I'm actually writing this in London, 3 weeks after we have returned but that sounds so boring i thought i would at least add Hong Kong to the list. It was fantastic - such a vibrant, exciting place. We loved the energy. It's extremely modern, a real working city - it was a real culture shock coming from Indonesia. If HK was a person it would be a go-getting career girl just searching for the latest label, the next new thing. Shopping seems to be an obsession - all the brands are there and it ain't cheap. On the flip side, on a journey to Stanley market we turned round bends to see views which felt like the South of France. On another journey it felt like New York then i walked down a street which ... read more

In my notes i just have a list of words about the Gili Islands so i thought i'd share them with you rather than bore you anymore with over-wordy entries: Mushrooms Spaced out residents Tourists "Paradise" islands 3 metre waves on journey over No cars just poor horses schlepping you about If you are 20 years old you would really enjoy Fishermen entrepreneurs Sun Coral everywhere (sometimes in your feet - ow) Meeting lots of lovely people - Frank and Aurora from France, Graham from Sydney, Pete from Bristol living and mixing cocktails in Shanghai. Cock-anut Cottages - roosters woke us at our cottage at 5am. Sweatiest bike ride in world and the island can be walked in 1 1/2 hours! No fresh water - salty salty I think that about covers our 1 night on ... read more

Choosing who to fly with in Indonesia is not exactly an enviable task as Indonesia's safety record is so bad that no national airline is allowed to fly to the European Union. With that in mind we ignored the low budget options like lion air, adam air, mediocair and coming up for air and boarded a Garuda plane in Denpasar bound for Yogyakarta, Java - our airline decision having been made on the basis of most successful poster campaign on South Bali roadside sites (told you advertising works!!). In the end the most dangerous part of the trip was the inflight meal - simply unidentifyable. Yogyakarta, or Yogya, pronounced Jogya makes Bali look like a sleepy country town - trafficwise - there are just a mind-numbing amount of people and various types of transport (mainly motorbikes, ... read more

Indonesia is busy.... properly busy.. there are people everywhere.... lovely lovely people everywhere.. and they like a motorbike, in fact i'd go so far as to say they love a motorbike. They perform amazing feats of balance every day by loading their beloved two-wheeled friends with, what looks to us like, unfeasibly large amounts of water bottles/ beer/ chickens (live) /vegetables/sarongs/children. I saw a 12 year old girl do her homework on the back of one whilst her 12 year old friend was driving... asbo? I don't think so! In Lovina , in the North of Bali, we had lunch in the "Swasticka" cafe, enjoying their "gordon blue" cuisine whilst listening to James Blunt's greatest hits. We came on this trip to get away from him! Squeamish men don't look now but girls will appreciate this... in ... read more

Kangaroo - tick. Wallaby - tick. Crocodile - tick. Snake - tick. Termite mound- tick. Didgeridoo - tick. Unfeasibly large spider - tick. Wild pigs - tick. Enormous-eared cows - tick. 4 weeks in Australia and we have at least seen some of the "tourist" sites... though some remain elusive: Bobbly cork hat on an actual person; Koala Bear; Shark; Whale; Paul Hogan. Not sure we will get to see everything though we'll give the whales a shot (not literally) here in Western Australia where the sun is shiiiiinning and the ocean looks beautiful. Since our last blog we have visited: Port Douglas - higher end touristy, not much to report apart from great fish (to eat); Atherton Tablelands - pastoral, fertile land behind the rainforest - we loved seeing the cranes, herons, pigs, kangaroos and ... read more

When we originally booked our trip with Trailfinders they recommended that we have a few days peace and quiet to recharge our batteries in Australia. Fortunately they could recommend somewhere (funny that!) - a place owned and managed by them (doubly funny that!!) - called Bloomfield. Despite not really knowing anything about it and really just relying on a knowing look from Nick at Trailfinders, for our whole trip Bloomfield has represented an "oasis" in an otherwise pretty frantic wizz around the Southern Hemisphere - thankfully it didn't disappoint... actually quite the opposite... Bloomfield is situated on Weary Bay just North of Cape Tribulation in far Northern Queensland literally at the spot where Captain Cook crashed and burned (or scraped anyway) on the Great Barrier Reef. Talk about a wingeing pomme - just look at the ... read more

Mussels? Sharks? Shells? Fans? Swans? Sails? Whatever it is meant to be, if it is meant to be anything at all, that Sydney Opera House is pretty darn impressive. 400,000 teenagers agree. Yes, folks, we arrived in Sydney just in time for WYD - what is WYD i hear you say? it's not a baggage handlers' abbreviation for Wynward Islands, though it could feasibly be that too... it's actually World Youth Day. But what is World Youth Day? Where have you been? Probably the same place as us and our travel agent.. it's basically an event organised originally by Pope John Paul II to get the young people of the world (Catholic world that is ) together to celebrate their catholicism, talk, exchange ideas, debate, pray together. Apparently it also involves teenagers draping flags around each ... read more

We've stopped moaning about the weather now and just spend our time gawping and shaking our heads in wonderment at this beautiful place - probably the most beautiful place either of us have ever seen. The ferry to the South Island just hinted at what was to come, no-one even bothers telling you how lovely the journey itself is because there is just so much beauty to see.. We found that the South Island was the rugged, more in your face, striking, less-developed "forward" to the North Island's more groomed, pristine,, film star looking "back". In All Black terms North Island is more Dan Carter the South Island more Richard McCaw. Both sublimely brilliant, world-class players but quite different. By the way, they REALLY love Rugby here; think football and rugby rolled into one in the ... read more

Just before we left, i had dinner with my great friends Sarah Cox and Anna Holman. Sarah's husband, Richard, asked me about the approaching trip and i was more than happy to describe all our exciting plans. Afterwards Richard, who is from Yorkshire and has higher sarcasm levels than most, was silent for a few seconds and then concluded " so basically you are following winter around the world". I laughted it off at the time, but I'm afraid that Richard (and it pains me to say this) was right! Winter is definitely here in New Zealand. We know this by the extraordinarily large amounts of water which have been leaving the sky since the moment we arrived here 10 days ago. Literally every hour!!! However we are British and rain or no rain our spirits ... read more

Being the sporty pair that we are, we have tried to keep up our training, ok we've failed but we can still rate our experiences: Best Tennis Court: Winner: Sheraton, Santiago, Chile (surface - hard and bouncy) Runner up: Heritage hotel, Pokeno, NZ (setting - in a vineyard!) Best Swimming Pool: Winner: Termes Cachueta, Mendoza, Argentina (33m, no chlorine, naturally hot from all the thermal springs) Runner up: Club international, Arequipa, Peru (50m, 50p entry, empty) Best Spectator Sport: Winner: ATP Tennis tour ( a great companion to us on this trip) Runner up: NZ vs England (deciding not to spend the money to see England get trounced) Most sport obsessed place: Winner: NZ so far - sport is everything here - rugby, cricket, netball, sheep baiting. Runner up: Buenos Aires - because keeping fit ... read more
