Day 24 Final Presentation and Creche Graduation

My final full day at Aravind Where has 4 weeks gone Yesterday I presented my final recommendations to Dr. Aravind which went really well. Dr. Aravind seemed genuinely appreciative of my work and our intended 30 minute meeting turned into nearly 2 hours as he engaged me in various discussions around some of my recommendations. Dr. Aravind is certainly one of the more open minded and receptive s

Day 23 The Home of Ganesh Babu

This morning I received an unexpected invitation from Ganesh for Sachi and myself to join his family for dinner that evening. Obviously an invitation I couldnt turn down and even Sachi who was still bemoaning the quantity of food she had consumed over the weekend whilst having her cookery lessons couldnt refuse. Ganesh turned up at the guest house at 7 with his eldest son Shruti 10 in

My last weekend in Madurai and what a quiet one its been. I am pretty much the only resident at the guest house at the moment. Scot has now set off to meet up with his wife Heather for a weeks holiday in Thailand. Sachi is spending the weekend with the wife of one of the Doctors whilst he is away at an eye camp the deal is that Sachi provides the company and in return receives 2 days of

Today turned out to be a hard slog the realisation has dawned that Im now into my final week and Ive got loads to get through. I ended up spending the best part of 10 hours ploughing through numerous performance metrics and data sources to try and produce a definitive specification to present to key stakeholders next week for sign off. Today has helped reenforce my early career choice of

Day 18 Off to the Theatre

The down side of Scots invitation to observe in Theatre was the fact that the surgeons working day starts at 7am So after an early breakfast and calming down a very concerned Mary who thought I must be ill to be up so early it was off to the hospital. I assumed there would be some degree of process or rigmarole involved in gaining entry at least somebody who would need to be notified bu

Ward RoundsI knew that this trip would present me with a number of opportunities to enjoy new experiences but what I hadnt anticipated was being presented with the chance to spend time on the clinical side of the organisation.Yesterday evening after work I accompanied Scot Warden the Ophthalmic Surgeon from Boston on his postoperative ward visits as he checked on his cataract patients from

Day 15 Meera

We had discussed whether to opt for the 30 minute elephant ride or to push the boat out and go for the 2 hour package. I had coerced Sachi into the 2 hour deal despite her concerns about not being able to walk for a weekOne of the best decisions I made I think And importantly Sachi more than agreed. We were introduced to our new friend for the next 2 hours a female 30 year old Indian elephant

Our guide Malik spent about 90 minutes walking us round a beautiful and very tranquil plantation. I never realised that I could be so interested in different varieties of pepper how many different spices came from the same trees and why different spices are so expensive. I also hadnt realised how ignorant I was on the subject of the few plants I thought I recognised I managed to identify Co

I set the alarm for 6am as our driver was picking me up at 630 to enable time to pick up Sachi and get to Periyar by 7. Only problem with this was that the monkeys like to wake at around 530 with dawn. What a noise but what an amazing way to start a day. I moved out on to my balcony and simply sat there whilst my ears were assaulted by first the monkeys and then various insect choruses. Dawn cho

ThekkadyAnother hour and a half saw us arrive at Thekkady. The journey was uneventful with one exception. Our driver had to stop at the Tamil Nadu Kerala border to complete some paper work and his promise of 5 minutes turned into nearly 20. During this 20 minutes Sachi and I found ourselves under intense scrutiny from the locals they seemed intrigued by us to the point of pressing their faces

The Vision Centre at PeriyakulamAfter an hour or so we thanked our hosts and travelled a couple of miles to the town of Periyakulam to visit one of the Aravind Vision Centres. These small permanent units are an alternate mechanism of community outreach and are designed to provide lowcost primary care but unlike the camps they are able to provide ongoing monitoring due to their fixed location.
In order to escape from the noise and madness of Madurai we decided to head up into the hills overlooking the city and visit a hotel called the Taj Garden. A pleasant little retreat only a few minutes from the city but a million miles away in terms of atmosphere As you climb up the hillside in the autorickshaw you can visibly see the air getting cleaner and feel the temperature dropping.
Im starting to settle into the daily routine here now. Breakfast lunch and dinner are served daily in the guest house which provides a brief escape from the heat of the hospital. My office in the Laico building is ok its not air conditioned unlike many others but it does have a pretty efficient fan which keeps it bearable. We had 3 power cuts today which is a reasonably normal state of
