Here are some recents from the progress of the garden and I am really happy with the project, even though I had to leave Podor due to security problems I am still going to go back there and work and stay in touch with my family. The reason I got lines in my hair as well is due to the fact that I was trying to be "The Situation" from Jersey Shore since we were having our WAIST party in Dakar.... read more
Hey everybody, so yesterday my family the "Diacks" had a Baptism, as my host mom Aisha just gave birth to a baby girl this past week, so yesterday lots of our family members came to see the baby and watch the ceremony of giving the baby a name. I ate a lot yesterday and we saw a lot of people and the party is very tiring as it starts at 7am and goes until 9pm, so it was a lot of people and we sacrificed a goat and ate a lot of food. These are some of the pics, the baby is called Mariame after my host fathers mother. It was a good time I gave some pictures of the baby as a present to Aisha. It was a fun time the guys in the yellow ... read more
Me and two of the other volunteers living in Podor went to the village of Doue; to talk to the village chiefs and see about extending their med hut and providing some more health care training for them. I also found this norfolk state university hat, I found it a while ago, but I just took a picture of it. Its just weird the stuff you can find here, I doubt you can find this old hat in Norfolk; let alone on the edges of the Sahara Desert.... read more
Hey whats up everybody, just wanted to give you an update on the progress of my garden and show you some pics of my room. I did the paintings last spring when I was waiting for my grant money. The garden has progressed very well, but the problem now is that I was supposed to receive a motor pump for my garden from the prefet. But I am encountering some problems with the local government, but I am going to have a meeting with them after I finish typing this. Mom just sent the camera so now I can take many pictures, I wish I could have taken some for my birthday. I just took the foreign service exam at the US embassy, so hopefully that went well. More pictures are to come.... read more
Here are some pictures of a massive sandstorm that hit Podor, it was the first one I ever went through and it was pretty intense, me, Evan, and Jonno went up on the roof to watch it hit our house and it almost knocked us down and than it was so big, it went pitch black and you couldn't even see your hand in front of your face and this was in the middle of the day when the sun was blasting. It was quite an experience and pretty fun, except for the fact that you had inches of dust to sweep off yourself and everything you own. The other pictures are of me, Evan, Jonno, Youssapaha (ag trainer for Peace Corps), and Seck my counterpart in Podor. This is when we just got to the ... read more
Hi everybody, sorry its been so long, but I don't have a camera still, so I can't show you any more pictures, but inshallah my mom will be sending me one very shortly. All the pictures are from my friend and fellow Peace Corp Volunteer Joshua Ficcle. He is in a town about 2 1/2 hrs away from me to the east in a town called Dagana. The pictures include our Thanxmas party we had in mid-December celebrating both holidays as I killed a chicken and grilled it, it was a lot of fun, but also a little strange since I never killed something and ate it right after. We also had new years in St.Louis which is right on the ocean, that was fun. We had a softball tournament in Dakar called WAIST where we ... read more
Here are some pics from my family members in Podor, I live in a house with two roommates that are in their twenties who work at the credit mutual, but the house is owned by a guy named Baba Diack who owns a hardware store which has come in handy since I am an ag volunteer. He has a wife and two small kids but than their are other young people that live there as well which I still haven't figured how they are related or not. Their is still a caste system here sort of as you are connected to your family name like Diack, and it depends if they were kings, teachers, farmers, slaves, etc. And if your family has the last name of slaves than it means that sometimes families that are descendent ... read more
