| 10th February 2007 Stephen | Foreign Laboure in U.A.E. - From: Dubai, U.A.E. I recenly went to Dubai and saw first hand the very large proportin of labour that was from foreign contries. I dissagree that this is anything like slaverey. The guys I spoke to said they get 2 year contracts and they get double pay compared to where they come from. They said they stay in Work compounds that have dorms of 8 people per unit with shower and ablution facilities. Every one I spoke with said they do 2 year contracts and at the end are flowen home. Most said they hoped they had worked hard enough to get a second invite. A Balanese guy said his job had prety much saved his family because work had dried up after the Bali Bombings. This guy rated the place. I dont think that is slaverey. They are not 50k salaries either, but one things for sure, it is work and they make much more in Dubai than they do back home. |
| 18th November 2006 Sachman | Appreciate your blog entry - From: Dubai, U.A.E. Having been there recently I appreciate your comments but I have a slightly different opinion. I have traveled to over 65 countries over the years. Whenever I travel to a foreign land I usually try to stay away from the tourist traps and try my best to immerse myself into the local culture in order to get a genuine feel of the place. I did exactly that during my recent trip to Dubai. When I looked past the obvious wealth and opulence I saw a totally different picture. The first thing I noticed was that a large percentage of the population were non arab - mainly from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. After doing some research I found out that these men were cheap labor who were recruited to build those modern sky scrapers and malls and perform all tasks that were considered menial and could not be performed by the locals. I was shocked to learn that these laborers are treated like slaves by their local arab masters. Once these men land in the country their passports are confiscated and they are basically at the mercy of their employer. They live in camps out in the desert with no basic facilities. There is usually one bathroom/toilet per 20 individuals and the conditions are appalling. They are bused into the construction sites around 5:00 AM six days a week and work until 6:00 pm and then bused back to their camps. So I respectfully disagree with you that Dubai is a "forward thinking" country/emirate. They might be forward thinking in the material sense but from a human rights perspective there are problems that are barbaric in nature. I will even go as far as to say that slavery in the true sense does exist in the emirates along with blatant racial discrimination towards the "labor class" mainly from southeast asia. |
| 22nd March 2006 Professors Burch | Response from Linda - From: Alaska Cruise 2005 Very perceptive, Big Mike! Each team of dogs is connected to two sleds, with a musher and a passenger in each sled. The picture to which you are referring has me in the rear sled, which is attached to the front sled by cables. The four people in the sleds exchange places periodically so that everyone gets a chance to be the "lead driver" behind the dogs. Thanks for reading the journal and for your comment. |
| 10th December 2005 Big Mike | Linda's sled - From: Alaska Cruise 2005 OK, I love the picture of Linda getting ready to mush her dogs for the dogsled... but didn't she notice that there weren't any dogs tied up to her sled? Bill has dogs, the other guy has dogs. But Linda has no dogs. Linda? |

| 29th August 2005 David W | Thanks for the tour - From: Germany + 6 Good overview of some of my favorite places. Too bad about Saltzburg. There is a great old monastary there that makes it own beer and sells in and a thousand things to eat for lunch at cheap, cheap prices. That might have saved the city for you! Cheers! |
| 24th July 2005 Peggy Porter | First Impression - From: Germany plus six Linda, this blog is wonderful. I know your students will love. I was able to enlarge all of the photos that had the "full text" button except. It's the one of the older lady sitting surrounded by others. I believe you identified her as Irna. When I hit the full text buttom, I got a warning message. The text mixed with the photos provides a nice vicarious tour for the reader. Peggy |
