We arrived in Kolkata around 10:30 at night after having flown from Banglore. We spent three days exploring the city, including the nightlife, Indian Museum, Victoria Memorial, and the famous Maidon Park. We found Kolkata to be our favorite of the three major cities (Delhi & Mumbai being the other two). The city seemed relaxed in comparison and the people seemed friendlier. From Kolkata, we took at train to a small city near Darjeeling, where we then hired a share jeep (10 or more people in a jeep meant to fit 6 comfortably) and rode 3 more hours up the mountains to Darjeeling. If I were a reasonable man, a man of forethought, I would have taken pictures of the breathtaking views traveling up the mountains, as well as the wonderful views of India's largest mountain ... read more

We got into Goa a little before noon. We decided on Arambol as our beach destination because it was quiet and secluded. It was another wonderful rest stop on our long journey. Our hotel was not only steps away from the beach, but was ran by some of the nicest guys we've met yet. Raj, Ummesh, Milan, and Egan did not only feed us the best food we've had yet, but they looked at us as friends, as we did them. The first day we pretty much spent on the beach talking with our new friends. The next day we got some scooters so we could go scooting around the lush greenery of Goa. We got lost in no time flat, but there is no better place to get lost. We got on a major highway ... read more

We got to Mumbai from Aurangabad early Friday morning after our train was over five hours late arriving in Aurangabad. Instantly, we realized that Mumbai is by far the most cosmopolitan and modern city we had visited in India so far. Instead of rickshaws, there were actual taxis, plus the streets were relatively clean and the neighborhoods were very distinct and well-developed. We stayed in a hostel with people from around the world and spent most of our time doing different activities with a handful of the tourists we met. At one point, we were out in a group that consisted of two Brits, a Welshman, a Dutchmen, an Australian, two Israelians, a New Zealander, and a woman from Japan. Needless to say, our stay in Mumbai was very interesting, mainly because of the other travelers ... read more

First, a few observations: 1) In India there is no coffee, at least not what we in America would consider coffee. You can order black coffee, but it comes in a dixie cup, and a small one at that - if you order a pot of coffee it comes in what might be considered a normal size coffee cup in America. This has posed a problem. 2) So we drink Chai tea, which also comes in a dixie cup unfortunately, but it is sold nearly everywhere and it is very cheap. This isn't American Chai - I'm not sure what it is, but holy smokes is it delicious. 3) One of the more interesting and hardest things in India to become used to is the hand holding of men: in other words, it is very, very ... read more

We got to Udaipur at six in the morning after an all night train ride. We found a place to stay that was cheap and had the highest roof top with a great view. That was the perfect combination for us. We walked the streets down to the lake that the town is centered around, and stared at the Lake Palace just on the other side. The lake is low because of low rainfalls the last four years. It is still very beautiful though. We walked through the streets and realized that this town was different than the others we have been to. It's under 500,000 people. It is quieter and cleaner than the other cities. We got to our roof top to eat breakfast, and seeing the captivating city landscape, a lake right by, and ... read more

We arrived in Jaipur from Agra around 11pm Monday evening having took the lowest class sleeper train - an experience best summarized as filthy and slightly humbling. We woke early - maybe 630am - Tuesday and spent the entire day sightseeing, with the peaks being Amber Fort and monkey temple (over 5000 monkeys live in and around this temple). A theme seems to be developing here in India - many stray dogs, pigs, cows, goats, chickens, monkeys, even camels and abject poverty nearly everywhere. The nature of our trip is in stark contrast to the trip to Europe we took nearly two years ago - it seems old age has tamed us a bit. We haven't been up past midnight once and haven't slept past 830. There is a vast difference between backpacking Europe and backpacking ... read more

Day 3- Agra

May 3rd 2010

Today we awoke at 5:30; which believe it or not, was late. We had a train to make that was headed for Agra. What is in Agra you ask; the Taj Mahal of course! We took a rickshaw through the early morning traffic realizing in no uncertain terms that we were going to be late for that train; praying that it would be late as well. Our wish was fulfilled, and we made the 'Taj Express' to Agra. The train was as advertised: crowded! We quickly realized that in our hurry to get on the train we entered the wrong car. We got kicked out of our seats by some kids and were told that a man would come and check the ticket, and realizing we were in the wrong car; made us pay a fine. ... read more

There is no combination of words I could use to describe the taxi drive from Gandhi International airport to our hostel located off the main bazaar near Connaught Place - the best I can do is say that it is an absolute free for all, with maybe five cars wide filling what might be three lanes. Anyone who thinks Mexico has the craziest traffic, has clearly never been to Delhi. It's quite remarkable that there are not more wrecks. We arrived to our hostel around 10:00pm Friday night, checked in, walked around the neighborhood, and slept. The most shocking images have been of the poor near our hostel. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people sleeping on the street, either directly on the concrete or in makeshift beds, rickshaws, or tents - a lot of ... read more

To Nate Duggins: They call it India. I guess it's a country. For my cousin and our good friend Eric Jones and to Everyone else: Picture yourself in the living room Your pipe and slippers set out for you I know you think that it ain't too far But I, I hear the call of a lifetime ring Felt the need to get up for it Oh, you cut out the middleman Get free from the middleman You got no time for the messenger Got no regard for the thing That you don't understand You got no fear of the underdog That's why you will not survive I wanna forget how convention fits But can I get out from under it? Can I cut it out of me? It can't all be wedding cake It can't ... read more
