Even though we just had a holiday in England for Christmas....another holiday was forced upon us as preparations were made for another new year. Lunar new year. Tet in Vietnam Chinese new year around the world. In China they39re leaving the year of the rabbit in Vietnam they39re leaving the year of the cat for undisclosed taxonomic disagreements but they39re both entering the year of

Not as easily as some people think quite a few friends back home mention that they imagine us lying on a beach every weekend. The problem w

Just a short blog this time around to get some pictures up of our most recent trip home for a visit. No we weren39t invited to the royal wedding but we were invited to our parents39 and our friends39 houses. Which is even better. We left Saigon and landed in Heathrow...and then got straight on a National Express bus for a daylong journey almost the full length of England up to County D

The Gili Air Witch Project

After three days and night on Gili Trawangan we decided to move on to somewhere quieter. We jumped on an island hopping boat all of 23000 IDR for a half hour trip to Gili Air the nearest island to Lombok. This island proved to be much more like what we were expecting. Really quiet and peaceful but still with a few bars and restaurants to keep us stocked with Bintang beer. The snorkelling a mer

As if one paradise tropical island wasn't enough we headed to more. After our stay in Ubud we went by minibus and speedboat to Gili Trawangan near Lombok a mere 4 hour journey away. The steep 140 return trip pricetag may have put us off but this is the wet season and therefore off peak. This added to several different speedboat companies and thus there were bargains to be had. Our journey ou

If you do remember the contents of this blog are the exclusive opinions of the writers....Ubud has a great location.
Kris This blog is late. Really late. We went to Hong Kong on a 3 night stay en route to the UK back in August 2010 and I'm writing this in Vietnam in January 2011. Ah well better late than never... That was Hanoi This is Hong Kong As I mentioned above we ended up in Hong Kong following the minitour of Vietnam with Kate's parents described in the previous blog. We flew to Hong Kong for a

Hello Nice to see you again It's been a while....Wow it's been a while since we last blogged and there's loads to catch up on. Life in Ho Chi Minh City goes on as normal. Perhaps that's part of the reason for the lack of blogs it seems less like travelling when you live somewhere for a long time and you forget about writing about it. Whilst it probably seems like it's all exotic when you're

It's been a long time since we blogged anything so it seems like as good as time as any for an update. We have been in Ho Chi Minh City for about 3 months now and everything has fallen into place. We have jobs an apartment have joined a gym and have spent many a weekend exploring the city and meeting people. A few friends from Haiphong have also moved down here too so our social life is taking o

Not sure whether it's a friend or food....

Finding somewhere to live For the first month of life in Ho Chi Minh City we lived in a hotel on the backpacker street of Bui Vien. It was perfectly comfortable but you can't live in a hotel for long. It's cheap enough here you can get a hotel room with en suite air con and cable for 1220 a night but two people in one hotel room is a bit much for your personal space and can get really boring

Returning to CambodiaWe first visited Cambodia at the very beginning of 2007...when we crashed a friend's honeymoon in Sihanoukville the usual reason then... But after that during our time in Thailand we popped over the border quite a lot largely during visaruns but also to visit the temples of Angkor in Siem Reap. Our snapshots of the place from these visits varied from corrupt border off

After a few days in Dalat we moved on to Nha Trang. Nha Trang is a beach resort about 5 hours by bus away via many a long and winding road down through the mountains. The scenery en route was pretty spectacular even the toilet stop was at a roadside cafe surrounded by luscious green mountain scenery. A pretty amazing place for a loo. Nha Trang is actually quite a big city. It's not the place for

Back in Vietnam

We're back. This time in the south. We flew from Kuala Lumpur to Saigon and checked into our usual hotel on Bui Vien in the affectionately named backpacker ghetto. It's actually not that bad. Plus our hotel's familiar and the staff know us as the English teacher from Haiphong. When we arrived our room wasn't ready so we dumped our bags and did the only decent thing we could do went for a

Meanwhile on the other side of the world... Kris We left England in the early hours of the 21st of January. We were meant to leave on the evening of the 20th but a delay meant that we spent longer than we wanted to in Stansted airport and were rewarded with 15 quids worth of vouchers to fill our faces in Costa Coffee. Which we did.Anyway we finally landed in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia sometime in t

Another chapter endsI'm currently sitting in Kate's house in Brewood near Wolverhampton writing this. The sun is shining but the temperatures are low and snow is falling in many parts of England adding a festive sparkle to the holiday season. All this must mean that we left Haiphong and I'm writing this blog to cover our last few events in Vietnam plus the journey back to Blighty. Goodbye mean

The ups and downs of living in Vietnam

The end is nigh Kate It's coming to the end of our contract here in Haiphong. We finish teaching for Apollo on the 5th December and we fly back to the UK via Kuala Lumpur on the 12th. We are really excited about coming home now. We are not the sort of expats who can stay away from the UK for long periods of time. We don't live abroad because we hate the UK but simply because we love the life

Kate Prior to Rich announcing his wedding in the Philippines it wasn't ever a country we had considered visiting. Somehow it's position in the sea on the edge of SE Asia put it outside our radar. Prior to coming to Asia we didn't know much about it other than it was a big group of islands with some beautiful beaches and that it used to belong to Spain and America. I'd heard of Imelda Marcos and

As a result we are even entitled to paid leave from our job. So we booked it well in advance way back at the beginning of the year so we could visit the Philippines.
Yes.I'm 30.Three whole decades since I appeared in a maternity hospital called Little Thorpe in County Durham on a hot July day in 1979. I had a double chin and weighed in at 9 pounds. My weight hasn't changed much since then I just got longer.I doubt that back in 1979 anyone guessed I'd spend my 30th birthday as an English teacher in north Vietnam. For a start I doubt many people in the west im
