Hello and thanks for visiting my blog!

So, from February 2011 until April 2013, I am embarking on a 2 year voluntary placement via VSO in Cambodia. I will be working as a Hospital Management Adviser in a North-Western province called Banteay Meanchey, providing help and support to the clinical and administrative directors of hospitals and health centres - challenges and excitement is abound!

Please feel free to browse my pages and keep up to date with my adventures - I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!

p.s. If you are feeling flush and would like to donate to VSO to support the work that they do, please do so at my JustGiving page - fanks!

Howdy Hope everyone is well? Perhaps you've seen the news in the UK (& elsewhere I imagine) about the severe flooding in Cambodia over the last couple of months? There is a similar situation in Thailand too, though unsurprisingly the Thais response seems much more coordinated and effective! BBC News - Cambodia Floods So far, over 250 people have died from the floods in Cambodia, with thousands more left homeless and destitute. In the main, Cambodia is a very flat country, which is good for farming (agriculture accounts for over 30% of Cambodia's GDP)....but not so good when floods happen. As well as the floods claiming lives, the floods have also ruined rice harvests, destroyed homes and helped spread disease and illness. Part of the Cambodian Government's response has been to send doctors an... read more

Good day everyone Has been a while since my last post, but I've been pretty busy - honest! So, what's new with you? Here in Kampuchea, things are going very well...though the Rainy Season is in full effect - 24hr rainathons a regular occurrence. Thought you'd UK based family & friends would enjoy this knowledge, given that I'm in the tropics but you've just had the hottest ever recorded day in October! In September I was in Phnom Penh for 2 weeks for extra language training, which was both great and awful! Great, in that I could catch up and see my friends whom I came in-country with, and spend some time with a special someone. Also, having ready access to steaks, cheese and red wine was pretty awesome! Awful, however, in that I was in ... read more

Howdy How is everyone? Riots, looting, thuggery and nation-wide violence aside of course...... As my blogs to date have mostly been about the non-work element of my time in Cambodia, I thought I'd do an entry to give an idea of the kind of work I'm doing out here. Hopefully this will give you a sense of what my placement currently involves, and will reverse the notion that some of you think I'm just on a 2yr holiday! So at the hosp I work at, there has been an issue with the proper disposal of clinical and general waste. Although we have incinerators, the process for the removal and disposal of pathological, infectious, sharps (needles, scalpels etc), medicine and general waste is not very well laid out or understood. Some waste is incinerated, but the majority ... read more

Heellloooo!!! Good day dear friends, has indeed been a while - a combination of business, laziness, internet issues and power cuts have conspired to ensure a somewhat long delay in updates! Alas, no more, will be on it like Sonic from hereonin, promise! So, what's been going on? Well, loads really! Don't worry, I won't be giving a day-by-day account of the past 2.5months or so! I am feeling very settled at work and in my village, and enjoying every day - of course there are no shortages of challenges, frustrations and WTFs, but nothing could sully the wonderful experiences I am having. Work has been interesting, and as I've been in placement now since April, I am making some good connections with the staff. From here on out is the time that I can start ... read more

Hello all This weekend I found myself at a loose end, so I headed down to Battambang (pronounced 'Battambong') where some other volunteers are based. Battambang is Cambodia's 2nd City, and I had yet to visit so it seemed the perfect time! Battambang city, aka The Bong, is pretty big and is the provincial capital of Battambang Province. I headed down to see Esther and Katie, who had by coincidence planned a day of activities which I was invited...Est & Kat would say invited to, I say invited myself along to!! I left mine at about 06:45, and moto'd through Sisophon and onto National Highway 5 that runs all the way down to Battambang - only in Cambodia can you get in a traffic jam at 7am in the middle of nowhere! I arrived into Battambang ... read more

Howdy So, I'm now into Week 3 of my actual job – man, those 2 months of In-Country Training flew by! I am very sorry such a delay since my last post, but in-between moving to my house, having no electricity, finding my way around work and being laid-up in Phnom Penh with suspected acute appendicitis for a week over Ka'mai New Year, I've been really busy! So, I left Phnom Penh with Louise on Saturday 2nd April, our minivan loaded to the gills with motorbikes, bicycles, pillows, bedsheets, clothes, laptops, hammocks, a wardrobe (Louise's), a punchbag (mine) and a whole host of other crap to make our new houses homely! Funny thing happened as we approached Lou's house, which is about an hour down a 'red road' – basically a non-paved, dusty track. It has ... read more

Hello everyone To start, an apology – I've been incredibly slack on the blogging this past week, forgive me please! So to make up what follows is a bumper update....hold onto your hats.... So, last time we spoke I was finishing my Placement Visit Week, having sorted a house/bank account/meet and greet and was about to head out to Siem Reap. So, some breaking news that's over a week old, I made it safely and soundly to Siem Reap! After a 1hr bus journey - very short by Cambodian standards - I met up with Louise in Siem Reap at our guesthouse, where we both had every intention of having an awesome night! The day before was her birthday, and the day I arrived was St Patrick's day....Louise being from Cork and my Ma being being ... read more

Hello! Well the week so far has been brilliant! I boarded my bus from Kompang Cham on Sunday morning, all set for the 8hr bus journey - however, I was not set for 8hrs of Ka'mai karaoke videos on the flat screen above my head! Either as a joke or as a courtesy, I'm still not sure, the bus ticket lady gave me the seat directly behind the driver...thus allowing an adrenaline fuelled trip along the Cambodian roads coupled with a prime viewing spot for the music videos! Thank God/Allah/Budda/Ganesh for my for ancient iPod and for my Kindle (no, thank you Manisha!). I arrived into Sisophon thoroughly knackered, but thanks to the help of another fellow volunteer Oly, I had a helpful Tuk Tuk driver on standby to take me to my hotel (thanks ... read more

Hello everyone So today is my last day in Kompang Cham for a week, as on Sunday morning I'm off to Sisophon, Banteay Meanchey province for my 5 day Placement Visit Week. The week will consist of house hunting, opening a Ka'mai bank account, and getting to know the area where I will be living and working for the next two years - I start proper the 1st week of April. What I'm most looking forward to though is that I will also be meeting my Nursing Advisor counterpart, Jon, and my new Volunteer Assistant, Sam Ang. Jon and I will be working closely together across the hospital and health centre, with Sam Ang supporting us as a translator, interpreter and all-round saviour! I'll also be meeting the managers, clinical leads and staff at the hospital ... read more

Hello family, friends, lovers and enemies! How are we all? I hope that you are happy and healthy. Well, Saturday night bought a new experience to my life...a Ka'mai nightclub! Seriously, two of the most surreal, funny, bizarre and disturbing hours of my life! But, that's a story for another time! Yesterday we spent the afternoon on a boat trip, venturing North up the Mekong...think less Apocalypse Now, and more country dandy up the Mississippi! We set off at about 14:30, with the plan to be heading home for the sunset....lovely! We boarded our raft down the most rickety gangplank you can ever imagine - suffice to say, the swaying boat, lapping waves and nervousness did make for some amusing embarkations! I was able to sit at the very front of the boat (Kate-Winslet-Titanic-esque!), making the ... read more
