I'd been meaning to go to Nara since I first got to Japan, but most of my friends hit it when they first got here, leaving me without anyone to see it with. But Mitsu hadn't been for years, and gamely agreed to traipse around it on another of our magical, too rare, joint weekdays off. It seemed like winter was about to land- the weather was just starting to turn parky, so we wrapped up and headed off. An added incentive was that the leaves were starting to turn- autumn is one of the Japanese' favourite seasons, second only to cherry blossom. Nara is about 90 minutes from Kobe by train. You have to go to Osaka, around the Loop Line (my least favourite train line in Japan- always packed and stops every two minutes) ... read more

Tigers Roaring

One of the must-dos in Kansai is to go to a Hanshin Tigers baseball game at home (Koshien Stadium). The fans have a reputation for being louder than any other team's, and are considered a little uncouth by their rivals. (Although they would be considered very polite in Australia). All the more reason to go! And now you can add a few more exciters into the mix: - it's getting towards the end of the season, and the Tigers are top of the table. - they're playing their arch-rivals, the Tokyo-based Yomiuri Giants, who are second on the table. - your mother-in-law is a crazed Tigers fan, and tells you you're handsome because you managed to get hold of tickets. I don't know much about baseball, it seems like a game of "Almost, almost, oh. Never ... read more

Kyoto, re-re-..revisited. Finally.

Mitsu and I have been planning to visit Kyoto since we got together. But something always gets in the way...no days off together, not getting out of the house on time. Well, we finally made it. It only took us eight months!! Two of the most famous temples in Kyoto are Kinkaku-ji (Golden Temple) and Ginkaku-ji (Silver Temple). One is aptly named, the other less so. Still, onwards. Taking our beloved (kitsch, more relaxed and cheaper than JR) Hankyu line, we plodded out to Kawaramachi in central Kyoto. The city is so different to the other Japanese ones I've visited- it's still very busy but more logically ordered and less populated with super-high-rises. It's in a valley, too, so you can see where it stops and finishes, rather than the other ones which seem to go ... read more

(Blighty) Home, Part II

So, the weather in England was not great. Still, the weather in England is generally not great and it's something we stoically tolerate (and secretly enjoy pretending not to mind). We tend not to have earthquakes or tornadoes or poisonous animals (only one poisonous snake). But we do get floods, and Cheltenham (my hometown, aka The 'Nam) was very recently without running water as the nearby waterworks and surrounding countryside were well and truly submerged. The weather gods were thankfully briefed before my visit and things were back to normal for the return of the not particularly prodigal son. My first evening back was marked with a full roast chicken dinner at Mog and Beezer's (and for which Beezer cannot be thanked enough). It's one of the things the English do incredibly well (along with comedy, ... read more

This may seem hard to believe, but I hadn't seen my friends and family (other than the intrepid who came out and found me) for over two years! This is the unfortunate side effect of not having the money to move from NZ to Japan AND include a big trip. I am pleased to say that the situation has now been remedied. I left Japan and Mitsu for just over two weeks (tears at the airport, ridiculous, I know), and took my very long but relatively cheap flight to Heathrow (via Shanghai). Robin and Sarah picked me up, we went for dinner (pub steaks- woohoo!), drank too much vodka, shot the breeze and hit the the sack. Sarah ferried me to Stansted for my flight to Northern Cyprus (via Istanbul) the next day. I stayed with ... read more

I have been remiss at keeping you all updated, apologies. The blogs take a while to put together (partly because I'm so wordy and then anal about my prose). Going home and hearing appreciative things about them- as well as complaints for their prolonged absence- has propelled me back into the saddle. Mitsu and I rarely get days off together, in between me working a few Sundays and her invariably working the ones I don't. Or it seemed that way for a while. One of the rare ones we had was dedicated to a "bi' o' Kulcha" as we checked out the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art. I'd had the building recommended by someone at work- it's by perhaps the most famous Japanese architect, Tadao Ando. He is well-known for designing impressive but perhaps bleak ... read more

Well, I know I have been uncharacteristically silent of late, but there has been nothing of earth-shattering excitement recently. Or so I thought. While there have been no major excursions or tales, a veritable plethora of small but perfectly formed events have been adorning life over the past few months. Most of these have been social- usually in the form of leaving parties. Anyway, here are the news and views in no particular order. The biggest news for me-and this is sort of old (5 weeks or so) news now- is that Mitsu has finally finished all of her training and been to Italy and back, living in Kobe and working in Osaka. We don't miss her having to make the last train, and are now a two-flat couple!! Her place is about 20 minutes ... read more

April 15th 2007

My friend Sarah is over from home and Mitsu is up in Tokyo on training for a month, so I had a double good reason to finally make it up to the nation’s capital. I took the day off on Saturday to give myself a three day weekend, we booked our shinkansen (bullet train) tickets and headed north. This was my first time out of Kansai since I’ve been in Japan!! True to form, we missed the first train. Someone made a mistake on the train times, we only realised what had happened once we saw that our train wasn’t on the departures list any more. I blamed it on Sarah at the time, but it was clearly my fault. Never mind, we found out that we could catch another train at no extra cost, ... read more

Sakuraction

Sakura = Cherry Blossom. Sakura season has landed in Japan. The blossoms have come early this year- we've been subjected to the same short, mild winter as the rest of the world, and they're a few weeks ahead of schedule. It's hard to underestimate how big a deal this season is to the Japanese- it's probably greater in status than the autumn leaves, and is concentrated into one heavy week- if you're lucky. If there's a heavy rain, it knocks them all off. And everyone goes cherry blossom viewing, it's a national pastime. I had no idea how many cherry trees there were scattered around, either, not being botanically minded. But once they hit the flower stage, they really stand out. I also didn't know that there are pretty much no leaves on cherry trees ... read more

March 20th 2007

Greetings. I'm stuck at home with a most unwelcome and decidedly unpleasant cold. Boo hoo. Other than that, though, things are pretty peachsome. Fings wot 'as bin goin' on are as follows: Kaiyukan...aka Osaka Aquarium. This place is well worth a visit. Mitsu and I went last Friday. Getting there took a little longer than we'd anticipated. We got on the tube and were having one of those conversations where you don't notice much around you. After a while it eventually dawned on us that we should have arrived by now. So we checked and while we were on the right line, we were heading the wrong way. Oops. The Aquarium is relatively new, and in a very funkadelic building on the edge of the city in a sort of port area. There's also another ... read more
