Decided literrally last minute to take a quickie to a European city of note so got an excellent deal to fly return with Air France from Aberdeen. Cheaper than central belt inc train fare and night in Thistle HotelFirstly the 39Barcelona Card39 It39s definately worth working out how many journeys you39ll be making on the metro etc to be sure you get value for money.
A nice Jetstar flight back from Melbourne to Perth well actually quite a bumpy ride as we came back in but it was good fun playing cards up the back of the plane with fellow passengers don't get enough of that sort of thing at home. Well it would never happen on the tube.Only a few days left around Perth but I did not want to waste it especially as the weather was tops so decided to spend a nig

Melbourne Return Philip Island

As I spent a happy time living there back in 2007 it would of been rude not to make a return to Melbourne and see how the cultural centre of Australia was getting on without me. Melbourne is not an obvious city for the curious traveller certainly for just a few days but it definately has charms. The weather on my return however was mostly terrible.Fitzroy and Collingwood where I lived previous

Perth Surf and Pinnacles

On return from my South West it was straight up to the northern beach suburb of Perth Scarborough to indulge in a 5 day period of surf lessons it's kind of rude not too. Checked into the Western Beach lodge just 10mins stroll from the beach it's a bit of a 'long termers' hostel so I had to choose a night when there was a big leaving party. Full of people who don't even stay there all bigging

Was delayed for 3 hours at Santiago Airport LAN airlines not communicating too well but I gu ess if you're flying 12 hours over the South Pacific skirting Antartica with no land for 1000s of miles you want you're plane right Further delays at Auckland airport but bumped onto a not much later flight at Sydney by Qantas then finally racked up in Perth and took a taxi to Britannia on Willi

Best thing about Santiago had to be Chile Hostales arriving in the rain it offerred a level of homeliness and comfort that makes you think you are not only in someones home but perhaps your own home. First tip for Santiago is to try the hot dogs especially the one with copious amounts of cheese and avocado. Then work it off by going for a hike up Cerro San Cristbal when i was there the tr

Paraty

After 3 nights on Ilha Grande it was back to the mainline for the short drive to Paraty no parrots What Paraty delivers is a very friendly old colonial style town with uneven cobbled streets beaches and waterfalls as well as good places to eat and drink and that is pretty much all you need.Firstly it is a good place to do a bit of shopping after the relative indifference in Rio shops I foun

This entry is pretty much just an excuse to put up more Igausso photos including the bird park that we visited on the Brazil side of the border the best part of that were the amazing Toucans with their beaks that would make a Puffin feel dowdy and the Macaw cage they make some noise especially if they receive a tweak on the tail Another activity that should be mentioned is the little shop

And so my 17 day GAP Adventure tour from Rio to Buenos Aires came to its natural conclusion in er Buenos Aires. The ferry from Colonia was fast and smooth and we were soon booked into the unlikely backpacker venue of Hotel Carsson four star The huge dark glasses and headphone doorman was not that keen on our dumping backpacks and sloobbing it out in reception vibe but polite as much as mena

Why Uraguay

With all that South America has to offer the traveller as a continent it might not be the case that Uraguay is going to be an instant must do But it was part of my GAP tour itinerary so here are my thoughts on what i did and saw the main point being its always rather fun to visit a country you know little about and never thought you would visit. In fact the thing I know about Uraguay is th

In Search of Iguazu

The title of our GAP tour is In Search of Iguazu referring to the huge collection of waterfalls on the BrazilArgentina border. To me they were famous for appearing in the James Bond movie Moonraker the scene where the boat pretty much turns into a handglider leaving Jaws and the other villans to go over the top. So after our long journey from Sao Paulo we quickly checked in breakfasted an

The final review of Rio 2 weeks is a long time in one city but sometimes its hard to find the bus station.I left Hostel Arco Verde and went back to a warm welcome at the Lagoa Guesthouse.I made a tour of a Favella not one of the crass jeep tours but a local guide who actually let you walk through some of the streets and get your flip flops dirty. Im under no illusion that on a tour that you

Due to a table tennis tournament I have had to leave the Lagoa Guesthouse for five nights but I have booked a return as you can really see why it gets the highest rating of any hostel in Rio atmosphere the key to any good hostel. Took a taxi over to Hostel Arco Verde. My driver although pleasant enough was a bit clueless first he took me to the heart of the Copacabana and stopped at a poli

Since my delightfull trip to Fuerterventura in JanuaryFebruary it's been quiet on the travel front etc trips up to Scotland have beenthe order of the day family things and a nostalgic trip to see old friends. Like last year with Brussels I decided there would be noharm in taking up one of those great Eurostar Bargains and got a 59 return to Paris leaving on Sunday returnig Monday.Took a bu

Still suffering from the harsh reality to returning to the world of work in London winter I really needed some sunshine and after a bit of a hard slogflu etc a tonic was required. So my friend Graham and I decided to get away somewhere where wecould escape the fast lane but not have to fly too far or spend too much money. And in the end with Fuerterventura we made a very good chocie. We flew in w

It's always likely to be a bit of a culture shock returning from so long travelling so even though it was just for a weeekend the first trip away was somehow always going to be a little bit special. So to get over the shock of a pretty mediocre at best workplace being polite here a weekend in Brussels was to be the tonic a tiny taste of the months of freedom known so recently. And that is w

On Monday 25th June I left my cosy hostel big up for Travellers Oasis my tip for Cairns is if you're prepared to go the far side of Cairns Central Shopping Central you'll get better comfort and peace at night for your money but still be in easy reach of where the action is.
