I have taken a leave of absence to travel Central America. I'm starting out in Guatemala to take Spanish lessons and then I'll be traveling from there.

Hi friends, I arrived back in Canada on Saturday and am relaxing at my parents' in Cochrane, enjoying the neverending daylight, and working on getting my apartment painted and ready to move into. About a month ago, Nancy Cole, a past colleague joined me in Arequipa for a few days before we headed off to travel. Nancy arrived in Arequipa from the coast and learned firsthand about altitude sickness, a problem she would encounter many more times on her trip. I was happy to have a few extra days in Arequipa while Nancy became acclimatized, as I came down with a sinus cold. We took a VERY well heated night bus to Cusco a few days later, whereupon I put on my pajamas, a toque, scarf, gloves, heavy sweater, jacket and (no word of a lie) ... read more

It has been a few weeks since my last entry (and I am receiving fewer and fewer e-mails), so I decided today is the day to catch up on blogging. The most exciting thing that I´m doing these days is taking salsa lessons. I´ve been taking them three times a week for a few weeks now, and I´m beginning to notice that I no longer dance like a robot. I think the classes are working!! I´m in a beginner class with a few other volunteers and some Peruvians. The classes are entirely in Spanish as the teacher doesn´t speak any English, so I´m learning lots of prepositions and the names of the dance steps in Spanish. Other than that, I don´t understand anything. I´m noticing that I can only do one thing at a time--Spanish or ... read more

To begin, Happy Mother´s Day to my dear mother who always encourages us to be independent and can find anything on Kijiji. You´re one in a million! Happy Mother´s Day as well to all of my friends who are moms 24 hours a day--I have a whole new appreciation for you. Yesterday I celebrated Mother´s Day as a temporary, part-time mother. Saturday I was asked to go in for a weekend shift and worked in the small babies room. I felt that I temporarily earned the status of mother after that shift. Normally there are 2 volunteers and Sonja, the Peruvian volunteer, and we´re busy with the 7 babies. Yesterday, Sonja gave me a bunch of information about the babies and excused herself to go to the bathroom and then abandoned me!! In retrospect, perhaps she ... read more

Hello everyone! Yes, it is another update--ALREADY! I know, pretty amazing. Unfortunately I haven't taken a single picture yet, so you'll have to imagine that part. Poco a poco (little by little). Volunteering at the orphanage is amazing. I am usually with the babies under 6 months, but also occasionally work with the older babies who are between a year and a year and a half, or do housework like laundry, cleaning, and ironing. There are also about 10 or 15 kids who are 2 to 12 years old, but the foreign volunteers don't work with them. They are very cute because they are trained to greet all of the "tias" and "tios" with a kiss on the cheek. All of the foreign volunteers are called aunt and uncle. All except for me are from England, ... read more

Hello everyone! After many months, I am back on the road. I have been in Peru for a week now and am loving it. I´m living in a city called Arequipa in the south of Peru and it´s beautiful. The weather is about 25 degrees Celcius during the day and chilly in the evenings . The sun is really strong, so I keep getting a little bit burned. I´m learning to apply sunscreen before I go out each day. Not exactly rocket science, but it has taken me a week! I came straight to Arequipa on a 15 hour overnight bus after one night in Lima. The bus has quite possibly ruined me for bus travel for the rest of my life--not because it was bad, but because it was so great! Even the bus station ... read more

A friend e-mailed to let me know that she wasn't automatically receiving my blog updates and would have to start checking manually. Nancy, I don't know if that was a subtle hint, but suffice it to say there wasn't a technical problem... Antigua Antigua is a beautiful and historical city in Guatemala. The streets are cobbled and the sidewalks run along the walls of the homes and businesses. It is amazing to see what lies beyond the walls in the city. Historically, a house would have been an entire square block, but these have since been divided into numerous homes and businesses. There is a central park in Antigua which is always busy, particularly on Sundays when all of the families are out. Many businesses and restaurants are near the square, although you can find a ... read more

Here I am in Antigua, Guatemala! I've been here for a few days now. I have relaxed in the beautiful Central Park, enjoyed the international cuisine (I'm not sure that they even serve rice and beans here!), been propositioned by an aggressive Guatemalan, and walked in circles. Although Antigua is built on a very practical grid system, most of the streets look the same and there are very few signs. It is amazing and beautiful to see the historic buildings and cobbled streets. My hostel is quiet, clean, and very nice. I met up with a girl today and we stopped at her hostel to do a book switch and it made me even more fully appreciate mine. Her hostel is more the party crowd. I did take this beautiful photo from her room though. I'm ... read more

I'm in Costa Rica I made it to Costa Rica! I'm at a hostel now and will fly out tomorrow for Guatemala. My trip so far has been really good, despite some pre-trip jitters on my way out of Calgary. :$ Thank you Dad for running to fetch water for me and calming me down. I flew to Toronto and got to spend two days with my Aunty Marg and Uncle Alex. They were kind enough to let me leave some things behind when I realized how HEAVY my bag was! They also planned a dinner and invited two of my dad's brothers and their wives. It was awesome to see everyone and to look for similarities between my dad and his siblings. I flew out of Toronto early this morning and arrived in Costa Rica ... read more

Hello to all of Robyn's friends and family! Robyn is on her way tomorrow morning to Central America for up to a year, and as a surprise I have set her up on travel blog. I'm hoping that she will keep us up to date every once in a while on her latest adventures. I know she is going to have a life changing and fantastic year, and it is an incredible experience to be able to share that with family and friends as she processes it. I'm so proud of Robyn because she has decided to do this trip on her own, but I know there will be times she may be feeling a bit lonely. The travel blog allows people to post comments, and I want to encourage everyone to send a quick comment ... read more
