Hi everyone, Just when you think you have seen all there is to see in scenery and wild motorcycle riding, along comes Glacier National Park! It was not disappointing to say the least. As my title suggests, it was breath-taking, spectacular, inspiring, nerve-wracking, and at times I was questioning my reason for taking the Glacier National Park "Going To The Sun" road. I will get to that in a minute, but first the preliminaries. I spent the night outside of Spokane, Washington and decided to get an early start on the ride to Glacier. First stop was Sandpoint, Idaho. Nestled at the base of the Selkirk Mountains in North Idaho's Panhandle region, Sandpoint can be found 60 miles south of the Canadian border and 75 miles northeast of Spokane. The 6,000 residents enjoy the uncompromising natural ... read more

Day 21 (July 18, 2008) Good morning, After saying goodbye to all my biker friends that had made the ferry crossing from Haines to Bellingham, I got on I-5 and headed for Highway 2, which would take me across the upper part of Washington, Idaho and Montana. I have never driven this route before and was looking forward to the journey home. I know that Route 66 is a well traveled road but Hwy 2 also takes you across a wide variety of landscapes and geographical areas. I can say that I am glad to be back in the lower 48 and know that the roads are in much better shape. And it seems my Wing knows that it is headed home and knows exactly where to go and what speed to travel at! Things have ... read more

Hello again everyone, Many thought that I went missing on my sea voyage from Haines, AK to Bellingham, WA. Unfortunately, WiFi was not available on the boats so had to wait until I reached the lower 48. I know some of you have cruised the Inside Passage and enjoyed it...if you have not, I would encourage you to consider taking a cruise or a ferry north to Alaska. On Monday, July 14, we boarded the Marine Vessel (MV Kennicott) at Haines, AK. This was my first experience putting my Gold Wing on the deck of a ship. I had heard many stories from other riders so needless to say, I was nervous. It went great, but you had to be extra careful on the deck as it was steel and with deposits of oil from other ... read more

Day 16-17 (July 13-14, 2008) Beaver Creek, YT to Haines, AK Good morning/afternoon wherever you are.... In this blog I will combine two days of travel…Sunday and Monday. I left Beaver Creek, YT on July 13 bound for Haines, AK. The Beaver Creek campground has this pesky raven that was hawking all evening and then all morning. I don’t know what his problem was but as you know, they are scavengers and gouge on what tourists leave behind. And they are all over Canada and Alaska. Had a good ride back down the Alaska Highway. This particular section from Whitehorse to the Alaska border is probably the worst section of the road with lots of upheavals and gravel patches. If a person takes his time, you can make it through this section without bottoming out your ... read more

Day 15 (July 12, 2008) Goodbye Valdez, Hello Yukon Territory (Again) As you recall, I spent the night at the Sea Otter campground right on Valdez Harbor. I awoke this morning to bright blue skies with just a whisper of white clouds. The air was crisp and you could see your breath…calm and the harbor was like a sheet of glass. Hated to leave this setting but I had a deadline to make to get close to Haines for my ferry ride to Bellingham. I slept very well in the cool night air. I had asked the night before where was the best place to get a good breakfast and the reply was the Totem Inn and Restaurant. And they were right. I usually try and get a real good breakfast, coast through lunch and then ... read more

Good evening, If any of you took a look at my itinerary, you will see that Valdez was not on it. However, I met a couple of sisters at Mile Zero in Dawson Creek who were going to Valdez and they said that I had better not miss this area since I was so close. Well, that is where I am at tonight. But first, I left Anchorage at 7:30 and did I mention it was raining! Sorry about sounding like a broken record. I am used to it by now. As usual the drive was great even though it was raining and then misty. Road construction held us up for about 20 minutes, but it is just a time when you get out of your vehicle and start to visit with everyone and ask where ... read more

Today I made the 125-mile ride from Anchorage to Seward. It was cloudy and overcast but then again it made for some unique photos. I traveled down Alaska Highway 1 down the Cook Inlet Turnagain Arm inlet that also leads to the Kenai Peninsula. Tides play a very large part of the Cook Inlet and it was out on this particular time I went through the area. Locals reminded me of the dangers of the mudflats. Beside mountains, forests and glaciers, Anchorage is home to mudflats that encompass the tidelands beneath the upper Cook Inlet and the Turnagain Arm. At low tide, the inlet is nearly void of water. The mudscape looks serene and solid, but tourists should not be fooled. They are like quicksand and lives have been lost because people have ventured onto the ... read more

Hello all, Slept in today till 0700 hours (7:00 am) and then went to breakfast and then to the Honda motorcycle shop. After talking with a service technician I decided that I will change my oil when I get home. Honda recommends oil change every 7-8,000 miles. I only have 3,000 miles. As far as the wobble, his comment was (as well as Honda Corporate), "keep your hands on the handle bars." Duh! He did say it was normal to have a heavy bike like mine wobble at slower speeds when you take the hands off the steering. As for the tire issue...tire good to go...just need to make a tire pressure adjustment because I am running a Dunlop Series III tire and it needs more air pressure. So, all of this cost me nothing...which I ... read more

Hi guys, I'm just starting to thaw out and get warm again. What started out as a relaxing ride from Fairbanks to Anchorage soon turned into one of the coldest days in my ride. I don't mind riding in colder temps but after 4-5 hours of 44 to 48 degrees no matter how well you are dressed, it starts to go through you to the bone. It was also raining off and on during the trip. My back is holding up pretty good although I may have to get a massage while I'm in Anchorage. Also, I noticed that my front tire is cupping a little bit with only 3,000 miles on it. Front suspension seems good at slow speeds, however, when I take my hands off the handlebars the front wheel wobbles. It comes out ... read more

Greetings from Eielson AFB For you military buffs who want to know about Eielson here goes...Eielson is located about 25 miles southeast of Fairbanks in the interior of Alaska, and is the home to the 354th Fighter Wing, assigned to the 11th Air Force in the major command of the Pacific Air Forces. The 354th FW supports operations, maintenance, mission support and medical functions of the Pacific, and is host to 10 tenant units, to include Alaska's Air National Guard 168th Air Refueling Wing. Today I wanted to head to Fox, AK to visit an old gold dredge machine that has been sitting still since 1959 and to see how gold was mined in that era. Of course on my way there, I finally got to see the town I have only heard about...North Pole. Their ... read more
