Our last day in Busselton was a relatively quiet, relaxed affair. Yes, the caravan park was now bursting at the seams but we were happy to be there because we love Busselton so much, we were in a perfect location and the park facilities were second to none. The ants were still running riot but we were determined to follow the instructions and let them have their own way until the bait blocks took effect. It was a disappointingly cool and cloudy day so the desire to rush to the sea for a snorkel was lessened somewhat, but it was still very pleasant. After breakfast and an hour or so of relaxation, we cycled along the cycle path into town – a journey which was equally as enjoyable as the first time we did it – ... read more

Tuesday 19th - we were still aware of the ant problem but felt helpless in that we had to leave the blocks to work and were encouraged not to take any other action as the blocks could fail to work if other repellants were used – difficult to resist when you can see the little things taking over the place!! Nevertheless, we resisted temptation and made our way to town to do some shopping. Traffic was busy but moved well so we were there and back in no time. Our purchases included another set of ant killing blocks in case the first set of four weren’t enough. Then it was time to make our way to the jetty again to be in time to catch the midday train for our tour in the underwater observatory. We ... read more

On Sunday morning (16th), at breakfast time, I reached into a cupboard for the jar of honey and my hand came out covered in tiny ants! We all experience the little blighters from time to time but I don’t like them in my cupboards. So everything had to come out of the cupboard and Graham eventually traced the real source of the problem which was underneath a storage area at the back of the caravan. Everything was pulled out of there too and we gave the area a good dose of repellant. But we weren’t convinced we’d solved the problem so, just along the road at a hardware store, we bought some poison blocks that hopefully will solve the problem in time – not too long I hope! We put the blocks down in various places ... read more

Friday 15th – and we were rather sad to be leaving Walpole. We loved the caravan park and the area and we know there is much more to see should we ever return. The journey today was almost 300kms and, for much of that, the road wound its way through tall karri trees. The more windy roads meant slower progress but there wasn’t too much other traffic around to worry about. Signs warned of large timber lorries but we hardly saw any. We stopped for a break in Pemberton, a pleasant small town in amongst the trees, where we had a very enjoyable train trip last time we were there. The town’s income revolves largely around timber with a huge saw-mill and tourist attractions, like the train trip, detailing the history of timber production over the ... read more

Today, Thursday 14th, was the day for the estuary cruise which several people had highly recommended. We made our way to the small marina for about 9:45am - the cruise was due to depart at 10:00am and quite a lot of people were there waiting. The boat was already moored ready to take on passengers but there was no sign of any crew. With about 5 minutes to go, a fellow arrived and introduced himself to everyone as Lee. It transpired that he was the assistant for today’s trip and, like the rest of us, he was waiting for the “boss” to arrive. “He always arrives with a minute to spare” said Lee and, sure enough, at one minute to go, the boss arrived. Most of us were beginning to wonder what sort of a trip ... read more

Wednesday 13th and for a change, our journey today was only some 128 kms but we were still on the road by 9.30am. Just 50 kms away was Denmark where we had stayed for a couple of nights on our previous tour so we pulled in near that same caravan park for our cuppa and cake. What a delightful spot! The park is right on the river estuary and as we strolled on the footpath alongside we saw three Spoonbills, a Black Winged Stilt and a Sea Eagle all within a few minutes. We chatted to a couple from Perth who were sat by their caravan enjoying the beautiful scenery. We happily whiled away an hour there and wondered if we should be staying there again but as we were booked into Walpole today we were ... read more

Tuesday 12th – we were very conscious that we should make the most of our last day in Albany but were disappointed to wake up to a cloudy, drizzly day. Even though it was raining, as I picked my way through the puddles to the ablution block, I got an extra shower from the sprinklers that were on giving the dustbins a soaking – very strange! The rain gradually eased so I took a chance, got some washing done and hung it out hoping that the remainder of the day would be dry. So with sandwiches and a thermos prepared we ventured forth into the Torndirrup National Park. Most National Parks have required us to drive some distance but this one was relatively close to Albany so we seemed to be there in no time at ... read more

Monday 11th April and today is the birthday of brother-in-law Tony. We know that he was going out to lunch today with his wife (Graham’s sister, Barb), daughter Anna and grandson Charlie so we hope they had a nice time – Happy Birthday, Tony. We had put the alarm on for 7.30 but, as was usual when we do that, Graham was already up and about. We were pleased that the heavy overnight rain had cleared away and it was a calm, pleasant morning. Today we were going on a cruise up the Kalgan River. We had our breakfast, gathered up the important things – cameras, binoculars, anoraks (just in case) and set off for the short journey to Emu Point harbour. We were early but we weren’t the first there. In addition to a few ... read more

The decision to move on from Esperance was difficult but necessary if we were going to be able to meet our Perth commitment on 21st April. We still have a fair amount of time to play with but we know we will be faced with the pull of places we loved on our last trip. At a couple of those places, Albany being a good example, we weren’t blessed with the best of weather so, if the sun shines for us this time, we will be tempted to hang around longer than we should. With that in mind, and to try and save a day, Graham was determined to put in another long drive to try and miss out an overnight stop in a place that had little to offer. But Albany was a long way ... read more

Today, Thursday 7th April, we thought we’d spend a bit of time in Esperance itself. We had in mind cycling along the front, passing by the jetty in the hope of seeing the illusive “Sammy” the sea-lion, and making our way to the port area before finding a coffee shop for a mid-morning break. We weren’t in any hurry so it wasn’t until about 10:00am that we actually donned our (compulsory) crash helmets and cycled out of the caravan park. The cycle paths in Esperance are brilliant - numerous, wide and very flat unless you venture along the Coastal Scenic Drive when the path becomes a bit undulating. But today was to be an easy jaunt into town and it started well. Alas, there was still no sign of “Sammy” at the jetty and we’re beginning ... read more
