Percy Septimus Jakins
I am a sixth cousin of the above person.I am researching him and would very much like a copy of this diary.

Thank you very much for your comments!
I hope that you find it interesting and enjoy travelling 1870's style although the diarist does do most of it first class but you still get a flavour of the different countries at that time. Paulene

Unique!
This is definitely unique, I have only read this introduction but I can't wait to start reading some entries! What a fascinating find! If only you could get a ship and reenact the journey for real! I am also quite fascinated as my great-grandmother was taken to Australia from Ireland when she was 2 so probably around a similar time and married a bishop before returning to Britain!

Really nice blog
Its a really good blog, loved it so much. It reminded me of my visit to Taj Mahal India last month. It was also very exciting and refreshing just like yours.

Thanks for your interest...
Mell When my dad first found the diary 30 years ago, he did approach a publishers with a view to seeing if it would be worth publishing as a book. The view then was that whilst there were some interesting bits, there wasn't enough to sustain interest so it has been wrapped up in a box ever since and I found it again a couple of years ago. 30 years later and the world has moved on and the internet is a fantastic place! I thought I would just publish it on the net and add the bits of information to make it more interesting. I hadn't thought about an historian but I wouldn't be sure as to which expert area it might come under? If I do find someone, I will of course link it in. Thanks again Paulene

I hope that you will enjoy reading it although it is over 80,000 words long and a bit dull in places - but as you probably know, travelling is not always exciting! With kind regards Paulene aka Roger Edgeworth

Have you considered asking a historian to take a look at this diary, Paulene? They probably have some sites on the internet. If you do show them, would you mind posting a link to the discussion on the following thread, so we can read what they say. http://www.travelblog.org/Topics/29139-1.html

I'm glad that you are finding it interesting although his trip is nearly finished now and there's just a quick visit to New York before he catches the steamer home. His diary is just a forerunner to these blogs! Continue to enjoy your travels. With kind regards Paulene Ashmore aka Roger Edgeworth

Thank you for your comments but I'm afraid that the journey for Mr Edgeworth is nearly over. There's a quick scamper across Canada, down the Hudson River to New York and then on a steamer home at the end of this month. I'm glad you have enjoyed reading some of it - it did seem a shame not to share his experiences of 130 years ago, with other travellers. Kind regards Paulene Ashmore

I'm glad that you are enjoying the diary. It seemed a shame not to share his travels of a very different world, with like-minded people. Kind regards Paulene Ashmore (aka Roger Edgeworth)

Thank you for contacting me. I have already been in contact with the Rev Flint at Rusper church and unfortunately they don't have a photograph of Roger. I'm still looking!

contact
I was reading the diary accounts and found them real interesting. I found the church website which mentions information on Roger and was thinking that they probably would have a picture of him in their records. Good luck. http://www.rusperchurch.co.uk/#/contact-details/4520312839 Rector Rev Nick Flint 01293 871251

I'm glad that you are enjoying it. This part of the diary is a little bit dull but it starts to get better soon and more interesting when he goes to New Zealand at the beginning of next year. I have already transcribed the diary completely and thought that this site might be a good place to share it. I'm away on holiday now for a week so there will be a week's worth of entries the following week. Thank you again Paulene aka Roger Edgeworth ...
