Yes this is Lara & Al video taped with whale sharks! While it may seem scary to hear Al & Lara swam with whale "sharks" they aren't the great white shark or anywhere near a preditory creature at all. In fact they don't really have teeth, or rather they are so small because they have no need for them since they filter feed on small krill. They are gentle giants and the biggest fish in the sea. It's the "high point" for seasoned divers, to see a whale shark which is a gift for so many people who know and love the whale shark. So for Al and Lara to see them was an unforgettable amazing adventure. The truth is the whale shark is more tame than a neighborhood dog you aren't familiar with. Take a ... read more

This video was captured by the guide today on Al and Lara's dive. And YES this is Lara and her dad swimming with whale sharks. They volunteered to be the first in the water. (Keep in mind there are hundreds of boats nearby with tourists waiting to be the first in the water!) Lara who just turned 13 and was ready, willing and excited to be swimming next to these beautiful creatures. This is as safe as swimming with dolphins despite the whale sharks size. We are always on the ball with our children's safety and this had no risk attached to it at all. (Read further blogs to see our comments) To say we are impressed with Lara is an understatement. She kept up with swimming with her dad who is a seasoned swimmer but ... read more

Well I have to say, HOLY SCHMOLIE what a glorious "Domingo" (Sunday) spent at Yal-Ku Lagoon today in Akumal. Yal-Ku is a beautiful tranquil serene environment where you can snorkel and swim with diverse marine life in a calm water environment. We arranged a van last minute and after a 45 minute drive we pulled into the small hidden lagoon by 11 am. The true definition of a lagoon is a shallow body of water, especially one separated from a sea by sandbars or coral reefs. Yal Ku is the crown jewel of Akumal, as Half Moon Bay collects more tourists with its free snorkeling and beach bars etc. This is more off the beaten path and there is an entrance fee to enter the lagoon; as it should be to continue to presever this beautiful ... read more

Al left at 8:30 am for his final dive. I waited and waited for him to get back (well...Ok, I didn't wait, I took the kids for hot cakes, then Marth & I did some shopping, and as I was walking by the restaurant in front of our condo, I was offered free canapes (I'll explain the free part later). I thought Al would be home by around 1:30 at the latest. When he didn't roll in by 3 PM I was verging on being a smidgen worried but knew he was with great divers. But there he was sauntering up the beach with his diving book in-hand and his "degree". I could tell by the look on his face that he had had a fantastic day. They took him out to dive almost near Tulum ... read more

Despite the heat, Al and I walked a total of nearly 80 blocks today. We wanted to walk out of the hopping tourist zone into the quieter areas and see the end of town, and it was so hot but we managed to go as far as we ever had. We walked back along the ocean; what a workout in the sand. I was trying to be in the ocean as much as I could to keep cool! There are bustling beach clubs up on the northern part of Playa that made me thrilled we were in a much quieter area. After about 40 blocks we stopped at a beachside bar Coco Maya to enjoy a cold margarita. Our waiter had visited Ottawa in 1990; met a girl from there and when business was down in ... read more

mañana del Viernes Santo or good morning FRIDAY! 8:05 am here our time and ANOTHER hot sunny day (just like home I hear). The beds are so comfy in this condo it's hard to wake ourselves to see the sunrise every am. But I did manage a short walk on the ocean to dip my toes in. It occurred to me that the little shelled critter the Crab, is the mascot for the Cancer zodiac sign which makes sense with my love of water because I've got the Crab in me...(Now that just came out totally wrong). Crabs are quick to retreat into their shell if they feel threatened or annoyed. Hmmm, checkmark. And crabs have vice-like grips refusing to let go if they want or believe in something (checkmark). (Run for the hills Al while ... read more

How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are? Satchel Paige Well it was a fantastic birthday on the rippling magnificent turqoise shores of Playa. If one must turn a year older then one should do it here. I can't ever recall a birthday that I've never not spoken to mom & dad and my sister Cindy so I felt like a dog with two tails yesterday. One tail trying to enjoy the day but the other tail feeling there was a disconnect. We have free calls to Canada from our condo but for some reason today of all days, the condo was having phone issues. Al whisked me away for a walk in the morning; lord I thought it's hot at home but whewie, it was hot as in in capital ... read more

What a day we had in the beautiful beachside resort town of Akumal. About a 45 minute drive from Playa that Luis our friend had arranged for us. His friend had a king-size van that was able to drive all 8 of us to one of THE best places to snorkel and dive in the Riviera Maya. We were SO excited. To say this place knocked our socks off is an understatement (well my socks would have been knocked off had I been wearing any!) Plush green foliage, hedges & palm trees lined the drive in to the beach. It unfolds before your eyes this long beach with bars and places to rent lifejackets & snorkeling equipment. It has little cliffs and luxury small resorts built on either ends of the area. So once we were ... read more

¿Cómo estás? How are you?? Well Al & I didn't plant our feet on the ground until 8:30 am yesterday morning; that's late for this gal. But when we stepped out on our balcony those friendly palm trees waved to us & the ocean mumbled a low welcoming greeting :) Six fantastic days of weather without one single drop of rain. It's like the clouds couldn't summon up spit if they tried! We've been blessed with good family times without the worry of a ticking clock; the hours seem to ebb and flow away like a bottle bobbing in the ocean. Our afternoon started off with a frothy margarita that Odin delivered to me from the bar next door. Al took some pics of Odin bringing ... read more
