Beginning in the 1990s, the city has played host to many international sporting, political and cultural events including the 1998 Commonwealth Games and the Formula One World Championship, In addition, Kuala Lumpur is home to the tallest twin buildings in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers. The rapid development of the city lead to a huge influx of foreign workers from South East Asia to Malaysia. Large groups of Chinese were brought in to work in the booming tin mines during the Industrial Revolution, while Indians, forming 10% of the population in Kuala Lumpur, were brought in during the British colonisation of the Malaysia, however, the majority of the population are local Malay.
