From Auckland we flew to Rarotonga, an island in the South Pacific which is part of the Cook Islands group. This was supposed to be our paradise island break with lots of sun and sand but unfortunately it rained solidly for the first 3 days. Rarotonga is such a remote island and only about 20 miles in circumference there is not a huge amount to do when the sun doesn’t shine, we did still manage to venture out in the monsoon like conditions for walks along the beach and into town but always under an umbrella. After 3 days on Rarotonga [View Full Entry]

New Zealand

 Oceania » New Zealand
It's not really a country or part of our trip that we thought about much, it always seemed so far away that we didn't need to worry about it. But here we are in Christchurch, New Zealand trying to plan a road trip for 6 weeks round the south and north islands which is a bit mind boggling considering the amount of ground we want to cover between now and our flight from Auckland on 14th April and the number of places of interest along the way - surely we can't cover them all? Christchurch us a very British like city, [View Full Entry]

We had a wonderful week in the sun on Ko Samet doing as little as possible, sunbathing, swimming and cruising round the island on a moped. After that it was back to Hong Kong for some sightseeing and more time chilling on the boat in Victoria harbour. Singapore was our next destination, a great flight with Singapore air drinking unlimited wine and watching movies. Out into the heat & humidity, we arrived at our home stay hostel - Alis Nest late at night to be greeted by an old lady who took us through their living room, kitchen and up into [View Full Entry]

China

 Asia » China
The border crossing between Vietnam and China was fairly straight forward and uneventful but slightly bizarre being herded between checkpoints in huge grey concrete buildings in small electric carts, we also get our first taste of the Chinese queuing system which is to swarm the counter and push your way to the front and stay there until you get someone’s attention! The first road in China on our bus journey to Nanning was reminiscent of a motorway in Europe and quite strange after dodging potholes and on coming traffic for 4 months in South East Asia. After a stop over in [View Full Entry]

Vietnam - Saigon to Hanoi

 Asia » Vietnam
Saigon or Ho Chi Min City as it's officially known as is a very busy city on the verge of a giant traffic accident. The pollution generated by the millions of mopeds in the organised chaos is the worst we have experienced in south East Asia so far - not as bad as India, but it's bad and the humidity is pretty intense. An interesting visit to the war remnants museum gave us our first insight to the atrocities of the war with some fantastic photography taken by the journalists on the front line, the reunification palace looked a bit strange [View Full Entry]

Cambodia

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh was a bit of a shock to us after a sleepy southern Laos, so it took us a while to adjust to the touts, beggars, pollution and traffic. We spent a great few days in the city visiting the City Palace and the chilling Tuol Sleng museum (S21 Security Prison) where 100 victims per day were executed by the Khmer Rouge. We also spent a day by the pool at a posh hotel and watched the kings birthday fire works on the Mekong river from the Foreign Correspondents Club (we call it the FCC) Walking around the city is [View Full Entry]

Floating Village - Boat journey to Battambang

It doesn’t seem that long ago since our last update but we figured that we should do more, shorter entries, which should make it easier to follow and we can remember where we have been and what we have done! At the last count, we stayed in 29 different hotels and traveled a total of about 6000km overland since leaving the UK 76 days ago. Quite often we discuss the things that we miss and decided that the main things are: (not necessarily in order of preference) friends and family, being able to prepare our own food (especially wine, cheese and [View Full Entry]

Bangkok to Vientiane (Laos)

 Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane
On our last day in Bangkok, we booked a tour to the Bridge over the River Kwai and the floating market - the market was very touristy and full of souvenirs. After being shoved between various minivans and tourist traps, we were glad to be back at the end of the day and decide that we prefer to do stuff independently rather than organised tours. The next day we got a train from Bangkok to Phitsanulok, 5 hours; about 300km and possibly the best train journey so far, on a half empty air-con train where we planned the next part of [View Full Entry]

Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok

 Asia » Malaysia
On our last day in India we hired a car and driver to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. It was an early start (5am) and a long day because we did a round trip back to Delhi for our flight to Kuala Lumpur. We arrive in Agra after a 5 hour journey which turns out to be quite an unpleasant place! The Taj Mahal is breathtaking, so grand, smart and symmetrical - it’s stunning. Despite the oppressive heat and touts, it was definitely worth the long journey and a great way to end our time in India. An over night [View Full Entry]

Rajasthan

 Asia » India » Rajasthan
We left Mumbai on Sunday 19th August on an overnight sleeper train to Udaipur, when we bought the ticket the lady said that the upper bunks are the best because it’s near the fan, “cooler” she said. So we spent the best part of 22 hours in what can only be described as a luggage rack in an oven full of people. It was a relief to finally arrive in Udaipur, we stayed for 2 nights in the Lal Ghat guest house which was really nice and had views across the lake to the lake palace hotel (where James Bond Octopussy [View Full Entry]
