Beautiful day. Had breakfast in bed. Felt stiff and a bit seedy. Played two or three games of croquet in the morning. A party of about a dozen of us went out riding in the afternoon with a lot of dogs and hunted rabbits, turning them out of burrows etc., when any ran in. Also caught a Bandicoot Rat and chased kangaroo and native cat but did not get them. Afterwards the Doc and I went back with Erskine and Allen Parker to Park Nook, the place we went to on our first ride, where Mrs O'C's brother lives. Had some tea and about 9 o'clock went out opossum shooting, it being a bright moonlight night. We were out till half past one in the morning and saw 8 and shot them all, 5 of them ... read more

Woke by the Doc in the night, he being sick. In the morning, it being a showery blustery one, the Doc and I walked over to the wool shed. In the afternoon, had a very bad headache and was sick. Turned into bed about 5 o'clock, felt very stiff and tired after my ride. The others went out in the afternoon and had good sport riding after rabbits.... read more

Showery windy day. About 10 o'clock, 4 of us men turned out for a ride. I took care that I was mounted on a very quiet animal. We first of all went to the wool shed – it then came on to rain which made us push on pretty quickly. The shed was a brick building with a wooden place for shearing behind it. From there we went to see the sheep washed – it seemed a cruel process for the sheep, one being drowned during the operation while we were there and several nearly so. About 12 Mrs O'C and the two Miss O'C's came up on horseback. We mounted and joined them and rode to a place three miles further on called the “Bluff” where there is a small house and stabling. There we ... read more

Left Longford for *Connorville. Had breakfast with the A's about 8. G A coming to see us off. Went by mail cart to a small town about 8 miles off called Cressy where we waited an hour or so for another mail cart, a very rough and ready concern drawn by one horse. The road was by no means as good as the others I have been along here and we were considerably jolted. After going along in this style for about 10 miles, we came to a Mr Gatensby's Farm where we had to get out as the mail cart went off in another direction. G A told us that if we asked for Tom Gatensby and told him we came from the Arthur's and were going on to Connorville, that he would drive us ... read more

George A and his young lady (a Miss Barnes) whom we called for on our way, the Doc and myself, drove over to a small town about 8 miles from Longford, called Carrick. G A's brother being the incumbent of the Parish. We got there just about church time. The drive over was very pleasant, the road good as all roads in Tasmania are, the view fine and the company nice. The roads and fields are fenced by hedges of briar or gorse as in England. After service we went to the Rectory and had dinner there – we were a large party, there being 5 children, Mr and Mrs C A are very nice, he is in bad health. After dinner, the same four drove over to *“Entally”, belonging to the Hon. Reibey, Mrs A's ... read more

Went for a regular scramble after breakfast. Tried to get to the 2nd basin but failed. Obtained however, a further view of the South Esk and mountains which are very wild and fine. It was an awful hot walk. Went down the hill and made for the 3rd basin, had then a splendid view of river and hills. Came back and left Launceston by the 12.40 train, D turning up just in time to say goodbye. The country en route is very beautiful, the North Esk peeping out in different places, hills and mountains in the distance and in the foreground, well cultivated fields most of them divided by hedges as in the Old Country. Many of the hedges were of briar rose which seems common about here. At one of the stations on our way, ... read more

Got up and had a walk before breakfast to what is called the People's Park, a small garden just outside the town opposite the station. Breakfasted at 8.30 in the same fashion as we had tea last night, all sitting at a long table. At 10.30 Dowling came according to arrangement with a buggy or wagonette and pair and took us for a drive to see some scenery about 8 miles out. The drive was a pretty one. The hedges on each side were of briar roses which are now in blossom. We came to another river, the North Esk, which meanders about in the most extraordinary style. The scenery here and there being very pretty. We came to a bridge over the same river where we got out and walked about. The river flowed thro' ... read more

Woke pretty early having spent a nearly sleepless night as being in the cabin next the stern had the full benefit of the screw – the row and vibration being wretched. About 6 the steward bought us coffee, or rather me for the Doc would not take any. Got up and had a walk on deck before breakfast. Found that some of the male passengers had not been to bed at all, but had just laid down in the saloon all night. A fine day, the wind having gone down. About 12 o'clock, came to the mouth of the River Tamar. The coast is very rugged with lofty hills rising beyond and trees and scrub growing nearly down to the water edge. The Tamar winds about thro' some very fine scenery, hilly and having some fine ... read more

After breakfast went over to the London Tavern and found Mr & Mrs W at breakfast. W went out on business. Mrs W and I went to meet the Doc who was coming from Ballarat, then, when the Doc turned up, we drove to the Union Hotel where I finished packing and then drove down to the Queen's Wharf where the steamer for Launceston, Tasmania started. It was only about a ¼ hour drive from the hotel. Had a row with cabbie about the fare – he wanted more than I felt inclined to give. We expected W to turn up but he didn't. Just as were leaving, Towie came to say goodbye –came alone as Mrs T was at rehearsal. Steamed down the Yarra, a narrow but deep river having tanneries on its banks – ... read more

Got up with a headache. Had breakfast at 8. Said goodbye – rather a sad one for I am afraid I shall not see the S's again. Left by the 8.40 train and got to Melbourne a little after 10. Drove to the Union Club Hotel and found a note from the Doc awaiting me there – he cannot come till tomorrow. Went and booked a berth for self and him by S.S. Derwent. Had my hair cut. Found by paper that Wilkins had returned. Went to hunt him up but forgot hotel. Called upon Mason (Hatter) to ask – told London Tavern. Found Mrs W in – very glad to see her. Mr and Miss Mason called afterwards, Miss M took Mrs W home with her. Lunch at the hotel with W and Mason. While ... read more
