important novels. They way h... read more

Today, I am in one of California’s ultimate beach towns, Santa Cruz. Cities near Los Angeles get all the publicity in this department, because they are much larger, but the much of the culture started here. The Santa Cruz Museum of History and Art covers the story. Santa Cruz History Santa Cruz’s early history mirrors that of California as a whole (see ). The first inhabitants were Native Americans. Those who settled here were very good basket makers. The first Spanish expedition arrived in 1592. The area became a center of cattle ranching. Spanish missionaries built a mission here in 1791, which gave the settlement its name. American settlers started to appear in the early 1800s, mostly traders. ... read more

Silicon Valley For those who like technology, Silicon Valley is a place of myth, the modern equivalent of the western Sierra in 1849. This cluster of cities between Palo Alto and San Jose has an amazing concentration of incredibly smart engineers, along with adventurous investors. Their constant interactions and competition create ideas, products, and companies that revolutionize how people use computers, the internet, and modern life. People here create things that change the world. Local boosters like to claim that this environment only exists in this one small area. In reality, it also exists in other parts of the country (Boston MA, Seattle WA, Austin TX) but no... read more

Today I head back to California. The road out of Reno follows the Tokatee River. This is the same route used by the former overland trail to the California gold fields (see ). The canyon perfectly illustrates an effect called the Sierra rain shadow. When winter storms come off the Pacific, they hit the Sierra Nevada. The moisture condenses as it rises over the mountains, so much of it falls as rain and snow. The west side of the mountains is lush forest. The east side and the land beyond are desert and steppe. Near Reno, the canyon walls are covered in scrub. Heading west, plants grew denser and denser until I was surrounded by forest. Lake Tahoe Once in California, the river turns away from ... read more

Today for me is a very important day. With Burning Man over, I now have space to process that I have just passed an important milestone. My age once again has a zero at the end. Within the Burner community, oddly enough, most people prescribe little meaning to this. The rest of the world cares quite a bit. Reno Hotels Post Burn Burning Man also marks the symbolic halfway point of this journey. I planned on it being the biggest high point (which it is, so far). Until now, the trip has been an ever expanding journey into points unknown. From now on, it will feel like a slow approach to the end as the amount of the United States that I’ve never seen steadily shrinks. All veteran Burners I talked to warned about the need ... read more

Today is, quite simply, the worst part of the entire Burning Man festival. Nearly everyone in Black Rock City, except those staying to remove everything, leaves today. County police limit the number of people who can leave at once to keep the road from Gerlach manageable (see ). Combining a limited exit rate with a large population creates a long wait to get out. Getting in may be bad, but getting out is much worse. The official name is Exodus. It’s appropriate, because it felt as testing as what Moses and his followers went through. Preparing for Exodus I got an early premonition of just how bad things would get when I woke up this morning. The desert itself looked better than ever, a plain of white... read more

COPYRIGHT REMINDER Today is the last day of Burning Man. I woke up pretty melancholy, because this amazing festival will soon be over. Looking down the street and seeing the absence of the man, the anchor point of Black Rock City, makes that plain enough. COPYRIGHT REMINDER Today, I woke up in the early afternoon. That shade cover is worth every second of the assembly effort I needed. I’ve adapted to life in Black Rock City at this point. I quickly got another lesson on playa adaptability and planning. Remember the extra tape I bought as a repair tool? The pieces of the cover have big flaps due to the imprecision cutting with a camp knife (see ). The wind pushes those flaps, and the force wa... read more

COPYRIGHT REMINDER Today is my birthday. For better or worse, my age now has a zero on the end again. Ironically, Burning Man is one of the few places on earth where such a thing has little meaning. Most of the rest of the United States treats it as a major rite of passage. People consider birthdays like this as a time to reflect, and then get really depressed when reality doesn’t match up with dreams set a decade or two ago. Burners, by contrast, believe ... read more
