Quest to the West - Haynes/Scott

Haynes/Scott Due to popular demand we will be blogging our entire trip through South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado and Kansas. Okay, so maybe not popular demand... This blog really grew out of a desire to allow Jake's parents to be able to follow along with where Jake is and what he's doing. We will try to keep it updated as time and internet availability allow.

As amazing as this trip and scenery were I am still most amazed at Sept. 1984 when Jackie said YES to the hardest Question I have ever asked. Thanks for the journey of 22 plus years. It has been a never-ending story. [View Full Entry]

I really thought that the vacation was one of the best we have ever had. We got to experience some of God’s most amazing creations. Devils Tower, The Grand Tetons, all of Yellowstone, The Badlands, and the Black Hills. During the trip we hiked…a lot….and then we hiked some more…I thought if I hiked one more mile I would go crazy. Hiking is cool for a while but after two weeks of hiking every stinking day I thought I would go mad. Also the food. I used to like eating out but now if I see one more restaurant I [View Full Entry]

So sang Chris Daughtry and I think it's our theme right now. As great as our time away from home has been, there's something about the thought of home that makes us quite anxious to just be there. However, it's not quite that easy when you have ventured 1300 miles away. Did you know that there are approximately 1,842 places to wee as you cross Wyoming diagonally? And we got to know about 47 of them quite well. Ugh! Thursday morning we were to begin the trek homeward starting from the cabin in Jackson, Wy. I got up very early, [View Full Entry]

Our last cabin in Jackson.
My great-grandpa's chili-cookin' chuchwagon! (Sorry, inside joke!)
The "hanging tree" at Boot Hill

That's what Grand Tetons means. Or something like that. I don't speak French but Jake did research on it and that's what he tells us. How whoever named them decided to call them that I don't know. Doesn't seem to be much resemblance. What they do resemble is another little slice of heaven. Ohmygosh, I love the Tetons. Here, I could live. Mountains everywhere, beautiful lakes and rivers, no humidity...aahhh! Of course, there is the pesky drop of snow in the winter but everyplace has a down side right? I guess I would just have to learn to ski. But [View Full Entry]

A really amazing sight!
Another fantastic picnic spot!
Jake throwing a rock in the water.

Southern Yellowstone. Hmmm. I'm not quite sure what to write about the southern part. I loved being there...really I did. But if the northern part is wild and woolly then the southern part is tame and civilized. Or maybe it just seemed that way after being in the northern area and loving it so much. The big draw is, of course, Old Faithful. I think just about everyone in the U.S. has heard of her. And obviously many people outside the U.S. judging by the number of different languages we heard. Old Faithful is a geyser, of course, and is [View Full Entry]

Everything revolves around Old Faithful

I know, I know. I've been writing novellas. I'm trying to be less verbose. To that end this is a combined journal for our first two days in the northern part of Yellowstone National Park. Also, for my friend working on the special project - can I get a halleluia? I'm so happy the mission was accomplished. I want to hear all about it. Yellowstone...finally! While this trip is a journey vacation rather than a destination vacation, it started out as a trip to Yellowstone. Everything else was added in because we were going to be in the neighborhood...well, except [View Full Entry]

A really desolate area
"Cooking Hillside". The ground temperature increased to a point that it killed all the trees.
Jake says it's stinky.

Today dawned partly sunny and beautiful. There was a definite chill in the air making us glad for our jackets and sweatshirts. Even though we would be in the van during the drive through the mountains I knew we'd be stopping for pictures often enough to warrant warm clothing. And stop we did! I got in the driver's seat first so Steve would be able to look around. It's also more comfortable for me to drive. While my injured body is doing so much better (I can feel the prayers, guys and gals. Thanks.) it's still hard for me to [View Full Entry]

is it really June?

So here's the deal...We haven't had internet access at all and cell phone service very little. I'm playing catch-up. Bear with me please. They don't serve breakfast in hell. Nor in hell-holes. Not good ones anyway. I hate to start this entry off on the negative, though, so let me find the silver lining. Hmmm. Leaving earlier than expected (because the advertised continental breakfast consisted of stale, dry, powered doughnuts and waffle mix for a seriously damaged waffle maker that kept more than half of your waffle) meant that we could spend extra time at Devils Tower. Yeah - that's [View Full Entry]

Today dawned another beautiful day. I was incredibly happy to be waking up in our cabin rather than in a hospital - even if said hospital was located in the beautiful Black Hills. I was really stiff and sore and any wrong movement almost sent me to my knees but at least I was ambulatory. Steve and I were a little slower getting around this morning and by the time we got to the “chow hall” the boys had already held several conversations with other vacationers. They are so chatty! I think anyone within distance of their voices is fair [View Full Entry]
