Hoi An is a beautiful, slow-paced, beachy town filled with candle lantern, french architecture, rich food and soft white sand. It has such a relaxing, comfortable feel to it that it is easy to forget you are traveling and even easier to imagine never leaving. On our first day me and Nate decided to rent bicycles and cycle down to the beach (about 3 km away). It was so peaceful and beautiful. The streets were filled with bicyclists, both foreign and local and everyone seemed to have a smile on their faces. How could you not in a place so quite and refreshing? Once we arrived at the beach, we were both astounded at its beauty. The water was crystal clear, the sand was soft and white, people of all shapes and sizes were stretched out ... read more

Nate and I left the glorious lands of Laos for Vietnam a few days ago. Laos was so relaxing and slow paced, there was barely any honking and cars did not try to run you off the road, everyone smiled patiently and took turns with things. Needless to say we were definitely on Lao time when we arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam. Immediately we were shaken up. There was honking everywhere we turned, people were constantly trying to hustle us, we got ripped off at currency exchange and our hostel was bustling with British bros. Hanoi is not a bad city but we were on such a different wave length that everything seemed so shocking and foreign to us to the point where we were overwhelmed. I can see why people fall in love with the country ... read more

It's been a magical few days here in Laos. Katie, Alyssa, Nate and I departed sleepy Vientiane for the backpackers playground that is Vang Vieng. The journey there alone was notable. The trip takes about 4 hours back bus and we decided that being stuck in a local bus with no air condition for four hours in 100 degree weather didn't sound like much fun. So instead we walked to the bus station and kind of waited around until someone approached us and asked if we were looking to get to Vang Vieng. We, of course, were. So for about $1 more per person we chartered an air-con bus to our destination. This was probably one of the more awkward things we have done this trip. After all we were unsure that we would even get ... read more

We (Me, Nate, Alyssa and Katie) arrived in Laos after 15 entertaining hours on an overnight sleeper train from Bangkok. We exited Thailand and crossed over the Friendship bridge into Laos. It was a pleasant open air train ride filled with other backpackers, young and old alike. Once we got into Laos we caught a taxi to Vientiane central, where our hostel was located. Upon check in they tried to tell me and Nate that we had booked a room with only one bed... luckily I had printed out our confirmations from hostelworld showing we had definitely booked a twin room. They begrudgingly gave us a room with two beds and when we went up to it we were pleasantly surprised. This hostel was more of a hotel room in America then a hostel. We had ... read more

So we have been in Bangkok for the passed few days. So many people told us not to spend more then one day in Bangkok because it was going to be overwhelming, dirty, crazy and all around stressful. Well... those people have obviously never been to Shanghai. Bangkok is like a quaint little city compared to good ol' Shanghai. We got off the plane and the sky was blue, people were not honking their car horns 24/7 and yelling random chinese things at us. All the food was good, the people were nice and the smells of the city were weirdly enjoyable. We have been staying on Khao Son Road (the backpackers mecca) in a hostel with our two friends from school, Alyssa and Katie. Things in Bangkok are so exciting and beautiful. The street food ... read more

This weekend we were luck enough to be able to take a three day long trip to Hangzhou, often referred to as china’s paradise on earth. It was a three hour bus ride away but when we got off the bus we saw the first stretch of blue sky we had seen in weeks. The city surrounds a vast and gorgeous lake called West Lake and boasts more then 2000 years of history. We were lucky enough to be able to take a boat ride around the lake to take photos and enjoy the nice breeze (it was easily 100 degrees outside). It was humbling to see the years upon years of history and culture built here. America is an extremely young nation and it is everlastingly refreshing to be in a country who takes its ... read more

Chinese night life puts the US to shame. Every night is filled with a fun dance party, a laid back pub or a free happy hour. In fact every Wednesday and Thursday the whole city is packed with ‘ladies night’ where ladies drink for free all night without a cover charge. Many of these free ladies nights are at swanky bars or dance clubs that have live performing gogo dancers and singers, so they are not skimping on the amenities! However, I do get the impression that all the people buying booths at these clubs for the night are extremely wealthy since they drink Hennessy all night, have personal attendants from the clubs to light their cigarettes and fill their drinks. The average cost for a booth per hour is about 1300 RMB (more then ... read more

So we decided to dedicate a whole day to the brilliantly beautiful Great Wall of China, a massive structure spanning miles. We booked a tour from a hotel right down the street from our hostel, it included transport (about 2 hours each way), lunch and a tea ceremony all for about $23 USD. We thought this was a great deal and they gave us a group deal so we showed up at 7am the morning after we put down our deposit and boarded a small bus shared with about 8 other people. Our driver told us we would be driving to first see one of the Ming tombs, then we would see the great wall and spend a few hours up there exploring before our traditional Chinese lunch, after which we would be going to a ... read more

Today we decided to tackle the ever famous forbidden city of Beijing. The structure was finished in 1420, taking 15 years to complete and used the labor of over 1 million workers. In China’s imperial times, it served as the boarding house of China’s emperors and empresses and as a meeting place for many political decisions. Only certain people were allowed to enter and exit with the permission of the emperor himself, thereby making it the “forbidden” city. The forbidden city is surrounded by a giant walls, spanning 26 feet high and 28 feet deep, effectively, keeping it secret from the rest of the city. Additionally it is surrounded by a large moat, spanning 20 ft deep and 171ft wide. The city itself is massive, containing over 980 building and roughly 9,000 rooms. As you enter ... read more
