Merry Christmas from Vietnam Hope all your holidays are jolly and your days are merry and bright. Our second Christmas in the tropics and it's no less weird. It's not that cold, there is definitely no snow, the kids are at school.... But the Muppets Christmas carol is on the tv and I think Santa Claus the movie is on later.... love Kate and Kris ... read more

So, we have been in Haiphong a week now, so we thought it was about time we told you some more about it. Haiphong is the 3rd biggest city in Vietnam, and is on the North East coast. Just like Sunderland. And just like Sunderland it's a huge port, the main business here is shipping. Despite it's size and importance, there are hardly any white people here. Apart from the 5 people we work with, we have seen less than 10 other white people in a week. This means that we are a big novelty, so we get stared at and shouted at constantly. Usually they just look, but they also say "hello" and erupt into laughter. We appear to be very funny looking. I mean, white skin, bigger than them, hairy (Kris anyway), big noses....We ... read more

Well, they finally left the airport. It took a whole week, but eventually after an impossible stalemate, via a political wrangle I don't really understand, the national courts decided that the government should be dissolved and the PM banished from politics for 5 years. As a results there was jubilation in the occupied airports as the PAD had achieved their goal. Meanwhile, on the streets of Bangkok, their red-clad counterparts in the pro-government group, held angry protests. Scandal and mudslinging abounded as each side accused the other of corruption and violence. Nonetheless, whoever threw grenades in Bangkok and whoever fired guns and whoever was corrupt and unjust...there remains the fact that closing down the airport has had a big impact on the Thai tourism industry. I wonder how many people who are taking a 2 week ... read more

A Bad Omen... Soooooo...we had a great holiday in Thailand. We met up with old friends. We spent time on the beach. We revisited old haunts. We even arrnaged interviews in Saigon for our arrival in Vietnam. Then, Vietnam visa bought, we booked two seats on a Vietnam Airlines flight from Bangkok to Ho CHi Minh City (formerly Saigon) leaving on Wednesday the 26th of November. That morning we got up early to collect our tickets from the travel agent. We crammed all our belongings into our bags. The last to go in was Kate's pair of hiking trainers. As she picked them up they suddenly brimmed over with what seemed to be an entire colony of large brown ants that scattered in every direction. God knows where they came from but they'd seemed to set ... read more

The retail district Returning to Bangkok we headed to a different area. We decided to stay near Siam Square right in the middle of the modern, commercial district. There's a little side street of cheap guesthouses (and some not so cheap) nestled in the shadow of the monstrous MBK shopping mall that we've stayed in numerous times before. We got a great big room on the 5th floor of the Pranee Building with a balcony overlooking the city lights for only 400 Baht. A bargain when you consider other rooms on the street were going for over 1000 due to the addition of cable TV. The plan during our stay was to do some shapping at the mll and have a night out in the posher (err...okay, at least more expensive) part of town (no, Kate's ... read more

Back to the mainland In Ranong on the mainland we had an overnight stay in (seemingly) the cheapest place in town - TV Bar. I had initial reservations as to what "TV" referred to - this being Thailand - but I was assured it was "television" and not "transvestite" when we arrived and found it was, quite literally, a bar full of tellies. The front window was made of TV screens, the tables were big old telly sets and in one corner was a television-come-goldfish bowl with real live fish. I didn't try changing the channel. This was just front of house however, as upstairs there were rooms. Ironically, none of them had a TV. We paid the miniscule sum of 130 Baht and dumped our bags in a room very much like a wicker basket. ... read more

Meanwhile, back in Bangkok.... So we made it. After a mammoth flight with an 8 hour monster stop over in Qatar, we landed in Bangkok. It was about 7pm and we loaded onto a bus and headed for Khoa San Road. Once checked in to our hotel, despite having not slept in 30 hours - we headed to the bar. We reasoned that this way we would go to bed at a normal time and combat jet lag. Right? Anyway, we spent about 5 days in the big smoke and our predictions were confirmed - it was kinda like we never left! Weirdly, we had a similar feeling about England when we came back after 13 months in Asia. Having lived more or less in Bangkok there was little we needed to see - so we ... read more

"How can they be tired of England?" - as sung by Dirty Pretty Things Well, this is it. We have now been in this green and pleasant land since July the 1st and it's been a blast. After our well documented stay in Bournemouth we have since spread our time around the North and the Midlands with stops in various places including Brewood, Staffordshire (Kate's parents), Horden, County Durham (Kris's parents) and Leeds (mainly at our mate's Mark and Helen's). It was slightly longer than planned, due to the fact that Kate broke her foot on the last day at work in Bournemouth. And no, she wasn't drunk. Walking out of work, she went over on her ankle and fell off a kerb, breaking her fifth metatarsal in the process. That's a cool footballer injury made ... read more

Kris While we were still in Madrid we arranged a job in England for the summer - working for EF International Language Schools in Bournemouth. The draw of this, other than money was the free accommodation and the fact that, unlike other language summer school we didn't have to look after kids between lessons. Anyway, the way the summer schools system works is that lots of people from around the world come to study English in Britain for the duration of the summer. Some of them even stay for a whole academic year, but there's a particularly high peak in the summer months. As a result, language schools that cater for this need a lot of temporary staff during this time. Which is good for me and Kate. Think of Bournemouth. What springs to mind? Personally, ... read more

This has took a while to get online because we have been such busy bees lately. But now, as we have some time to reminice...this is how our return to ENgland from Spain went... P.S. I apologise for the title - "London Calling". I wanted a song name with London in it, that's all. It was either that or "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner". But I'm not. Anyway... London calling We arrived into Gatwick airport from Madrid and headed straight into central London, making our way to Archway Road and the home of my 2 friends from university - Stu and Clare. I hadn't seen either of them since pre-Thailand and they thankfully invited us to spend a couple of nights round there's when we arrived back in England. Which was nice. Stu did his ... read more
