New mozzie bites: hmm 4 I think New friends made: 1 german women travelling alone, three Danish girls on their way to Cambodia and an English woman moaning about the heat (no that wasn't me!) AK47's fired: none! Back on the 'air con' bus which I swear is only about two degrees cooler than outside and on to the Cu Chi tunnels. This place holds massive significance for the southern Vietnamese as it's where the guerilla fighters of the Viet Cong captured, massacred and generally tried to overcome the Americans during the war. Not armed with anything comparable to the bombs [View Full Entry]

A bear trap...
Charge..!
A 'souvenir' booby trap

What a start to the day...or rather what an end to yesterday. Caroline and I sat up chatting til nearly 2 this morning, despite the fact I had an alarm call in order to meet my trip at 0815. Up and about fresh as a daisy five hours after going to bed I should've known something was going to go a little wrong. I made myself some sarnies (having been warned how bad the food was likely to be for lunch) and sorted out my laundry, had breakfast and generally chilled. Then I remembered I had to be somewhere.. a mad [View Full Entry]

New mozzie bites: About 4 Strange things eaten today: only 1, so far Disturbing pics of Agent Orange Warfare: too many This morning was looking good, I'd set my alarm (I know I'm on holiday, but after the last couple of days I thought it a good idea) and was all set to get up and have an action packed sight-seeing day. The shouty man was nowhere to be heard, and then before I'd even raised my weary head off the pillow (remember last night's snails et al) the skies opened.. my first monsoon. Thank god I hadn't set the alarm [View Full Entry]

Mozzie bites: about 10 Official sights seen: erm, none Strange things eaten: lots New friends made: 6 So after my rather 'relaxed' start to the day, it was on a taxi into town. I soon abandoned the war museum, on the basis I didn't have time to do it justice, and headed for the backpacker district. Sizing up the various tours on offer, I've signed up for a couple of trips later in the week: overnighting on the Mekong Delta and a tour of the Cu Chi Tunnels (tiny tunnels where the Viet hide during the 'American War') and a temple [View Full Entry]

Easter Egg anyone?!

'I think I burnt my tongue'

Hours of undisturbed sleep: About 6 Total hours in bed: about 12 Number of bites: 6 but feels like 60 Sights seen in Vietnam: hmmm, none yet (unless the Lam cafe counts) I slept so well. Until that is some crazy man started shouting in the street outside. I think he might've been trying to sell something, but I wasn't in the market for buying anything. This city only goes quiet for about 2 hours a day I've discovered. I've also realised why little old ladies pack teabags when they go on holiday. What I wouldn't pay for a nice cup [View Full Entry]

Number of monks I've been accosted by since KL: None Hours of sleep since KL: about 1 Arguments with cabbies: about 4 Mozzie bites: still counting Ohmigod. I am soooo tired. Thankfully on the connection from KL to Saigon the plane was almost empty, so I stretched out on four seats and zonked. I had to be woken up as we were landing. Unfortunately the journey is only just over an hour, but that's more sleep than I had LHR to KL. So I'm here.. I'm actually in Vietnam. All by myself. Still hasn't properly sunk in. First call, change some [View Full Entry]

Vietnam from the air

So I've really gone and done it. It only really occurred to me when I'd been sitting on the plane for about two hours and they brought the food round.. usually any bits I don't like I'd just pile on to Nick's tray. But he wasn't there. In fact noone was. Hmmmm I was actually going away all by myself. For a whole month. But there was no way I was going to eat the sweetcorn on my tray! The advantage of having three seats to myself (in the absence of an upgrade - but thanks for trying Andrew) was that [View Full Entry]
