Washington to Colonial Williamsburg. After our previous laundry mis-adventure, I was determined to get my laundry done so I could once again start wearing clean clothes. We found one, made the ultimate mistake of not asking how much and the bill came to USD$50!! We were not amused. I took the train out to the airport to pick up our rental car. Everything was going to plan right up until I had to drive back into Washington but the road I was on turned into a motorway and I didn’t know what exit to get off. To make matters worse, when I did get off, lots of the streets are one-way which isn’t helpful when you are driving in the opposite direction from where you want to go on the wrong side of the road (from ... read more

Day Three We organised a Pentagon Tour through the New Zealand Embassy and had to report at 1000 hours sharp! We arrived via the Metro which we have now mastered as it’s much easier than the New York Subway and walked up to the armed guards with our invitation letter. I’ve started to collect a lot of American coins, especially the 1c ones which are totally useless because nothing costs 1c and you can’t even use them in vending or ticket machines. I’ve also moved onto wearing my trusty cargo shorts due to the hot weather. This means that when I get to a security screening, (and we’ve been through a lot of security screenings on our trip so far), I need to spend about ten minutes rifling through the many pockets of my cargo shorts ... read more

Day Two The Blue Skies of Washington - Did we mention it was warm here? Jeans are becoming a bit much and shorts are beconing..speaking of clothing.. Lesson of the day: Not much is happening in Washington on a Sunday. Do not try and get your laundry done and we highly recommend that you don’t carry your bag of laundry around the dead streets for a few hours trying to find the laundry mat called Soapy Joes that by all accounts no longer exists… Anyway, after packing in that idea, and turning our underwear inside out, we wandered past the White House, being very surprised at how close one can get to it. We bumped into Kris Allen (American Idol winner when Adam didn’t win) who was in DC for a concert. When we say bumped ... read more

Day One: Goodbye New York and Hello Washington This is how catching a cab in New York works: First, you look out into the street to a sea of yellow cabs hurtling towards you. Second, yell or wave randomly, applying a shotgun approach hoping at least one cab will see you. Third, when a cab does spot you, it is as he is going past you at speed, so he slams on the brakes and stops in the middle of the road. Fourthly, you are forced to walk into the middle of the road to load your suitcases in the cab as cars are now backed up behind your desired cab and he cannot reverse, (and doesn’t seem to care anyway). There are signs up at each intersection warning against hooting and displaying a $250 fine ... read more

New York - Part V Well the last day is upon us, the day the troops leave us to return to the UK. We headed out to do the final Times Square shopping trip and then split off into separate routes (Suz and Jase - Apple Store), Jo Jo and Steve to see a long lost friend at work and Rich and I off to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) but all met at McDonalds in Times Square first to either feel toilet or eat burgers (both very important). Rich had also visited a dinosaur at Toys R Us earlier in the day and seemed quite happy about it. Rich and I moved through Moma not really feeling the modern art but more confused by the various TV’s flashing like in the movie ‘The Ring’ ... read more

New York Part IV. Today's Agenda: Shopping We headed off down broadway, (which is close to our apartment) as it runs all the way into 5th Avenue and Macy's which we had seen when we went to the Empire State Building. First stop, SuperDry. The boys were straight into it. I'm not sure the girls had seen shopping skills of this calibre. The boys were focused, determined and taking full advantage of their inability to multi-task and the generous pre-recession limits on their plastic. We had decided to walk because it didn't look very far on the map. Unfortunately, thats the fundamental objective of a map, to be far smaller than the actual distance so there was a quite a bit of 'Are we there yet?' and 'I feel toilet' on the way. On the way ... read more

New York Part III. In the same way that one is drawn to rubberneck at a motorway pile-up, we had a morbid interest in the World Trade Center site. We jumped on the subway, (which we have now mastered, with the help of our trusty iPhones) and headed down to the WTC Tribute Centre, a small gallery/museum run by volunteers who had been personally impacted by the events of 9/11. They also run tours around the site so we booked in and were led around the perimeter by Bill, a retired NYFD Fireman. We quickly lost our buzz as we learnt how Bill only made it out of the collapse of the second tower by a few seconds and was thrown across the street by the force, bounced off a building and in through a smashed ... read more

New York Part II So today we were up early and made our way down to Battery Park to catch the ferry to Lady Liberty. After the full airport security at the entrance we were all aboard and on our way. Looking like complete and utter tourists we used the audio tour which involved a set of headphones and a lot of time not talking to each other as we each learnt all about the Statue of Liberty. We wandered around the base and then up 156 steps (girls caught the lift) and checked out the New York skyline, which was quite the view. General consensus was that not only did the statue look fake, but was too small , (Only 30 stories high) but it was built in 1886 so we figured we’d give her ... read more

New York Part 1 We departed for New York via Jet Blue but luckily, our flight attendant, Tim, didn’t go postal, abuse us and launch himself down the escape chute. He did however suggest over the plane’s intercom that we: “Sit back and relax or lean forward and be tense, the choice is yours on Jet Blue” We had a nice quick flight down the coast (49 mins) and flew directly over Manhattan allowing a quick spy of central park. As we came into land I spotted 5 jets in the pattern ahead of us on finals, one of which came from underneath us. We were too close and catching it up so we had to do a wobbly S approach (not sure if that’s the technical name for it since I just made it up) ... read more

Leaving Cleveland after breakfast in our trusty hire car, Steve, Jo, Rich and I took to the highway to Canada. It took us around 4 hours to find our way and after a few cheeky comments to border control (from Richard) we were allowed to enter the wonderful country that is Canada. Cheeky comments as follows:- Security Guard “Why are you going to Niagara Falls?” Richard “To see Niagara Falls” (said with the tone of - are you completely stupid?) Security Guard “Do you have any firearms, knives, mace or pepper spray?’ Richard “No, but we passed a shop back there but we didn’t stop, we kept on driving” We very quickly realised that our hotel was literally overlooking Niagara falls and we had all of about 45 mins to check in at our hotel and ... read more
