Our 2 week group tour of Costa Rica gave us lots of wildlife spotting opportunities in the various national parks we visited including monkeys, sloths, iguanas and frogs. We visited the Sloth Sanctuary where the baby sloths were adorable! We spent Christmas and New Year in Costa Rica at the beach and enjoyed walks along the beaches watching the sunset and celebrating the holidays with champagne around the swimming pool or whilst relaxing in a hammock. Whilst here we had our most adrenaline producing (and at times terrifying for Andrew) experience of the trip in the form of extreme zip lining. (Why couldnt we stick to watching frogs?!) A total of 12 different zip lines across huge expanse of cloud forest, some as long as 1km at terrific speed, trying desperately not to brake too soon ... read more

Before our 3 week group tour of Chile and Argentina we spent some time in Arica and the capital Santiago. We really enjoyed the winery tour of Concha y Toro and the lovely beach at Viña del Mar. You will be pleased to know that we continued to sample the local wines on a regular basis! Despite Andrew needing emergency dental treatment to remove a wisdom tooth which then got infected, we headed off to tour Patagonia, a beautiful area of snow capped mountains, vast clear lakes and glaciers. Our favourite town was San Carlos de Bariloche which had the added bonus of chocolate shops and St Bernard dogs! We had our photos with 1 month old puppies that were adorable (and thankfully they didn't wee on us). After a strenuous walk in the national park ... read more

Whilst on Lake Titicaca we visited the Uros Islands, which are floating reed islands anchored to the bottom of the lake, on which communities live, go to school, trade etc. Although the compacted reeds are 2 metres thick its still a strange floating sensation when you are on them. After some shopping opportunities our group made their way to another island - Amantani. Here we stayed the night with a local family in their house. At the dock we were met by our ´mama´in her traditional dress and taken for lunch to her home. It was basic but we were lucky as she had a solar panel (so we had light in our room) and we had a bathroom (without running water) attached to the house. Others in the group didnt fare so well. (And at ... read more

Whilst relaxing in northern Peru, the owner of our hotel invited us to visit her house on the beach in Colan. The journey there was an adventure in itself as the final part involved speeding down the highway at 110kph whilst both squashed in the front seat of the taxi with no seatbelt! However, the house was directly on the beach with only the crashing of the waves to disturb the peace. So much so we both fell asleep on the decking in the sunshine! We then flew to Lima the capital of Peru and fortunately we stayed in a really nice safe area near the sea. After a month of local cuisine we didnt need any persuading to head to Dunkin Donuts for the luxury of western food (Boston creme donuts never tasted so good)! ... read more

We stayed at Baños staying in a hotel at the foot of an active volcano on the edge of the amazon jungle, let´s hope it doesnt erupt (it´s more likely that Andrew´s temper will erupt than the volcano). The town is set in a beautiful valley but the town is not much to look at. What was nice though was an 18km cycle ride along La Ruta de Las Cascadas (route of the waterfalls) set amidst the mountains. We have also enjoyed our first zip line across a canyon, a real adrenaline rush. On the way to Baños we visited La Mitad del Mundo, which is quite literally the equator and you can cross between the northern and southern hemisphere with one step! It was really interesting to do the experiments with water and balancing an ... read more

Arrived safely in Quito, Ecuador´s capital after a short transit flight into Panama. We passed the swineflu check at immigration and had a pleasant surprise as our bags also arrived. We had a lovely room in the loft at our Hotel with just the 4 beds and after settling in we caught the local trolley bus to the historic centre for some sightseeing. After all our fears about safety, its was no different to Commercial Rd at lunchtimes (well maybe a bit safer)! Now in Otavalo, a town in the mountains, with our tutor after a rather crazy bus journey from Quito. We went sightseeing in the morning with our tutor and then have 4 hours of lessons in the afternoon. The group is only David and I so its quite intensive and we speak Spanish ... read more

The weather in Miami greeted us with torrential thunder storms with forked lightning (not what we expected). The local bus took us to where our Hotel was situated, an Art Deco Hotel that should have read not updated since the 1960´s and where the breakfast came with a complimentary heart attack! But we enjoyed our time there, getting over jetlag and relaxing with a swim in the very warm sea and watching the thunder storms on the beach at night. A little hot for us though, our walk along the SouthBeach promendade was somewhat taxing due to it being 107f! We were taken aback at how widely Spanish is spoken in Miami by everyone. It lead to an interesting conversation with the maintenance guy who came to fix our TV (he couldnt though). We chatted happily ... read more
