071007 Utah & Idaho I drove to Denver from Boise in twelve hours, but it was a tough drive. On the way back I decided I’d take two days. Last night I found a place to camp in eastern Utah. Just as I was driving past a huge stand of Aspen trees that still had their golden leaves on them I saw a sign for Aspen Grove Campground. I pulled off the highway and found the campground about five miles down a dirt road. There wasn’t much of an aspen grove there, more pine than anything. I had seen a few rutted dirt roads on the way so I headed back and found a really sweet spot on the side of a mountain facing the setting sun. I got out of my truck and took a ... read more

After a couple of days of relaxing at Tony & Diana’s where I didn’t nothing but watch TV and movies Seaver and I were determined to try Grey’s and Torrey’s peaks again. This time we left two hours later and had much better snow gear. On the drive up Seaver said that the weather said it might have snowed up there the night before so we were ready for more snow. However, there was no snow and the peaks could easily be seen from the trailhead. At the point where we originally turned around most of the snow had melted in the past two days and there was maybe 3-4 inches in the deepest spots. The lack of snow didn’t make it easier however. Once we reached the spot we had turned around at before ... read more

On Tuesday, the 2nd, Seaver and I had the bright idea to hike Grey’s and Torrey’s peaks about 50 miles west of Denver. Once off of I-70 the road immediately turned rugged and we could see snow on the peaks. I didn’t realize it would be as cold as it was. Along the three mile 4x4 only road flecks of snow drifted across the hood of Seaver’s Tacoma. Once at the trailhead the wind was blowing a bit, but we were determined to attempt the summit despite gnawing fears of doubt at the cold and wind. I had a long sleeve shirt, a fleece, a jacket, and a beanie on. Seaver had about the same but he was smart enough to bring gloves. The trailhead was at about 12,000 feet and I could feel it pretty ... read more

070928 Denver, CO After Boise I headed to base dropped off some stuff then drove straight through to Denver. Seaver was at a place called the Ginn Mill. It was a long twelve hour drive and I should have driven faster because apparently the grand opening of the Ginn Mill had free beer until 10 and I showed up just after that! I stayed at Seaver’s parents’ who had an extra room and were really nice. The next day we met up with Neil, yet another co-worker, and headed to Stanley Lake to go wake boarding with some of Seavers friend, Gino and Tom. Bridgette met us at the lake after first showing up on the wrong side then eventually finding us just as we were about to get on the water. Bridgette was…yup, you guessed ... read more

070925 Boise, ID I wanted to drop some stuff off at Base in Idaho so I could sleep in the back of my truck while I was in Colorado because it was getting cold. It being a two day drive to Denver from Portland I’d have to stop anyway and Boise is about half-way in between. I figured I’d stop in for a night and then be on my way…it didn’t happen that way. I stopped in and met up with Jonathan and Evan. They’re room-mates and both work with me. That night we toured the bars of Boise, however; not much goes on in Boise on a Monday night. Jonathan was determined to get some play and resorted to hitting on some lesbians, although they were definitely cute lesbians. Alas, we had no luck and ... read more

070918 Portland Oregon So much happened in Portland. I saw so many cool places and met hung out with some good people. The first night I was there I hung out with some people I work with. Portland is a place where a lot of co-workers live. Amber, Noah, Neil, Tamra, and I went to a couple of cool local bars and made we make it back to Amber and Noah’s despite a couple of misadventures with the Portland PD. Monday after brushing off a slight hangover I made my way to PDX, the Portland International Airport to pick up Sara. Sara’s a girlfriend of mine from Phoenix that I met in the spring. Hanging out with Sara over the next week was such a great experience. She had lived in Portland for a while so ... read more

070915 Crater Lake National Park, Oregon I almost missed seeing this. I was planning on driving up the coast from southern Oregon to Portland, but as I was driving I saw signs for this national park. I’ve heard about it before, but didn’t even think of it as I was planning my weekend. Luckily I had camped just about 30 minutes outside of Klamath Falls. When I entered the city and saw signs for Crater Lake I immediately changed my destination. Driving up to the crater you can see Mount Baldy, Diamond Mountain, Diamond Lake and a whole slew of other mountains. It’s a great view. I find that I keep saying this or that is amazing, but over this summer I’ve seen more beautiful, magical places than in any other three months of my life. ... read more

070823 Hoh Rainforest, Olympic National Park, Washington After leaving Seattle I drove about 45 minutes south to Sumner Washington where my friend and co-worker Bryan grew up. I crashed at his dad’s apartment which was empty at the moment. While there I waterproofed my tent because it wasn’t very waterproof when it rained in Yellowstone. We pretty much relaxed all day, watched movies, did some laundry (since both of us are nomads we wash laundry when we can), and did general upkeep on our gear, like waterproofing, sharpening knives, whatever. I was thinking about going to Mt Rainer for a day then going to Olympic National Park for a day. Bryan suggested I use both days for Olympic National Park and stressed how cool the Hoh Rainforest on the west side of the park was. I ... read more

070820 Seattle, Washington Seattle is a huge city with road that criss cross everywhere and it’s much more hilly than I though. The streets are narrow and there are so many one way streets and odd traffic directions I had a rough time navigating. I didn’t know where to go but had heard that downtown was cool so I headed there. After find a spot to park at an exorbitant 6 bucks for 2 hours I began my self guided tour. At the corner of Yessler and 2nd I saw a large crowd of people surrounding a man who was speaking. I edged closer and head the Elvis look alike talking about the history of the building he was standing next to. He finished his spiel and began walking down the sidewalk, the crowd followed and ... read more

070817 Missoula MT to Wenatachee National Forest Washington Here's a picture of what I looked like when I got off trail....nice and dirty. Missoula was fun, but I felt like I was imposing on Chad and Corey had things to do before he went back on trail next week. I heard that Kat wasn’t living in Missoula anymore and Anne was nowhere to be found. Friday Chad and I went to a place called Sandy Beaches…it’s a bunch of small sandy beaches along the Alberton Gorge. On the way Chad and I saw something that made both of us spontaneously explode with laughter for a good five minutes. Missoula was covered with a thick layer of smoke from many forest fires in the surrounding area. Chad’s roommate Sam had even asked us if we wanted a ... read more
