Its a horrible cliché but I confess that the tune of the eighties girl group hit was running throughout my head on numerous occasions in the days ahead. All I can say in my defence is that I was not alone, and reference to Walk like an Egyptian, either in tune or action, did come to the fore at various moments of our travels. Setting out with our Oasis crew for the first time, our day began in grand fashion with a visit to the Antiquities Museum with local guide Wasim. Understanding more about Egypt in the Ancient World was the main aim as we wandered about this museum rich with treasures from the Ancient, Middle and New Kingdoms. It was my first introduction to the history of this civilisation, having only vague recall of a ... read more

An Urban Symphony

Car horns, 20 million different sounding car horns, coming discordantly from all directions. The call to prayer echoing out from the hundreds of minarets in this 'city of spires'. The hawkers selling their wares on each and every corner (trying desperately to persuade tourists to look in their stores). The meowing of cats, the clucking of chickens and the clip-clop of donkey or horses hooves. The locals calling out to each other in their Arabic tongue, shouting out greetings or admonishments mid-argument, with arms gesturing wildly as discussions grew more heated. The locals calling out to us, some in kind greeting and some making jibes, presumably about my seeming lack of modesty and 'loose' western ways. This was the urban symphony on the streets of Cairo in all its ferocity and deliciousness. We arrived into the ... read more

The World in White

It’s Sunday in Leeds. Sunday morning in our household is usually a lazy affair. We have a ‘lay in’ (as the British folk say) and eventually force ourselves up at around the 10am mark. At which time a particular chain of events is sparked. If I have calls to make back home, I settle in with a cup of tea and begin the skype rounds. If I’ve missed the time window in which it’s okay to call home, I might laze about with the paper for a few hours and putter around the house before cajoling myself that I read should go outside at least once in the day and convince myself I’ll go for a run. Meanwhile, Adam will inevitably have gotten out of bed, shovelled down his massive cereal bowl, donned his soccer gear ... read more

Venetian Nights

It's been 3 years since I first stayed in Venice for Carnivale and I vowed back then I would definitely return to enjoy once more the party and spectacle that Carnivale is. After two failed attempts, this year my friend Claire and I got ourselves into gear and headed to this mystical city for 3 wonderful Venetian nights. Despite this being my third visit to Venice, arriving at the Grand Canal was every bit as magical as the first time I saw it. On this occasion, Claire and I found ourselves desperately seeking shelter from the heavy rain that was falling, all the while cursing ourselves for failing to come prepared for all weather conditions. Despite being sopping wet, with raindrops also marking our paper map to our hotel, I still couldn't help but smile at ... read more

When the world looks less than peachy I think most ex-pats would admit that their thoughts immediately turn to home. Perhaps its the comfort of what is familiar and the sure support of loved ones on offer. Or maybe there's that strong belief that this would never happen back home, as the saying goes 'the grass is always greener'. In the midst of our recent travel, sickness and car woes, my head has been increasingly filled with thoughts of home and the distance to home has been felt acutely. But having been away from home for 3 years now, the certainties of life back in Aus feel cloudier. Certainty has given way to questions rumbling about in my mind. What would it feel like to be back? What would our lives be like? Would it still ... read more

Heralding in my 30th year on this planet, Adam and I headed to Dusseldorf for a celebratory weekend. I have to say I was nervous about travelling. The night before our flight, we'd not booked any accommodation as neither of us was wholly committed to setting foot on the plane the following day. Thoughts of being stranded in Germany were completely clouding my vision. But alas the next day we 'sucked it up' and set off. We needn't have been worried. The travels that followed were as hassle free and as seamless as any we've ever experienced to date. The flight was perfect-perfect departure, perfect arrival, perfect transport connection to the city centre. It was so easy it was almost unnerving. We kept looking at each other waiting for something to go wrong. Instead, we found ... read more

A Festive Fiasco

After an amazing lead up to Christmas, the grand event was a complete disappointment for Adam and I this year. We started out with high hopes and tried to remain in high spirits despite a growing fiasco of travel woes. But alas, the festive cheer did run low as we faced repeated delays, flight cancellations and the threat of an impending blizzard all standing between us and home. All the signs were bad from the outset and I think both of us wished we'd called it a day at the first sign of trouble. But our endless optimism buoyed us along and despite the heavy snowfalls in England in the days leading up to our departure to Sweden, we were completely confident it would all be okay. We were completely certain we would make it to ... read more

Sleigh bells ring...are you listening? Do you hear what I hear? From the official 'turning on of the lights' (orchestrated by some B-grade British celebrity) to the first cup of mulled wine, I can't help but be overcome by all things Christmassy. Oh yes, Christmas time is here again and I am filled with festive cheer. I find Christmas very different on this side of the world. In Australia, I typically embrace the Christmas season with summer evening gatherings with loved ones ranging from BBQs at home to al fresco dining in our favourite restaurants. I rush about air conditioned shopping centres, dreading the moment when I return to my car which has baked in the sunshine and heat. I struggle to avoid burning my fingers on the steering wheel as I try to keep on ... read more

Sicily was never a place high on my to do list but when the opportunity arose for Adam to present at a conference in Catania, it seemed the perfect excuse to book a car, hit the road and see what adventures there were to be had. Before visiting, I knew very little about this Italian province. I had some vague awareness of Palermo being the capital (alla Marco Breciano, Socceroo star and midfielder for Palermo). Beyond that, the only other thing that came to mind when I thought of Sicily were imaginings of the Italian mafia, conceptualised almost entirely through scenes from the Godfather trilogy, the Goodfellas and similarly themed films. In my mind I imagined Sicily to be full of mafia men-that streets would be filled with beefcake blokes in black suits with smooth hair, ... read more

Its a fallacy to say that it does naught but rain in the UK. This is of course not the case-it's only true on most occasions! But on those rare days when the sun does shine and the sky is blue, England for me becomes a bewitching place of sparkling beauty. It just doesn't happen quite often enough for my liking! The other truly annoying thing is that even on those occasions when the sun does shine, there's often no opportunity to enjoy it as one is caught up with everyday commitments and isn't at liberty to declare a personal holiday simply to go outside and dance in the sunlight. I've spent many a weekday staring out the window from my desk willing some sudden announcement that work today is cancelled and everyone must leave immediately. ... read more
