I hope this isn't too much of a bother. It's not a full scale blog or a travel journal, just some notes from my trips. Please excuse the bad spellings and other grammatical errors, I'm no typist, or speller. Scroll down to see the entries I have included so far. Leave a comment if you would, please, or ask a question if you want, or just totally ignore me. Thanks for visiting!

I've given up on trying to get up early; didn't see the point of it and I slept in until 9:30. And it was noticably quiet. There wasn't a dozen Mexican kids yelling and screaming down by the pool. My room is on the top floor, the fourth, staggered back from the pool, but I can usually hear those kids before I've gotten out of bed. I looked out the balcony door, over the rail, and down at the pool and saw almost nothing going on. All of the loungers were laying flat, the table umbrellas were all closed. The only movement was a lady dressed in khaki pants, a polo shirt, black arm sun-protectors, and a pink baseball cap, and mopping the area around the pool. I quickly put on some shorts and a t-shirt, ... read more

I asked the lady at the front desk if walking on the rocks down the shoreline would get me to the beach at the mega-resort down the street. The way she hesitated and looked away when she answered told me that she was lying. I got a towel and headed out, out past the pool full of the Mexican kids and their noise, past the restaurant I have yet to see anybody eating in. past the outdoor grills and down the steps to the rocks. To the right, toward the mega-resort, I saw rocks for about 75yards and then a rock wal leading to the water's edge, which I could not see over from where I was at. To my left was more rocks and the rest of the cove lined with beach houses and, from ... read more

Trying to get relaxed and refreshed on this trip but I keep feeling that I should be a little active on my first full day in San Carlos. I planned on being active tomorrow. Today I decided to go into San Carlos. Had to take a taxi there since, though San Carlos has a little bus service, no bus comes out to where this "resort" is at. I had the front deck call me a taxi and after just a few minutes it appeared. After geting in I could tell that I was in somewhat of a tourist town. This taxi had tinted windows that were rolled up since the ac was blowing nice cold air (all of the taxis I had used so far on this trip had all of the windows down, with dusty ... read more

And I did start early; always tried to start my going days early. Taxi to the bus station, bus to Guaymas, taxi to San Carlos, into San Carlos, past San Carlos, past the twin-peaked Cerro Tetakawi, to Los Algordones, beside the Sea of Cortez. It is here that I stepped firmly back into my tourist shoes. I am at what used to be a resort, and I suppose could still be considered a "resort", though it is small and somewhat quaint. The only restaurant is out by the pool. Just down the street is a crowded mega resort containing three or four restaurants, a gift shop, a huge parking lot full of SUVs and fancy cars, and a sandy beach. My resort has water access but it is rocky, completely, with one set of five-foot wide ... read more

North America » Mexico » Sonora » Hermosillo August 5th 2010

I keep telling myself that I'm going to get up early and hit the sites early. But of course, I slept in until just after 9:00. Luckily, there aren't that many sites in inner-Hermosillo, so I still had plenty of time to saunter about the city. After walking only four blocks, I was out of my comfort zone, literally and figuratively. I was in new territory and it looked rough. Not trashy-dirty, though it was a little trashy, but dirt dirty; abandoned buildings, a lot of stucco walls chipping away, uneven sidewalks. And what people I did see, also kept an eye on me. These weren't the sites I was looking for, just the scenery along the way. I had thought about walking up the near-by Cerro de la Campana, the tall hill to the south ... read more

I slept in. I didn't plan on doing much today so I was not going to miss anything. I had no idea if this hotel had hot water or not but I really didn't care. I turned on the cold water and just got clean and cool at the same time. After that, I stepped outside in search of food. But I started to get flashbacks from the first trip like this I took. On my first day in Chihuahua (the city, not the dog), I had no confidence in my ability to read a menu or translate anything so I just gave up without trying and went to Subway. I do not know if I felt more stupid or just ashamed. All of that travel, much like yesterday, and my first meal in Mexico was ... read more

I do not know how to start this or where to go from there. I got on a plane in Nashville the other day and ended up in Tucson, AZ. I had heard nice things about Tucson but I needed to keep heading south. A $12 shuttle ride got me to Nogalas and I walked across the border. I was tired and thought about finding a room in Nogalas but, with plenty of daylight still left, I decided to keep going. It got dark about an hour before the bus got to Hermosillo. Some kid outside the bus station found me a taxi and I told the driver to take me to the Hotel Washington, not your traditional sounding Mexican hotel. It was pushing 10 pm but seemed much later since the side streets the taxi ... read more
