Manor and I decided to head for Chile and the Carretera Austral. The Carretera Austral is a remote unpaved highway that runs over 1000 km from Villa O'Higgins in the south to Chaiten in the north. The terrain it passes through is considered to be some of the most dramatic in South America--mountains, fiords, volcanoes, and temperate rainforests. Villa O'Higgins is a remote settlement at the southern end of the Carretera. Pulau Sipadan--some say the best dive site in the world. The island rises 2,000 feet vertically out of the floor of the Celebes Sea. Sinking down the dropoff is certainly a humbling experience. Common sightings are: sharks (hammerhead, leopard, reef, whale), turtles (Green and Hawksbill), massive barracuda and tuna schools, diverse corals, and countless other strange fish, eels and crustaceans. I just got back from an amazing journey! My last post was about the trip from Miri (on the coast) to Long Lellang. It proved to be challenging, but it was no where near as difficult as what I just finished. This is Part 1 of 2 about a long overland trip from the coast of Sarawak deep into the interior highlands via foot, longboat, and 4x4. The Batang Rejang (Rejang River) is the longest river in Sarawak. The river system is home to many different indigenous people (Dayaks in Bahasa Malay). The Iban (Sea Dayaks) are the notorious headhunters that regularly clashed with the Orang Ulus (people of the interior) before the peace in 1924. I'm not sure whether the Penan tribe is part of the Orang Ulu, but they are the commonly known around here as the true jungle experts. Bako National Park---where Proboscis Monkeys swim in the ocean and guests are free to roam the jungle trails without guides. I figured that Bako might be a good introduction to Bornean rainforests before I get into the more remote regions. Bako is THE place to see the extremely rare Proboscis Monkey. There are only about a thousand left in the world. These monkeys are very large and have enormous noses and potbellies. You've probably seen them in high school biology textbooks.
