"Life imitates art far more than art imitates life". Oscar Wilde I heard from my girls that it snowed in Ottawa. I have to say, we've had really nice weather since we got here Saturday morning. It's been sunny and up around 10C as a high. Today is the exception with it being a bit overcast & spitting rain. Further to our tour yesterday, all & all it was fantastic. We bought a two day "hop on & hop off" bus tour called L'Open Tour which runs four different routes of the city. This time of year there's lots of room to hop on the bus, so to speak. Yesterday we did the "green tour" which is the main leg of the tour taking in the Louvre, Palais Royal, Concord, Musee D'Orsay, Notre Dame Cathedral, Latin ... read more

“Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” ~ I thought after my comments on jet lag and sleep, I'd give you an update on our sleeping! After a nice dinner of grilled lamb & baked cod, we were pretty relaxed. Marth went to bed by 10 pm and I stayed up until midnight to read & so far trying to keep to the time in Paris has seemed to work. I didn't go to sleep Sat morning when we arrived, (which was 3 am Ottawa time), nor did I take a nap in the afternoon, which I think helped me go to bed when it turned to night-time here. When I did fall asleep, guess "who" woke me at 4 am to ask where the TV remote was? I did fall asleep with ... read more

It's been a day of sight-seeing, and we're just settling in. I will send a more in-depth update when I download my pics. In the meantime, hello Al (xo) and for the rest of you "romantics" out there who want to be transported to Paris, then take a minute to click on the link below & have a listen to Claude Debussy's (the French composer) solo piano masterpiece, Claire du Lune. This piece has a special meaning to me, capturing a special moment in my life, and to this day when I hear it, I am still so taken by its beauty. Its pauses are almost as beautiful as its playing parts. And Al, please tell the girls no matter how far apart we are, we are still looking at the same moon :) And hi ... read more

"The worst thing about being a tourist is other tourists recognizing you as a tourist." R. Baker We are staying in the ideal location; yesterday it was a quick walk over to the Tuileries Gardens, which at one time was one of the largest and most beautiful gardens in Paris. It's between the Louvre Museum & Musee D'Orsay which I caught a brief glimpse of. The gardens are sparse now in the fall, but they are more than just gardens, they are full of ornate statues and water basins, with lots of trees & a lake. Near the end of the park is the Place de Concorde that has a giagantic transportable ferris wheel known as the Grand Roue which is decorated with white twinkling lights and is set up for the Christmas holidays then taken ... read more

"The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page"~ St. Augustine It's hard to believe that a passport can act like a mini-magic carpet that can whisk you off to any place in the world of your choosing. And thanks to that little magic carpet, here I am, finally in Paris! We left Ottawa on a Dash-8 plane which is like traveling in a lunch box & being shaken up in a blender. We landed at Dorval and I tell you, we were all wobbly after we got off the flight. We had a 2 hour layover in Dorval, so we went to have a drink. Marth suggested eating, and I reminded her I made food for our flight because I didn't want to eat, (for lack of a better ... read more

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” Proust Bonjour mes amis! French will be the theme of my upcoming blogs as my beret & I are off to Paris for a week. Oui oui!! After turning down my friend Martha's offer year after year to join her on her annual business trip to the "City of Light", I am finally going with her tomorrow! Yee-haw! Thank you hubby so much for making this happen (xoxo), and Susan as well, for helping get my 3 gals to school! (You're the best!) And hugs to the back-up team, Maureen, Kelsey, Cindy, Mom & Linda L. It truly does "take a village" (& some gifts from Paris!) to make it possible. And thanks to my 3 fabulous daughters for being ... read more

I figured this was a good place to post my recent published article for the Work & Family Foundation Canada, a fabulous organization that I write articles for about family, marriage, children and life in general. This one is on "Why Family Vacations are Important". (I have other posts on there, so feel free to toggle to older posts to see them) Having enjoyed our Mexico vacation this summer along with a fabulous getaway to Cindy & Gord's cottage, it made me realize how these vacations add so much richness to all areas of our lives. (including all those crazy things that happen to us along the way!) Click below to read it! Love your feedback! Al captured us singing "O Canada" in Playa del Carmen Mexico on Canada Day...Yep we were decked out and the girls did a great job of singing our anthem. Before we went out, we turned out the lights to see ourselves in the dark with our flashing hats, glasses & necklaces (part of the reason the video is dark. Unfortunately the video camera couldn't auto focus in the dark so it is what it is and not very clear. It is just to give you an idea how the girls had their pride on display. See July 1 blog on how we did it up big in Mexico on Canada day! We felt very patriotic...and the town loves us Canadians... PS Ava did her own interpretation; it's quite funny so watch her repeating the song in ... read more

Unbeknownst to us, "someone" had a little fun with our camera the last day in Playa (after being warned not to use it). If we had to give a police description, we'd say oh someone around 4 feet tall, 45 pounds & who was acting rather suspicious...And if that stumped the Keystone cops, they could just use the folllowing pics to catch their suspect. If you see this little person who said they NEVER used our camera (pinkie promise), please report them to the authorities. All treats and dessert will be withheld (She did confess & we had a laugh over the series of photos she took when no one was looking.) This is what you get when you mix the Foran/Bennett, Robuskys/Davies together! (And oh her godparents Keith & Danielle probably have something to do ... read more

We're home and I think we'll need a withdrawal support group for tropical vacationers. It was odd looking out the window and not seeing the ocean. We said our good-byes to all the staff at Luna & had a final margarita with Luis! We tipped them all, and said a big goodbye to the security staff who I made lunch & brought dinner to on a regular basis since it's a long shift keeping the complex quiet and peaceful. Odin was sad to see us go; we gave him all our leftover food & a big tip, so he was pretty happy about that. What an absolute fine human being. Works 7 days a week there & has a family too. Cancun Airport was really quiet and no lineups for our flight to TO. Overall it ... read more
