Been working for 10 years at Vodafone - decided it was time to take a break and fortunately they said ok off you go then!
Got a 5 month trip planned with Tucan Travel, starting in Peru, and ending in Ecuador. Then planning to head up to Mexico for a few more weeks before heading back at the end of May...

After our big day in the Copper canyon, we had a bit of a lie-in the next morning, leaving Creel on the train at about 11am. It was a bit busier this time, and we had to fight with a school party to get our seats, but ended up with the best seats on the train - right by the emergency exit, which just like a plane, has the most room! We even had backward-facing seats in front of us and these were empty so we could well and truly spread out and even put our feet up (shoes off of course!). For anyone thinking of booking this trip in the future, these are seats 35 & 36....should you wish to reserve them! Everything we had read about the train told us that it always ran ... read more

Left Quito for a huge day of flights, first Quito to Mexico City (with a 1 hr stop in Panama City) then to Chihuahua in northern Mexico. Chihuahua is very remote, slap bang in the middle of the desert, and produced a fabulous pink-orange sunset as I sat in my taxi from the airport to the hotel. We splashed out a bit on a room at the Holiday Inn, and the most exciting thing for me was the fact that we had a kitchen attached to the room! Having eaten out almost constantly for the past 5 months this was a bit of a revelation and I knew I´d be looking for the nearest supermarket the next day. Had the next day to relax and get my bearings a bit before Tessa arriving in the evening. ... read more

From Bogota, we drove out to a nearby town (on a private bus) called Villa de Leyva. It´s a very pretty place (when the sun shines - it was a bit of a struggle to see this when we first arrived as it was tipping it down with rain), with a huge main square (Plaza Mayor) and lots of quaint cobbled streets (bit of a challenge in the rain!). The main square itself is completely cobbled which is quite unusual and it´s a lot quieter than other squares of its size - it´s actually one of the largest in South America. We woke up the next day to beautiful sunshine and took the private bus again for a day of sightseeing in the surrounding area. First stop was "El Fosil", who was an ancient dinosaur, looking ... read more

We arrived over the border into Colombia with very little hassle at all, apart from a big queue to get over the bridge from Venezuela. I think we all felt we should be able to smell danger in the air, but it all felt pretty normal. We stayed for a night in the border town of Cucuta, at a very nice hotel indeed, with pool, internet, and bar (including very nice looking men both serving and drinking there!!!). The next morning we got dropped at the airport and had to say good bye to Euan who had been our driver since Rio, and Magalee, the truck. The airport was the quietest I have ever seen, it felt like it was our own private airport, there were so few other people. We flew to Cartegena (on the ... read more

First stop in Venezuela was the border town of Santa Elena - nothing much to see here, but it was so exciting to be able to speak a few words of Spanish and be understood!! (I did try with the Portuguese, and thought that with 50-ish days in Brazil I might get somewhere, but was still getting mostly blank looks by the time we left!). Next stop was Cuidad Bolivar, the base for Canaima national park and Angel Falls. This was also the place where I discovered the joys of trying to use an ATM in Venezuela. Either they are switched off, or don't accept international cards, or if you get far enough, they will ask you what language you want, and then when you choose English, they give you instructions in Spanish anyway! By this ... read more

Having left the gorgeous Brasil coast, we headed inland to Belem, to get the ferry down the Amazon to Manaus. Strictly speaking, we weren´t actually on the Amazon for the first part of the journey - we got to it via a tributary (the Rio Mar), which led us around the biggest island sitting in the mouth of the Amazon, Ilha do Marajo - an island which is bigger than Switzerland! A couple on the tour had bought a map of the Amazonia region and every so often would take it up to the captain to find out where we were on the route - this was when we discovered that the captain had never seen a map of the Amazon before! I guess he just knows it by sight - which is very impressive when ... read more

So we left Rio and headed inland briefly to Ouro Preto, an old mining town set in the hills. Its a pretty place, surrounded by lots of greenery, with cobbled streets and lots of coloured colonial style buildings. We found some very friendly locals who went out of their way to meet our weird gringo requests... at the local restaurant myself and a couple of others asked for wine, but they didnt have any... however the owner nipped out to a local shop and bought some especially for us! It did take a while to actually get a glass, since it was white wine and wasnt chilled so they put it in a bucket of ice for a while... then they had to work out how to open it, which was obviously something they dont do ... read more

Left Foz for the big drive up to Rio for Carnaval, via Curitiba and Bertioga, long truck days and torrential rain at one campsite... one slightly bizarre highlight was a stop at a petrol station where they had a set of drums in the corner and a kid of about 7 sat and played some excellent rhythms for us as we queued for the toilets! Definitely helped get us in the mood for Carnaval a bit..! Finally got to Paraty, which is a lovely town by the sea, all cobbled streets and colourful shops, restaurants and bars. We thought there were a lot of overland trucks at the campsite in Foz, but this one must have been some sort of record - 3 Tucan trucks, 4 Budget, Overland, Dragoman, SAS, you name any overland company and ... read more

Left BA and headed north through the Pampas of Argentina (where all the cows live!). Couple of long truck days got us to the border with Paraguay at Encarnacion. Once into Paraguay we stopped at Trinidad to visit some Jesuit ruins, which included lots of beheaded statues because inhabitants of the site after the Jesuits left thought the statues contained treasures. Then to campsite nearby, the best one yet, with a lovely pool, plus slide and diving board!! Spent the whole morning at the pool the next day, not leaving the site till lunchtime. Got to Ascunsion late afternoon, but like a ghost town, the quietest capital city I´ve ever seen! I suppose it was Sunday, but still.... Attempted a bit of shopping the next day, very traumatic for us girls trying to buy new bikinis, ... read more

Leaving Punta Arenas and also Chile for the last time, we headed down to Ushuaia, stopping overnight at Rio Grande, which is a tiny place. Nothing to do but sleep after dinner, which was especially interesting as the campsite was basically a boggy carpark, so most of us slept inside on the floor of the yacht club where the campsite was. When I say most of us, that would be our group plus another Overland group, so about 50 people in the room... fortunately after a carton of wine, some nightnurse tablets for my cold, and the aid of earplugs, I actually slept very well! Didn´t even wake up when drunken people from the other group were stepping on us to find their spot on the floor....! Arrived in Ushuaia the next day, again camping facilities ... read more
